I thought my scale was broken last week....or at least just sucks.
I woke up, weighed in.....194.5. Used the potty and brushed my teeth. 193.5. Moved the scale and tried again. 193.5. Moved it and tried again, got 193.5. Last week when I moved it around it would vary in weight by about 4 lbs.
So now it is an hour and a half later, I step on the scale. 196. Is it really possible that my breakfast, a glass of water, a glass of almond milk and a cup of coffee is 2.5 lbs? Ah, I guess so.....
I ordered the Taylor bodyfat scale. Hopefully it will come soon...
Does anyone else see crazy fluctuations during the day?

Yep I only ever weigh once a week, same day, after peeing and first thing in the morning.

Ah, the scale conundrum! Yes, the scale can fluctuate for me up to 4lbs in a span of a few hours, regardless of whether I ate or not. Sometimes its different within minutes. And every scale is different. So the best thing to do is pick one time a week to weigh-in, do so stark naked, after you've completed your morning toilet business, and make sure you stand on the scale in the same spot every time (mark the scale with a sharpie marker or some tape to make sure you put your big toes in the same spot every time). Also, sometimes I will weigh 3 times all at once. Jump on, jump off, 3 times. Take the average weight of the 3 attempts. For instance this morning was my weigh-in morning. Stepped on the scale 197, stepped on it again 199, stepped on it again 197.5. I called it 198 and will weigh again next week.

Quit weighing yourself every moment of the day. Stick to once, the same time as the other gal mentioned. It is better to do it once a week but I have to admit I do it daily...habit over the years.... This time I've learned not to beat myself up when the scale says something I was not expecting.

yes, the scale can be scary. pay no attention to any numbers duringthe day.. they are misleading.
Focus on once a week in the morning, w/in 15 minutes of getting up and doing business, naked.. thats your true weight,.
I like to weigh in friday mornings. This gives me the push needed not to over do it on the weekends.

I was pissed off at my scale and went and bought a new one too. Was all excited when I got it home and the darn thing told me I was 3 lbs heavier! LOL

I experience fluctuations all day long. A gallon of water weighs just over 8 lbs, so just two cups of water is 1 lb.

I usually only weigh on Wed...but had a tiny loss yesterday of a half pound, and thought I may be retaining water for muscle repair...which seems like I was right since this AM it is 1.5 down from last week. I am not usually a compulsive scale watcher just for this reason...my weight fluctuates and then I get disappointed. So, weighing in on Wed at 6 am after potty has been pretty good for me...except for the week I gained a pound. The following week, though, I was down 3.5, so I have just chilled the eff out about it and realize that this is for the long haul and it will average out to a loss at the end of the month; and I know the closer I get to my goals, the slower it gets.
I guess it is kind of shocking to me how much food and water actually weighs!
Still a really good job at getting back to a relatively normal shape for me -- 12 lbs in about 6 weeks. I have been good on my eating and wine consumption, exercising....and feel great! I am excited at the thought of being able to fit into last year's clothes and not having to by newer 'taf kcuf' clothes!

I do it daily same time too to keep it in check but only record the weigh in on the same day each week
  • Absolutely - as soon as eat weight goes on, pee it might go down, exercise, dehydrated, drinking loads of water or alcohol and even Sexy times will flucturate the scales during the day.

If you need to weigh yourself everyday, may I suggest when you first get up (after going to the 'potty') and when you go to bed. I do this and have learned that I know how much I will weigh in morning as always lose the same amount overnight depending whether I have been to gym or not (i lose more overnight if went to gym)

I agree with the responses of once a week, same time every morning in the same spot, after potty and stark naked. That's exactly what I do. In addition, I'll measure 2 - 3 areas every week (waist, hips, and thighs). Sometimes, the weight won't change right away, but I'll lose like a 1/4" inch in these areas. When that happens, for me, 1 - 2 pounds will usually drop off within the next 3 days (provided that I don't totally screw up my diet before then).

Another stupid scale thing... I weigh more at the doctor's than at home (just by a couple of lbs). I usually weigh myself as soon as I get home from the her office to see if my scale is the same... it never is.

I'm not worried about which one is correct. I use the one at home year round, so I'm sticking with the weight on that one!

Don't worry about a couple of pounds over a short period of time. What matters is losing over a period of time, and then maintaining.

Wow, that was great! I've been battling the scale mentally even though I'm seeing good changes in my body... time to stop. I'm right about Deb's weight and would be totally excited with her after picture. Time to put up the scale!

Wow Pam, that story in the link you posted was great!!! I ditched my scale almost two weeks ago and am not going to rely on it anymore. It has worked to my success and detriment, and the last time I did an exercise/eating plan I told myself I wasn't going to get on it for 30 days (normally I'm on it ever morning). The 30 day milestone came and my pants were a little looser but the number on the scale showed a zero pound loss. As much as I tried not to let it mess with my head, it did and I gave up. This time around, I didn't even bother to weigh in before. It doesn't matter. As long as I'm eating right and exercising, I'm getting healthy and it doesn't matter what the scale says.

Keep working at it and ignore what the scale says, or better yet, get rid of it!

I weigh once a week, period. Always on the same day before I eat, but after the bathroom. Though my husband has noticed that if he weighs himself a few times in a row it doesn't change, so I guess that's good!
