Before or after?

Do you weight your food before or after you cook it? The weight differs so what's the right one?

I struggle with this too... For the most part I weigh foods before cooking though a few I weigh after... Same with frozen... Before or after thawed? Lol I usually do before but I don't know if that's always correct0

Before. However, if you weigh it after, make sure to choose the correct "cooked" entry.3

I barf my food out.
Remove the saliva and bile
Weigh it
Eat it again3 -
Half and half. I weigh most meat after cooking because I'm not going to measure out only my portion and cook it separately from my husband and daughter's. However, when I am mixing it up in something (e.g., meatballs) I weigh it raw.

For many things--such as meats--there are entries for both raw and cooked portions. If I'm making a dish for the first time, I'll weigh the ingredients raw and use the raw weight entries in MFP. But if I then eat something as a leftover, I'll used the cooked weight entry.

See this is why it's confusing... You weigh raw because water adds weight but not after cooking because cooking it removes water... *doh*
For example: my frozen Indian food I love... The container states one serving 283g. Frozen it weighs around 300 to 310g thawed it weighs about the same and cooked it weighs around 280 to 284g.
Then another frozen meal I enjoy one serving per label 165g. Frozen the meal weighs between 163 to 165g cooked it weighs between 180 and 183g (never weighed it unthawed)
And what about foods that are listed as "keep frozen until cooked"?0 -
Before wherever possible. But either way use the correct entry - raw for raw or a cooked entry for cooked items.0
