Tricking metabolism

Its a fact that eating less calories slows your metabolism. Extreme dieters will majorly screw themselves over and gain all their weight back and then some. They end up bigger than when they started because of what they have done to their metabolism! Thats why slow and steady weight loss wins the race. Its more sustaining
Ever wonder why some people come to a complete stall even with a logged calorie deficit ? Then they go off plan then back again and get a new jump at it! Your body fights you by adjusting things internally to slow everything down as it loses weight!
Can we prevent these stalls or plateaus by not being so consistent every day ?? Is it better to eat within a range of calories vs being same every day ?
I've been consistently eating 1700 calories and I've lost weight consistently. I measure my food with a scale and know all the calories I get. Funnily enough, I've never plateaued even after losing 65 lbs. Got 25 lbs left and I'm pretty sure if I stay consistent then I'll lose weight. When I depended on theories about tricking my metabolism I was 240 lbs. it wasn't until I had a consistent calorie deficit that I lost weight. Do what works for you, but no one is really going to agree with you about tricking your metabolism here when everyone here has had success with a consistent calorie diet.

My thoughts. Ignore the Obesity code. Read through the link above on diet breaks. Some of what you are talking about is just confirmation bias and, unless you are very diligent in your tracking of both intake, exercise and weight, I suspect it's nothing more than weight loss not being linear. Yeah, I've "whooshed" during my weight loss, but it happens even if I stick to plan. Go a couple weeks fluctuation at one weight and then lose 5-6 pounds over a couple of days. Just how it is.
I don't think you can prevent the stalls etc. and you just have to accept that they will happen. You certainly can't prevent them by trying to confuse your metabolism.
But if you want to try, no one will stop you. Just doesn't make much sense to me.7 -

Am I missing something? I thought you were the one who came in with questions. If you find that The Obesity Code is helping you, go for it. We should all do what brings us success as individuals. But it's not for the reasons you think.
Yes you are missing something! Going back to my original question....mfp sets your daily calories to eat every day .... do you guys fluctuate from that to try and work better with your metabolism (since you dont like the word tricked) ? Or do you consistently go by your daily calories as set on mfp ?
I am switching over from ww which obviously does things differently! We are given a range to eat in!
Your metabolism cannot be manipulated, tricked, scared into submission, etc. etc.
Really so you have the same metabolism rate since birth then ? Did you know increased muscle mass speeds metabolic rate ? Decreased caloric intake slows it ? Being a bigger person increases it vs being a smaller person which is why bigger people have higher caloric needs18 -
I vary my exercise and my calorie intake by the hour, sometimes by the minute... my body never knows what to expect. it's awesome!!!7
-
I just eat within my calorie goals, and it naturally varies every day. And I eat different foods from day to day. And I'm losing weight. My only "trick your metabolism" thing is I exercise. That seems to really throw my metabolism for a loop! It's so confused it doesn't know what to do, other than to give me a little more pep to my step while I continue to lose weight.1

People of different sizes have different calorie needs. Adults have higher calorie needs than children. Nobody denies this. This has nothing to do with "tricking" your metabolism.9 -

Not really! Just trying to be funny and its not. If you look up how metabolism works during weight loss you would know what I mean ! Read the book the obesity code.
Your body tries to maintain thats why our metabolism changes..slower and faster! If you always eat at 1300 cals for example your metab will slow down and so will your weight loss along with other involved factors. By varied eating you can keep your metabolism more revved up. Its a way to fool your system rather than it being at a consistent rate.
You asked for input, we gave it to you. You rejected it, so clearly there is some specific answer you want to her. PM it to me, I'll post it for you, and we can all go on with our day.
Yes i did and its fine if you disagree! My question was just asking if you stick to your daily set limit on mfp! For those who fluctuate it I was wondering how they do it and how it has worked for them!
I didnt really need sarcastic comments.2 -
@tammystarren - I highly recommend that you do not take one source as complete truth for any topic, including weight loss. If you keep an open mind, you can then read and learn about several theories on a topic before making an educated decision on what to believe. Don't underestimate an author's definitive interest to sell as many books as possible - sometimes an author will cherry pick data to support a hypothesis, as might be the case with the book you reference (I haven't read the book so I don't know). Be inquisitive, be mindful, evaluate references and never stop learning.
In the meantime, trust that many of us on these forums have been in your shoes. What you are stating is indeed "woo" about tricking your metabolism - at least from my educated perspective by reading many peer reviewed articles and books on the topic. I challenge you to complete your own assessment to determine if you truly want to continue to believe that the metabolism can be tricked - if that's what you ultimately believe as a result of your assessment of several reliable sources, then more power to you.
Dependent on your findings, create a plan then to "trick your metabolism" as best as you can given the information you gathered from multiple sources. If (when) that process doesn't work (because it's woo), we will be here to help you figure out how best to proceed forward with tried and true methods based on CICO as the simple formula of truth to sustainable weight loss.
All the best on your journey.8 -

