Rollerblading

Hi,

At 231lbs I need to alternate my running days with some low impact activity. It is getting too hot to cross train at the gym, so I am thinking of dusting off my rollerblades.

I looked in the "calories burned from exercise" function on the database, and I have to say I am at a loss... I found 3 different types of rollerblading, and each gives me different calorie burned. Check out:

All inputs are 231 pounds and 30 minutes, these are the results:

Rollerblading: Calories burned 157
Skating, roller (rollerblading, roller blading): Calories burned 367
Roller blading (in-line skating): Calories burned 629

As you can see, apparently roller blading consumes nearly 4 times more calories than rollerblading... something can't be right.

Anybody has any intelligence regarding what is appropriate?

Thanks,

it depends on how much you weigh, your effort, and your pace.

    According to this:
    https://captaincalculator.com/health/calorie/calories-burned-rollerblading-calculator/
Type of Activity MET Calories Burned
    • Skating, roller 7 386
    • In-line skating, 14.4 km/h (9.0 mph), recreational pace 7.5 413
    • In-line skating, 17.7 km/h (11.0 mph), moderate pace, exercise training 9.8 540
    • In-line skating, 21.0 to 21.7 km/h (13.0 to 13.6 mph), fast pace, exercise training 12.3 678
    • In-line skating, 24.0 km/h (15.0 mph), maximal effort 14 772

The total number of calories burned for any task is calculated by first finding the calorie burn per minute - this is done by multiplying the MET value of the task by the person's body weight in kg and 3.5, then dividing that number by 200.

So based on your speed you're likely burning around 770 calories per hour or 386 calories for every 30 minutes.

It all depends on the intensity. I RollerSkate. Your speed, inside or outside make a difference. I had a body bugg when skating was my only form of exercise. I wish I remembered what it said. I'm thinking for intense skating session at the rink it was close to 350-400.

It all depends how fast and if it is up hill.

So I'm 132, 5'6", and rollerbladed at an indoor rink for 1hr 40 minutes. One calorie burn from the exercise log said 1100 cals and the other said about 650 calories. I went with 650 cuz 1100 just seemed like too much! But it may have actually been somewhere inbetwen.

I think any type of skating activity burns lots because you're using its of your body. I ice skate and I know my core is always engaged and every muscle really if I'm really skating

So rollerblading probably does burn lots. I'd go with the lower calorie burn though since mfp calorie burns aren't science and are often over exaggerated

I play roller derby and in a good active hour I have figured that a burn between 200-350 is reasonable depending on how hard I went. Skating in a straight line is very low impact but can be good cardio depending on the effort. As you first start you'll get tired quads and butt and maybe shinsplints, but don't confuse the soreness with a big calorie burn, without a HRM you'll not be able to figure it out very easily.
