your activity level is your movement day to day at work etc, but not purposeful exercise.

that's why you should log your exercise separately.

Nope. Your activity setting is your non exercise life. So desk job sedentary doing construction might be active. Your workout doesn't count towards your activity level.
Then log the workout and as most estimates of workouts are high on calories eat back half your exercise calories.

you can get fairly accurate counts for running.

Then yes, eat most of it back.

Also, note that 1,200 is MFP's bottom daily allowance for health/safety reasons.
If it's giving you that calorie level, you might want to check you haven't been too aggressive with your weekly loss goal.

If you post more info, there are loads of bods on here who are good at sanity checking!

you said in your OP that you had your activity level to active? and its still only giving you 1200 cals? that means your rat eof loss is probably far too high.

so your rate of loss should be 0.5lb -1lb max.

if you're a teacher than light active is probably about right.

a fairly accurate way of calcumating calories for running is bodyweight in lbs x 0.63 x distance in miles

Some people eat back about half of their exercise calories.
