Sardines and... (looking for ideas)
I bought whole sardines the other day and they are in my freezer now. Looking for an idea on what to do with them. I'm not into creamy sauces or cheese. I don't have a barbecue or deepfrier and prefer to use fresh, tasty, few ingredients and short cooking time, summerly European or Asian is fine. The only thing I can come up with is to steam them in paper, or maybe spaghetti with oil, garlic, tomatoes and the sardines. But the latter sounds a bit difficult with whole sardines. And .. well.. just steaming a sardine, I'm lacking ideas for how to spice them and what to eat with it.

What about sautéing them in a garlicky wine sauce, like they serve with mussels? With lightly wilted spinach and crusty bread.1

Hmm.. sounds yummy, but I wonder how filling it will be with just bread and sardine. I think wine is the only thing I don't have at home though and cannot get within my budget at a good for cooking quality.0 -
Google up NYT Mark Bittman's pasta with sardines. Comes together quickly, and ever so good.1

Should be okay. I've never had frozen sardines that needed to be cooked. I use the little ones from the can and just squeeze some lime juice on them with pepper sauce sometimes. Makes a lovely sandwich.
It's actually one of the things my doctor had listed as a "good" food on my pre-diabetic food recommendation list.0 -

Looks yummy. Only need to figure out how to turn whole sardines into something resembling those in a tin0 -

Wine used for cooking is typically very inexpensive, go to a place that has a broad range and you should find a cheap option. For fish you probably will want to go for a "dry" white wine.

Unfortunately not here Spent about $8 on a red wine for spaghetti bolognese, and that stuff just spoiled it0 -
My father usually makes sardines with cooked spinach, tomatoes, eggs, onions, seasoned salt, garlic, and peppers. It's great for a morning breakfast. I always have naan or bread with it and create a wrap of some sort with avocado to balance out any spiciness from the peppers.
Hope this helps and best of luck!2 -
I just eat 'em out of the tins, sure the sodium is kind of high but it's not too bad, I have to eat the ones in sriracha sauce and mustard sauce, I can't eat them otherwise.0

Those are not out of tin sardines, but whole ones that need to be gutted first. No oil, or added sodium. Fresh sardines (well, in the freezer now).0 -
Diced tomatoes and onions over rice
Or,
In top ramen0 -
Ok, if wine is out, maybe a sauce of lemon juice, butter, garlic? And if you need more bulk, it would taste good with or over pasta or rice. Or just more veg on the side?0
