Leftover unhealthy food

How do you deal with having something like leftover pizza? I had a huge box of margherita pizza leftover and of course I finished the last 2 slices today that ended up being a bajillion calories. For some reason I feel horrible for throwing away bad food, and if it's in the house I of course eat it! Any advice? Thanks in advance

you can always freeze food. maybe one day next week or next month, reheat the pizza (or other food)
when you have calorie room in your day.10 -
I just work it into my calories. Whenever I order pizza I get a small, eat half of it one night and the other half for lunch the next afternoon. It's not "healthy" or "unhealthy" by itself.17

When my husband and I have pizza, we put the leftovers in the refrigerator and heat it up in the microwave. Its not to bad reheated.1
-
Probably not the best strategy, but I eat all I can (like maybe the whole pizza) and toss the rest.

If it's pizza and I'm sharing it with friends, I ask them to take the leftovers with them. I'm usually a frugal person and hate food waste, but here's how I think of it: If I bought a $14 pizza, that's about $1.75 per slice, assuming 8 slices per pizza. If I've eaten all I want, and there are two pieces left, I ask myself: Would I pay $3.50 to stay within my calories today? If I would, I throw both pieces away. Or I throw one piece away and save the other one for the next day, when I can plan to have it within that day's calorie budget. Just because I have it doesn't mean it needs to go in my mouth. I'm not a garbage disposal.22

I plan on the leftovers and fit them into my calories. Rarely do I have an issue doing this. So.... not seeing a problem?5

I don't throw away food. It's funny that you mention leftover pizza because that's exactly what I'll be having tomorrow. You are being dramatic, it's not a bajillion calories, it's not bad food and it's not a big deal. If you fit the slices of pizza into your log today, you'll have no problem fitting them into your log tomorrow.14 -
Thanks for the reminder! Just had the last slice of veggie pizza.2

I throw mine away.... I typically hate wasting food, but certain things like brownies, cake, pizza, etc, I don't consider food for purposes of sustaining life. I see them as disposable because keeping them around too long means I end up eating them and wrecking my diet.
There have been times I really wanted a "specialty" pizza so I'd order a whole pizza, eat my fill, then throw the rest of it away. Horribly wasteful, but I i regret it even more if I don't.
When it comes to sweets, not sure how your work is, but any sort of sweets in my office will instantly disappear when shared.9 -
You can also make it more filling and healthy. For example, I love adding grilled chicken on my margherita pizza. The protein will help satiety and you're less likely to eat more slices.5

Eh, two slices of the small pizza we get is 320 calories and not at all satiating, so I see where the OP is coming from, especially since she said the box was huge.
My OH's family was here last week and we had pizza. I tried to send all the leftovers back with them, but my OH objected...and then abandoned the pizza in the frig for days until I reminded him about it.
Food that triggers the OP may not be problematic for you, but that doesn't mean it's not a problem for her.
@janjunie I don't like throwing food out either. My strategy is to find someone else to eat it.
(psst - I suggest you not call food "bad" here on MFP but instead refer to it as something that triggers you to overeat or is otherwise problematic for you.)13 -
I either give it to someone else (like my husband if I went out with friends...or to my mom who is a single senior), throw it away, or more often I eat it as leftovers and plan so it's not too crazy calorie wise. Like 1 big slice of pizza and a salad instead of 3 slices. Or throw away the crust and for lunch the next day I'll eat the cheese & toppings only, with an omelet and veggies.
But in restaurants, I usually eat all I can and then if there are leftovers I don't take them home. It's kind of a hassle (to me and sometimes the staff) and I usually have enough meals planned out at home that I don't want to throw a random 1/3 calzone into that already-planned-out day or week...0 -
I usually get a junior size or personal size pizza so no leftovers for me. If there's other leftover pizza we save a piece because our daughter eats it the next day and then cut a piece or two up for our dogs and throw out the rest.2
-
I often eat leftovers for breakfast or lunch.
I pre-log my food and if one meal is higher calorie than the other meals will be lower calorie that day.
I don't think of foods as unhealthy unless I am allergic to them or they are spoiled.
1-2 slices of pizza usually fits my goals okay and certainly has nutrients. I might have a salad with it.
Don't buy so much food at once.
Offer it to other people.
Freeze it for another time.
Don't be overly dramatic and enjoy regular food in moderation.2 -
Two pieces of margherita pizza is not a bajillion calories and is not going to ruin your progress. Get out and walk around the block 3 times to a) work off one of them and b) feel better.9

This, so much. I hate wasting food, but I had to get over that or I never would have lost weight. When I was overweight, I would often overeat just so food wouldn't go to "waste," but that's such a silly attitude - eating food I didn't want or need to eat was just as much of a waste as throwing it in the trash, with the added benefit of taking in more calories than I needed.
So to the people saying it's no big deal, "just make it fit your calories" - well sure, if it's food you want to eat, do that. But I think eating food just to get rid of it (for me at least) is the same behavior that lead to me gaining weight in the first place. To each their own, but I don't think the OP is being dramatic to pose the question.

I would eat leftovers for lunch or even dinner for next day or two, depending how much there is. If it's a large slice of pizza, i would only have one with big salad. I don't like throwing out food, so i would be one of the t&ose people that will fit it in my day. Definitely not a problem for me. In fact, banning something out of my diet is a much bigger problem.1

I made a box cake the other day and froze half of it in slices. No idea how it will fare but I couldn't just eat it all.0

Thanks all for the input! Also, the "bajillion calories" comment was in sarcasm. Also, I didn't know the calorie content of the pizza itself until after I started MPF, but turns out it was hefty in calories, fat/cholesterol, and added a lot to my day. Yes, it is a trigger food I guess you could say.
Thanks all!4 -

Exactly. Sorry I wasn't more specific! I didn't think about maybe freezing them, but regardless, any kind of "junk" food is a problem for me as I normally will just sit and eat it till it's gone. It's difficult to say no, so I was just seeing what coping strategies or storage solutions others may have used in similar situations.

Thanks so much for the insight!1 -
we take leftover pizza and put it in freezer bags and freeze it so if anyone wants pizza just nuke it or put it in the oven for a bit to reheat. no waste4

I've never had leftover pizza ..what is that lol8

I really like leftover pizza and find it not too bad in calorie terms, but pizza does vary a lot. I generally just refrigerate and eat over the next few days, but you can certainly freeze it. Just wrap it up in something airtight to stop it drying out.
If you want to eat it but not all at once because of the calories, try using it as salad croutons (cut in small pieces and heat up/crisp in the oven) or breadsticks for dipping in soup (cut in strips and do the same). You could cut it up before freezing so it stops being 'pizza' psychologically.
Or if you find it easier to just throw it out, please don't feel bad about that, it's far better than feeling obliged to eat it when you don't want to and making yourself unhappy.4 -

I love this!0 -
Whenever I order a pizza, I eat the whole thing.
But if I somehow have any left over, I'd freeze it.0 -
I give all my "leftover" food to my chickens, the worse it is, seems the more they like it. Let them turn junk food into nutritious eggs :-)5
