Protein powder oatmeal: HOW?

I want to eat protein powder oatmeal, but I think I don't know how to do it. I've tried putting it in the oatmeal and then microwaving it (it turns to plastic) or scooping it into cooked oatmeal(had a grainy consistency, even after being thoroughly stirred). How do people do it?

    I stir it after but yes it has a weird consistency... so I never do it.

    Probably the best way is to make it as a smoothie, half cup oatmeal, cup of almond milk, one scoop of protein blend and enjoy.

    If I ever have oatmeal (rarely), I cook the oatmeal with water. I add my protein powder in after and it is a little bit thicker, so I add some more water in.

    Yeah, I just want to see if it's possible to do it as hot oatmeal without weird texture issues.

    Not when I last did it. Just the protein powder didn't taste the best.

    I might be doing it wrong, but I didn't die or get sick.

    Here's what I do: I use old fashioned (long cooking) rolled oats. I use my food scale to weigh out however many grams of oatmeal I want, however many grams of protein powder I want (based on how many grams are in the "scoop" serving size and how much of a scoop I wanted to use), and then however many grams of anything else I want that day (ex. Brown sugar, cinnamon, fruit, almonds on top, etc). I put everything in a pot on the stove (except almonds if I'm using them) and add in some extra water to account for the protein powder. This is important for avoiding grainy, clumpy oatmeal. It's usually around a cup and a half of water total, give or take some. Then I cook it as usual. It's pretty yum. I normally use vanilla protein powder, but I'm planning to get some chocolate soon so that I can find out if it's good with bananas or peanut butter.

    Not when I last did it. Just the protein powder didn't taste the best.
    I'm going to try a different brand then. I've been using Pure Protein (but Publix has Muscle Milk on for 17.99)

    Maybe the problem is that I microwave my oats. I've tried the extra water trick-even to the point where I ended up with soupy grainy oats. I haven't had almonds in ages! Need to add them to the list.

    I don’t eat oatmeal lately, but my whey protein blends beautifully with greek yogurt. You could mix the powder with yogurt and then blend it into your oatmeal. I wouldn’t recommend heating the yogurt, it gets weird.

    I've noticed cheap protein makes the oatmeal taste worse. Cheaper proteins don't dissolve as well. I was using some walmart protein just for oatmeal, and it tasted bad, then started using my main protein in my oatmeal (Optimum Nutrition), it dissolves just fine.

    So funny you should ask this today! I just bought some protein powder for the first time and was debating how to add it to my oatmeal this a.m.! I didn't think it sounded like a good idea to cook it, and I feared the weird texture if I stirred it in afterward. I debated over it so long my husband said, "Seems like a good weight loss tool- by the time you get your breakfast made, it'll be time for lunch!" In the end, I settled for mixing it with the almond milk I usually have on it, took a bite, and promptly poured it back off into the sink! I think I'm just going to have it at a different time, in a different way :/

    I make my oatmeal in the microwave with protein powder and it changes neither the taste nor the texture (I use unflavoured whey). I mix the protein powder with the dry oats, add a pinch of salt, some cinnamon, sometimes a bit of honey, and milk, and put it in the microwave. I add any other condiments (fruit, nut butter) after microwaving it.

    This is exactly what I do then I whip it till it gets a nice smooth texture than add a Tbs peanut butter mix again, so filling.

    This sounds like the way to go.
    I've been wanting to try it, but have feared ending up with a bowl of lumpy cement!

    Yeah, I am currently using a WM whey protein powder and it doesn't fully dissolve in anything. It's just unbearable in oatmeal.

    The grainy, cement-like texture when using protein powder in oatmeal can be resolved by 1) using a whey/casein blend or a pure casein powder, 2) using less protein powder.

    I typically use 1/2 scoop of a blend, mixed in at the end with coconut oil. It comes out great.

    Use extra water when you microwave the oats. It will come out of the microwave as a soupy mixture, but will get completely absorbed when you stir in the protein powder.

    If you want an extra treat, stick a spoonful of peanut butter into the oatmeal immediately after it comes out of the microwave. Creamy goodness.

    You've just got to mix the powder with a little bit of water first... just enough to have an almost greek yogurt-like consistency. Add it to the oatmeal after the oatmeal has cooled a little... otherwise you end up with grainy lumps. It helps if you make the oats a little runny (the protein will thicken it up a lot)

    if you cook it on the stove it works just fine.. i cook quick oats (steel cut these days) with water on the stove for 2 minutes then add liquid egg whites and protein powder to the pot, then cook until the excess liquid is absorbed.

    I've come to love the odd texture of cooked protein powder in my oatmeal. I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard--it's the finest powder and has no grit or graininess to it. I mix the protein with some water to make a slurry (and get rid of any lumps) then add the oatmeal and more water and microwave.

    I pretty much only eat oatmeal because I have some rice protein I'm trying to use up, and this is the least terrible way. (Rice protein is really gritty.) Adding berries helps with the texture, I've found. And increasing my oatmeal to protein powder ratio, though that obviously adds calories.

    Hey. The best way to avoid this is to make sure the porridge isn't too hot when you stir in. I have found that by cooking the oats with water, then when done adding a dash of milk (to cool oats down a bit) and then the protein powder works well!

    Alternatively, try using a protein powder that is a blend of casein and whey - or a vegan blend. These work better at higher temperatures so no need to cool oats before adding!

    I use the ready to drink Premier Protein shakes (from costco or walmart) in place of the water (most of it) when cooking the oatmeal in the microwave. You could probably do the same thing with powder - make a protein shake out of it first, then use that instead of or in addition to the water you add to your oatmeal? Mine comes out very creamy.

    Use casein and not whey. The heat affects it much less!

    When I do it, I make my oatmeal in the rice cooker (how I always make steel cut oats) and then when it's done mix in the protein powder. I usually use a bit of extra water when cooking the oats, but I find that doing it this way and using whey it mixes really easily, no odd taste or grit. (One reason I have not liked any vegan protein powders I've tried is that they don't seem to mix as easily.)

    I tried and the consistency was gross (I eat oatmeal 4 or 5 times per week) so for the days I want the extra protein I'll make a smoothie with milk, banana, blueberries, oatmeal (quick oats but uncooked) & protein powder. It makes a surprisingly satisfying meal.
