I was very similar to where you are now when I started. The biggest things that helped me were:
1. Buy a food scale and weigh everything.
2. Slow it down. My goal of losing two pounds per week simply left me starving. Dropping it to one pound per week gave me more calories and made it sustainable.
3. Find an exercise you enjoy. "Ideal" exercises aren't ideal if you can't stick to them. Going for a walk with your kids or playing around with them in the park are exercise. Just go be active.
4. Diet plans and crazy ways of eating are not necessary. You don't have to eat clean, do paleo, go vegan, or put butter in your coffee to lose weight. Find what works for you.
5. Shakes, pills, wraps, and voodoo don't work. Don't spend money on any of that junk. Same goes for detoxes, apple cider vinegar, teas, and anything else you could possibly throw money at to lose weight. It's all garbage.5 -

Most people on here eat whatever they want as long as it fits their calorie goals. I have to have coffee with 2 teaspoons of sugar and cream. Is this ok?0 -
Do your thing. Log your food, weigh it, do it day in and day out for weeks and weeks and months at a time1

Yes, but log it and measure it properly. It's going to take "x" amount of calories out of your day.
I drink my first coffee with cream and sugar as well.1 -

If you can fit it in your calories there's nothing wrong with that. I would use a food scale to measure the sugar though. I found a zero calorie sweetener I like and save a few calories without sacrificing taste in my coffee.3 -
I agree on the food scale for sugar. I don't do it anymore, but I know when I am having "issues" losing, I have to really weigh it.1
-
I agree, there are things I don't weigh anymore. If I started gaining or wanted to lose weight I'd weigh it all again. I think in the beginning everyone should weigh everything and see what serving sizes look like.0

Thanks girls, I do have a good scale because I usually overdo it on meats, especially chicken breasts. What I thought was 4 ounces was actually 7-yikes!
MFP says 2100 calories, I was planning on doing 1200. Is this too little??0 -

Yes. Why would you completely disregard what MFP says? It works. Especially if you're using a food scale and not overestimating your exercise calories.
Trust me. I'm lighter than you and have to drop down to 1200 once in awhile to see a difference and it's painful for me. You don't want to go there if you don't need to.0 -
Btw, you guys are super fit!!! Were either if you ever overweight??
I'm 5'4" and have been as high as 180. I was overweight my entire adult life from 12-28 years old. Always between 155 (when I was a kid) and maybe 180. I was afraid of the scale so I can't say for sure my highest weight. Could have been higher.0 -
Btw, you guys are super fit!!! Were either if you ever overweight??
I would go with what MFP says. 1200 sucks.
I was not always fit:

I know it SEEMS that way...but you say you "always' do 1200 calories. What do that mean? The best way to lose weight is to consistently eat at a calorie deficit you can adhere to.
1200 calories is necessary for some. Not someone who is 5'9" and 250.
Just...try what MFP says. If you haven't lost anything in two weeks, reduce by 100-200 calories.

Start with proper portions. Use a food scale for everything at first. I even used to measure my water in a measuring cup when I first started.
Then start researching nutrional value of foods, some prepackaged foods may seem good for you, but aren't. A lot of "health" bars are as bad for you as a Snickers bar. Learn to read labels.
Once you have eating down, ramp up workouts. The best workout cannot negate a bad diet. That's why nutrition is so vital.
Be patient, weight loss is not linear. Nor is it quick or easy. But, as long as you're consistent, don't let set backs stop you, and have patience, you will achieve your goals.
Best of luck!1 -

Well, here's some basics. Lean protiens: white meat chicken and fish are your friends. Complex carbs: beans, oats, legumes, potatoes. Fresh (if possible fruits & veggies). Be careful with fruit as a lot of fruit packs a lot of sugar. Two servings (1 cup is one serving) of fruit a day is a good amount. As far as veggies go I did the math: raw spinach has about 7 calories a cup - you would have to eat about 300 gallons to gain a pound calorie wise. So pack in veggies!!!
At first just go through your day normally and log everything. As you log look at the macros (fat, protien, carbs, calories) of each food see what they contribute to your diet. High calorie, low nutrition value foods -omit or switch to a healthier option. Foods that are higher in nutrional value and lower in calories - keep.
It'll be a bit of a hit and miss at first while you figure out what foods to increase, add and delete from your nutrition plan. Don't get frustrated as it is a lifestyle change to truly lose and keep the weight off.
Also, I started out morbidly obese, it's taken 2.5 years to get to where I am. I still go out with my friends to wine tastings on occasion, have junk food at my daughter's and her friends birthday parties. I eat pecan pie on Thanksgiving (never did like pumpkin or sweet potatoes). So don't worry about being perfect in your diet all the time, just do your best every day you can.1 -
Wow! So much great information thank you. If you don't mind my asking, how much were you when you started and how much did you lose? It gives me motivation to know that people who have been where I am have lost the weight so I can too!1

I have no idea how much I weighed at my heaviest: my home scale only goes to 350lbs. Yeah, I weighed more than 350lbs. I am currently between 180-185 (depending on normal fluctuations). My body fat is about 28%. I go by that now instead of weight so much since I started lifting weights. Still have some fat to lose, but getting stronger and leaner just a little bit more every day.1
