PCOS: A New Diagnosis

I've recently been diagnosed with signs of PCOS in one ovary with a tumor (which is non cancerous) in the other. This diagnosis came on due to irregular menstrual cycles and also moderated to severe continual bleeding the last couple of months. The gynecologist, whom I am unfamiliar with - I couldn't get into to see my regular doctor before September - has put me on birth control and also wants to do surgery. While he didn't express the need for the tumor to come out as soon as possible (his first date for surgery is in September followed by another date in October), the thing that concerns me is the fact that he thinks it's serious enough to come out in the first place through surgery.

I have made the appointment for surgery in October with a date in September for a follow up and second opinion in September with my normal gynecologist. My question is this:

Have any of you ladies who have been diagnosed with PCOS experienced anything like this before? If so, did you go through surgery or did you go through the whole 'wait and see while monitoriting it?' Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

I was 24 yrs old when I was diagnosed with PCOS. I also had a large, non cancerous tumor that had to be removed. At the time my period had completely stopped (something I was thrilled about). Before my period was horrendously painful. Like I was completely bedridden, in pain for 4-6 days every month for years. The tumor was causing me severe pain in my tailbone to the point where it was affecting the way that I walked. I eventually developed a limp. So surgery was a blessing. My dr. said with the tumor he also removed at least 200 cysts (well he said he stopped counting at 200 and there were alot more). But my period has been pretty consistent since the surgery. No more pain. Later I was put on birth control and metformin but the side effects didn't agree with me. All the other PCOS symptoms are for me quite manageable once I wasn't in pain every single month.
  • My periods progressively got worse in heaviness and in pain for the first two days every cycle. If I wasn't chugging water or staying on top of taking ibuprofen, I felt like I was dying (okay, that might be a little dramatic, but I didn't want to do anything but lounge around or stay in bed).

@rednote49 did your doctor give you other options or was the surgery standard protocol?

@thecookiemonsterbaker if it was just the cysts then birth control and metformin was his recommended course of action. But the tumor was causing debilitating pain. So the wait and see approach wasn't an option in my case.
