I'm not sure if I should put active or lightly active. I have a job I work 4-5 days a week where I'm walking around a lot and I plan on going to the gym 2-3 times a week

    Gym is exercise not activity - different things on here.

    The gym is separate from your activity level - you'd log that exercise separately. Start with one - see how it goes for a few weeks and then adjust accordingly.

    You will note that the descriptors make no mention of exercise for an activity level...the way MFP is designed is to select an activity level that is commensurate with what you do most days without exercise...then you log any deliberate exercise you do and get additional calories to eat to account for that.

    Then don't set your goal on here - go to a TDEE site instead, get a number that already includes your exercise and set that manually on here.

    Tools are designed to be used in a certain way. What you are doing is like using a screwdriver as a chisel - it will sort of work, but badly.

    Sedentary: Spend most of the day sitting (e.g. bank teller, desk job)
    Lightly Active: Spend a good part of the day on your feet (e.g. teacher, salesperson)
    Active: Spend a good part of the day doing some physical activity (e.g. food server, postal carrier)
    Very Active: Spend most of the day doing heavy physical activity (e.g. bike messenger, carpenter)

    See which job you are most like. Your exercise is completely separate from activity level. I have a desk job and for exercise I walk 1-3 miles 4X a week and have dance classes and socials 5-7 hrs a week, plus lifting and yoga. I have myself set as Sedentary.

    Did you read the descriptions of the jobs for each level? Which one is yours more like?
