What was the best tip that you heard that changed your health/weight-loss journey for the better?

Watch your serving sizes. My mom told me this, and my roommate once told me this, and then I started noticing how much I ate vs other people, and over time I learned to be more conscious of portion sizes.22

It was recently actually:
Being fat is hard. Losing weight is hard. Choose one.
That put things in perspective for me and actually got me out of the house and into the gym. When you say "I don't want to work out today" or "I can eat a little more" you're choosing to stay fat. The difference between these choices is that one gets easier the more you continue to choose it, the other gets harder.
Other than this little piece of inspiration, I think the best tip I ever got was to "set small goals and don't worry about any other goals or other peoples goals until you reach yours. Then move on to the next small goal. Continue this until you're where you want to be".69 -

get a scale, log cals, do hiit, do IF, think of your calories on a weekly basis. Go overboard by 1000 cals. Cut 1000+ out of the rest of the week.

more like a discovery i made on my own: "if you take it to work, you will eat it." no matter how unappealing last night's leftovers look at 5:30 am
saved me from a whole ton of 'oh crap i'm starving, better just hit the food court and have done with it' meals.30 -
do not forget to live.
I was stuck in a negative circle because i thought i could not go out because of diet. But yes, you can. Plan, make fun and dance those kilo's away25 -

Focussing on macros rather than calories.
Same end result, but doesn't trigger obsessive behavior for me.12 -
Record each meal before you eat it, it will subconsciously cause you to eat less...
Create a personal mantra, mine is "It's better to feel thin than full"
Make an entry ever day in MFP profile, "7/25 Day 101 down 26 lbs, met yesterday's calorie goal, keep up the good work" Never put negative comments, if you had a bad day yesterday simply right "I will do better today and "Insert Personal Mantra"18 -

that 1lb of weight is 3500 calories. Made it so much easier to see that going over calories by even 1000 wasn't that much and could be fixed through the week. Took so much guilt away and allowed me to get back on track that much easier!

to "keep momentum going" with both exercise and diet, always been one for losing a few lbs and thinking i'm now ok to have (for example) that KFC or Pizza again cause i've lost weight then get back to square one. Been strict for just under 6 months and lost 2 stone with no intention of putting it back on7

Find an activity you like instead of an exercise you don't as long as you are moving it doesn't matter what it is.
For me it was dance exercise that progressed to seven days a week in the gym doing what I thought I hated which I now enjoy. I found social interaction in the gym not a workout. The workout was just an added benefit.13 -

Nothing is off limits. Just make sure it fits in daily calories. That really helped me! I can still have what I want, just in smaller amounts.9

I've a few that have really helped me.
1)You can have a weekly deficit and cycle your calories if your lifestyle doesn't fit with a daily deficit. So I maintain on average Friday, Saturday, Sunday and have a 500 deficit on average Monday to Thursday for half a pound loss. Not for everyone but works for me.
2)Unless you have a specific dietary need (athletes or medical conditions) fat and carbs aren't evil, but getting adequate protein is beneficial for maintaining muscle.
3) Water weight fluctuations can both mask and exaggerate weight loss, you can still weigh every day but look for long term trends month by month.
4) Start doing strength training whilst you're losing don't wait till you've lost (I've hit the same body measurements 10 pounds heavier than the last time I lost for my wedding doing cardio alone)

That if you gain 1 to 2+ pounds overnight or a coupe of days but you KNOW you don't eat 3500+ over maintainence then it's got to be water retention10
