Welcome to the August 2017 Cycling Challenge thread!
This is a continuation of the July thread.
This is a continuation of the July thread.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bike. Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin, at home or the gym? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.
There's no set challenge across participants - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group. Just pick your own target that you want to achieve this month, post that when you join the thread, and post updates throughout the month as you're working towards your target.

I somehow surprised myself and rode 400km in July - an all time record for me! I want to see if I can do it again, so my goal for August will be 400km.4
-
I'm getting back in the saddle more finally, and actually hitting some longer rides when I go out on the weekend, so I'm setting my goal at 300mi again. I didn't get it last month, but this month I think I've got it.2
-
This month I am going to increase my mileage both on road and off. I will count them separate this time. So, 125 road miles and 40 trail miles for August2
-
This month I'm shooting for 300km road and 100km trail.1

Saturday -- Today we decided to ride a Permanent called the Bruny Island Lighthouse Dash. 120 km.
We knew it was a bit hilly, and we knew that there was about 50 km of gravel. So we took our touring bicycles which have the wider tyres and decent gears for climbing. We also dressed for the conditions while we were on the road, so that was good. Unfortunately Rowan has been down with a cold/flu this week so we weren't sure how he would go.
The first part of the ride to Alonnah was fine. We've done it before on a number of occasions so there was nothing unexpected. It's a bit hilly but there's a decent amount of flat stuff too. And most of the road is sealed/paved.
Then we embarked on the 50 km of gravel. They've redone the road relatively recently, but we've had a lot of winter rain lately and one of the features of the road were series of deep potholes. We could not take our eyes off the road for anything. We'd be riding along on a decently well-packed gravel road, then suddenly, a set of about 20 of these potholes in a row ... right where we were cycling. We'd have to move out to dodge them ... into the path of the surprisingly heavy traffic who were kicking up fine dust all over us.
That continued right up to the point where there's a sign that says the council does not maintain the road from that point on. From that point on, it's a national park. Sadly, they don't maintain roads particular well. The last few km to the turn-around were a little scary, as they were after we turned around too.
Also, the last 10 km to the turn-around ... got seriously hilly. And of course, the 10 km back from the turn-around were equally as hilly. There are lots of 12% to 20% grades in that collection, and some decent grades elsewhere on the route as well.
We made it to the halfway point ... the lighthouse ... with 5 minutes to spare. Rowan wasn't feeling well, and told me to go ahead and try to make the next control at Alonnah in time. I missed it by 10 minutes, and despite the fact that I tried my best up these hills, on dodgy gravel roads, I was only about 3 minutes ahead of Rowan!
We decided to salvage the ride at that point ... and stop for lunch and hot coffees. Feeling some better, we finished the ride. Not within the ride time, but we made the last ferry back! In fact, we had about half an hour to wait ... and let me tell you, that was one cold wait.

Slow start to the month. Got a 5 mile trail ride yesterday. Was hoping for more but it started pouring rain and headed back to the truck. 6.5 miles today on the road.

Day long- Noah+Ark- inspired rain forced ride indoors..First Zwift ride in months started uninspired, ended feeling hopeful about return to fitness.. Wa-hoooo.3

@Machka9 That's a really impressive ride! I don't even want to imagine a 50km long gravel road...
Stopping for lunch and hot drinks when you did sounds like a wise decision, great long day in the saddle
Just a short Sunday ride for me this week. The hot weather had me feeling exhausted and sweaty already when I woke up, so I just went to an ice cream place at a lake 16km away and almost the same way back. It seems that was still enough to melt my brain That's my explanation for why I forget to unclip my left foot when I got home. So I fell over right in front of my house, just as one of my neighbours was walking out of the door... I only hurt my left hand a bit. Not too bad, I actually thing my pride suffered more ^^
Wed, 02/08/2017 - 11.5km commute
Fri, 04/08/2017 - 25.9km commute & trip downtown
Sun, 06/08/2017 - 31.8km Sunday ride

69km for August1 -
No particular goal this month and no events to look forward to either.
Planned a social ride on Saturday with my work assistant and cycling protégé but the weather forecast intervened. He needs a little push to increase his mileage so promised to tow him home if he struggled.
Did the route solo today instead and it took in two Royal Palaces: Hampton Court and Windsor Castle. Lovely ride through Windsor Great Park.
Took me on roads I haven't ridden in ages and it was nice to set a whole load of PRs - quite satisfying to know I'm still improving despite my advanced years!

I ride nearly every day, the weather & tropical insects permitting, with no set goals other than to enjoy being outside. The distances I cover range from 30 to 100+ Km. I will probably not ride tomorrow as we expect to see the heat of the day reach 38⁰ C.3

The past week was *mostly* not great. No spare tube (used my only spare last weekend, the day I could make it to the bike shop they were closed, and couldn't get back until Saturday due to work), and I don't go out without a spare tube, just in case. So I only got the one ride in. On the plus side, it was a new record distance for me, at 66 miles. Next week will, hopefully, be better.1

Whow you did very well.I did 51km gravel yesterday. It was also a bit hard.Lots of sand in the road.I also got a new oval ring on my bike. That work much more effective, but it also makes you lot more tired.Did mine in 3hours flat. The ascent and desent was 577m.So for me lots hilly.
This coming weekend for a change we are going to do some road not gravel.2 -
Nice couple of days around here. High 70s no humidity and no wind! Did 9.1 yesterday on the road. A new personal best. Got 7.3 trail miles in tonight with the weekly group ride.

Three highlights this week....
1/ Getting a bit repetitive doing my local rides so slung the bike in the back of the car to ride some brand new roads. 60 miler centred on Liphook in Hamphire. Got lost repeatedly, GPS seemed very flaky, also managed to lose where I had parked the car, that's really handy when you are tired and out of water!
Didn't realise it was such a hilly area - 3,900' of climbing and constant changes of elevation. Found a beast of a hill, only 5% average gradient but the damn thing went on for 2 miles without a break (highlghted below). Far more of a challenge to ride strange roads and navigate when you don't have a mind map of the area.
2/ Broken the 3,000 barrier for the year.
3/ Decided to retire from work in four weeks time - going to be loads more opportunities to cycle.