Apparently it's not fine if we disagree because you've made it very clear that we are all wrong.
But if you really want to continue down this path, when you ask about varying/fluctuating intake, how big of a variation are you asking about? No one ever eats the exact same amount of calories each day... is 10% enough? 25%? For some that could only be 120 cals per day, for others it could be 1000.

Exactly but we CAN purposely affect and change our metabolism! Okay so forget about tricking as you know what I mean!!!! I guess i should say purposely altering! We can do this by changing our body mass increasing exercise and by changing our caloric intake for example! Thats my point! Would our metabolism be more revved up and effective at weight loss if we put more of a range in our caloric intake than by staying the same every day!
Its a simple question! I was asking about those who do this and how they do that with mfp so that i can proceed with this program!14 -

If your body could significantly slow your metabolic rate, why isn't it set to low all the time instead of wasting precious energy that could be stuffed into fat reserves instead to help you through a famine later.8 -
Your metabolism does what it needs to, when it needs to. It's too busy performing vital functions on the daily to care about much else. You mention extreme dieters screwing up their metabolism. Yes, that's a thing, and it's why you shouldn't do extreme diets. Otherwise, the fact that smaller people need fewer calories isn't a bad thing. It's how your body is supposed to work.5

Changing your body mass does have an impact. I'd argue it's not significant unless the change in mass is significant, but that's for another conversation.
Increasing exercise does increase your metabolism for as long as your exercising. Again, your statement is true, but context is important. If/when you stop exercising, your metabolism returns to normal. That's way oversimplified, but it works for this conversation.
Changing your caloric intake I guess in the most strictest of senses does impact metabolism based on TEF, but that's REALLY insignificant. Any meaningful impact on metabolism from calorie intake would require much longer periods of time than simply varying intake over the course of days or weeks.7 -

I am unaware of any evidence demonstrating that our metabolism is more effective when we vary our day-to-day intake.
That said, many people here do vary their intake day-to-day so that they can do things like eat more on the weekends or fuel their higher activity days. If you log your activity calories and eat those back, it's likely that you're going to be eating a different amount on different days. And if you go by a weekly calorie goal, you'll probably be doing the same thing.3 -

The short answer to you question "Would our metabolism be more revved up and effective at weight loss if we put more of a range in our caloric intake than by staying the same every day!" is no. Unless you have some specific information proving it does (and the Obesity Code is not evidence), forget this idea for weight loss.
Now if you want to eat a varied calorie allowance, many here do. Less during the week and more on weekends, or a variation of intermittent fasting, and many find it helps them with weight loss as it helps them hit their weekly calorie goal to eat this way. That comes down to personal preference. If you want to use MFP to set a daily goal that varies, you will need to pay for the premium version. I look at the week view on the app (doesn't work on the website) and try to hit my goals on a weekly basis, instead of focusing on the daily. But that is so I can have a higher day when going out.1 -
I think an unfortunate word choice has led to a lot of harsh criticism for the OP. Obviously there's no way to "trick" one's metabolism, but adaptive thermogenesis is real, hunger and leptein fluctuations can be manipulated with increases in caloric intake (refeeds). Instead of dismissing her, maybe trying to understand what she's asking and trying to say might help explain things better.
So to help answer your question OP, many people use refeeds, and alternating intakes, not necessarily to trick one's metabolism, but to make long term dieting easier to handle.8 -

I am unaware of it too but if you look at people who plateau I find it very interesting the methods they use to get going again. Its fine I will just try and adjust things as I see fit and will eventually figure out how my body responds. Adaptive thermogenesis is largely insignificant and hunger and leptin isn't your "metabolism being revved up". Eating more or less calories every few days does not change your weight loss outcome vs. having the same average intake over the time period.10 -
