First Competition

So as the title suggests, I am going to be competing in my first competition soon. After talking with several people I've decided to go figure. However, I am in college and cannot afford the trainer I was originally going to go with. Does anyone have any advice on meal, workout or supplement plans?

Do you have any pictures of yourself now? When is your show?
Have the people you've been talking to done a competition themselves? Having people around you or people you can talk to that understand what you're going through at different points in prep can help a lot.3 -
If you cannot afford a trainer there's a good chance you can't afford the rest of the competition. An average amateur show costs look a bit like this:
Federation fee: $50
Show entry fee: $100-$200
Posing suit: $150-$400
Shoes: $20-70
Tan: $100-$200
Hair/nails/makeup: Can possibly do for cheap or free, but could impact your placing
Also, it's a good idea to go to a posing clinic or hire a posing coach because posing is a huge part of your score. You might be lucky to find a free posing clinic, but a one on one session with a coach is a really good idea. Not saying you shouldn't compete, just pointing out that competing is very expensive.16 -

This. (and some of those amounts look cheap to me!) Plus food, and supplements. Your study is likely to suffer also, and imo, a comp isn't worth lowering grades over. If you've got no idea on training or eating to achieve your own goals, I'd postpone competing until you're financially able.11 -
I mean, if we're going to go down that route surely every elite athlete who trains hard is doing something unnatural and unhealthy. Shall we cancel the next Olympics? Christmas run of The Nutcracker ballet?10

I'm going to Australia this October, competing for the first time. My first goal was lose weight. Then I wanted to build muscles. I lost weight without a nutritionist or a trainer. But later I realized that training for a completion is completely different story. I had to get a nutritionist. It's a bit pricey but you can do fundraising from friends and family. Instagram is a good way to put yourself out there.0

Please don't. Do you expect your friends and family to pay for other hobbies you choose to do?14 -

Why not? Why not people help each other out? People help each other and support each other all the time. What's wrong with it? Competing and accomplishing something is inspiring to all. People can pitch in $10, $20 , what's the big deal?4 -

It's sleazy. You are going into this knowing it could cost upwards of $1000 and you don't see a problem with asking people to pay to make your whim come true. It's like the girl who set up a go fund me asking others to buy her a house because she doesn't feel like she should have to. Your frivolous dream is not a necessity others should fund.24 -
Why couldn't she go, spend less, and have the learning experience for next time?
Anyone?2 -

Competitions are expensive, there's no way around that. Even if she spent no money on training, posing, dietary guidance, or supplements she has to pay all the costs I listed above. If she got lucky and was given a posing suit, shoes, and attempted her own tan it's still several hundred dollars just to enter the competition. She could spend less to go watch and in most cases people should watch before doing it.6 -

There's a little difference between buying a house and going to a competition, I think lol. I don't see any problems with asking a little help from people achieving something inspirational. If you could afford to go on a competition, power to you! Some people need help, especially students. It's a shame if this young woman can't achieve her dreams because of financial barriers.
I've seen many Olympic athletes, World champions started their journey with fundraising events. I remember ESPN fully supported one girl who was in poverty to become a world champion body builder.

To OP, do you have an Instagram account? I'd highly recommend using Instagram. Once you show what you can achieve, a lot of companies will offer you advertisement deals.7

When I went to college, I wanted to get into a competitive hobby. I lived a bare necessity minimum lifestyle and still couldn't afford it. My family told me before that point that they wouldn't lend me money for any reason. Even an emergency. So I had to let it go in the name of survival.
You're very lucky to have people in your life that will help you with something that isn't a life necessity. Not everyone has that kind of support, and so relying on others may not be realistic for other people.4 -
Spend a grand to win a $5 trophy.
Think about it.

This is incorrect!!! And rather presumptuous of you to say that elite athletes do this r those who compete and train hard do some type of illegal thing!1 -

She was replying to a comment that was later removed, so it looks out of context. You also read the comment wrong if you think she was saying all athletes do something illegal and competitions should be banned.3 -
Hey everyone,
I'm new to the site... I competed in June of 2017 in the ANBF Natural federation and turned professional in the classic physique master's division. I'm getting my prep started early for next June's show also July and November, I'm 24 weeks out and extremely motivated.
Train hard, Train smart and Train often!!!!

I’ve competed twice in figure. I don’t want to discourage you, but the amount of time required to properly train, and the amount of money are both huge commitments. If you can’t manage to do this properly because of time/money restrictions, you may really struggle with the process. You may have to wait until you finish college.2

Get the hell out of here.
No- don't ask people to pay for your HOBBIES! That's absurd. If you have a birthday coming up- or a holiday- sure-give them a list of things- and say whatever you could contribute to x and y would be great.
I asked for a dance intensive for Christmas- it was expensive AF- and told my parents and my husband if they wanted to chip in and even pay for half I'd be so grateful. My husband bought the whole thing for me- and then ordered the flier and made a poster board of it to give me something to unwrap.
But I would NEVER EVER dream of asking someone to pay for my hobby for me. That is- patently absurd. No. Stop giving entitled young people a bad name.
work hard- own your own ish.
College people pay for their own *kitten*- your an adult- figure it out and stop asking for effing handouts.13 -

im with you, you need to use any and all means necessary to peruse your goals, if people think you deserve it and wanna contribute then that's up to them and if not well then they wont contribute.... this lifestyle is competitive and expensive its up to you to perform and if you can, people will help.... its no different than asking for a scholarship if you don't perform no more money....1 -

But if it works, I'll have my young beautiful daughter do a gofundme because daddy needs a new truck.3 -

Why stop there? night club is probably going to be faster. If you're going to go there- might as well get as much bang for your buck. Why stop there.0
