The first thing to do is click on "add food" under the meal you wish to add something to THEN search for the food.

Are you using the web version? If so, there are two different ways to search the Food Database.

The first way is to browse it and edit an entry; that is probably where you are looking. That is found at FOOD > Database.

The second way is to start by navigating to your FOOD > Food Diary, then choosing a meal slot (such as Breakfast), then clicking Add Food. That will bring up a web page with a text box that you can use to search the Database. From there, you can then add an item to the meal slot in your Food Diary.

Whatever you do, don't give up. Keep asking if you can't figure it out.

Ask in Tech Support section instead of Food and Nutrition. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/categories/technical-support
Promise you won't give up. I'm keeping tracking calcium and protein and have never found anything so useful. Also consider asking friends or family. You would be surprised how many people use this. There are offices where the entire staff is using this program.

For future reference, there are instructions on how to do most things on MFP on the Help/FAQ pages. There are slight differences on how to do things on the three different versions: web, Android mobile app, or iOS mobile app.
