What to do if I slip up?

If I slip up on my diet (like today, I just had some brownies), is it better to continue to eating my meals like normal or should I not eat for the rest of the day to make up the calories?

I would drink plenty of water and eat a light dinner.3

Typically, for a large portion of the MFP population, 1 pound of weight loss equals an overall 3500 calorie deficit for the week.
Even if you over eat 1 day by 1000 calories, but hit your target for the rest of the week, you're going to still have a 2500 calorie deficit. Which still equals weight loss over the long run.
Don't sweat it.

Don't skip your meals, just make them healthier or eat a little less.4

I try and tweak my planned meals for the rest of the day to make them a little lower in cals but not skip altogether. I also try and do a bit extra exercise to burn some more but again not so much that I injure/exhaust myself. I finfd I can make up 200-300 cals fairly easily with these 2 things so depends how far over you've gone.
If this doesn't work just don't give in to the "Today is already bad I might as well eat as much as I like" voice in your head and get back on plan tomorrow. This last bit is the MOST important, one slip up will not ruin all your hard work.2 -
I prefer to press on without punishing myself. If I can tweak a meal slightly without making it feel like I was "bad" I'll do that. For example, if I had pre-logged a hamburger for dinner with all the trimmings, and then blew my daily calories by having brownies, I might just lose the bun and turn it into a hamburger salad with a lot more lettuce and tomatoes.
I think it's important to recognize the fact that as humans we historically have not eaten exactly the same number of calories every single day. It's important to keep things positive. So, forgive yourself. You're human. Think about what you had planned for dinner tonight, and tweak it just A little bit. Perhaps not enough to get down to the calories you had counted on for the day, but not enough to make it feel like mother superior is whacking you on the knuckles with a ruler. Blessings.6 -
Log it and move on. There's nothing wrong with eating brownies. Try and fit them in your calories, but as mentioned above if you go over one day not a whole lot is going to happen. Eat a healthy dinner and maybe get some exercise if you want.6

A co-worker brought me an unexpected cannoli today. I don't consider it a slip-up. I consider it a bonus (although I will skip tonight's planned ice cream).3

Go immediately back to your plan. Otherwise you create a cycle of hunger and bingeing.4

You still need to eat because you need the nutrition and energy.0

NO do not skip eating for the rest of the day. move-on with your meals as normal. here is what i once read:
don't let one meal ruin your entire day
don't let one day ruin your entire week
don't let one week ruin your entire month
don't let one month ruin your entire year
each time you "slip" just resume your regular program for the rest of the day - tomorrow is a new day! :flowerforyou:6 -
Log it and go on normally, as a generality. Especially true if its a rare thing.
If eating some special item makes you less hungry later, it's fine to eat a little lighter later in the day, as long you don't sacrifice important nutrition goals to do it.
Basically, don't sweat about it. Just don't make it a routine habit. You'll be fine.0 -
I might tweak a meal later in the day. Reduce portions or switch to leaner meat. I might add a bit of walking if I can. But when the next day comes, I go right back to plan.0
