Coccyx protrusion and pain after significant weight loss

I have lost almost 5 stone and I'm now within a healthy weight range with only 13lb until I reach my goal. I have noticed that the past week or so I have trouble sitting down (even on my soft sofa) because I can feel my coccyx sticking out so much and it starts to hurt after a while so I have to get up and move around. Laying down in bed I can also feel it sticking out quite a lot (but I can feel a lot of my bones that I couldn't before too). I have 6 children and my last baby was quite big so I'm wondering if that has any significance in changing the shape of my pelvis or whether this is purely down to weight loss? Is it a common problem? I aim to increase my glute muscles and tone up in the hope that this will help. I'm worried that I will injure myself if I fall or sit down too hard. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do?

It's not a lot of pain (only when I sit for a while on it) but I think I will see a doctor about it to check. Thank you.

I had a baby about 9 months ago, I'm not sure that is common. I haven't experienced what you're talking about. I would see a doctor just to be sure!

Yes I've lost over 170 pounds and I have this issue. When I sit too long in a certain position it is very painful and I have to move around. It's like there is no padding now and over the years the muscles also disappeared from inactivity. I'm also working on glutes, but not sure what else to do. If I sit on an unpadded chair it feels like I'm sitting directly on my tailbone.

That's exactly what it feels like.

Its not uncommon to fracture your coccyx during pregnancy and/or delivery. There isn't much to be done for it but it couldn't hurt to get a consultation with a specialist (because most other drs will blow this off). Beware of any Chiro who suggests adjustment of this; The procedure they would use is very invasive and is not practiced widely.

Thank you. I shall search around. My last baby had a shoulder dystocia so I did wonder if that might have changed the shape. My pelvis did hurt for a while after delivery but not the coccyx area. He is 2 now and I haven't had problems since. It's just the last week that I have really noticed it protruding and hurting after sitting so assumed it's because I have lost all my padding but did wonder if the babies had made a difference.

This happened to me after I lost 5 stone! I did go to the doctor eventually and he gave me some gel to put on, which helped a little. Eventually it seems my body got used to its new shape, and it stopped hurting. I don't have any children yet, so for me it wasn't related to that.

I had to get a couple coccyx cushions. They are awesome, I completed recommend them.

Thank you for asking this! I have the same problem. I just assumed it was from a fall I had prior to weight loss. I'm always uncomfortable but not really in pain per se. Just, sitting is not fun anymore.

I suppose it makes sense really. It's likely to be uncomfortable if all the padding disappears but it's certainly something that I never expected or even gave a second thought until it started to affect me.

Used to happen to me when I was a teen and was very very skinny due to tremendous activity. Get some padding on your butt. Grow the glutes. Squats, glute specific exercises.
