Hey guys I’m trying to figure out how many carbs I need to eat a day? My doc said 20 but that seems like nothing. Please help. I’ve gained 8 lbs back and feeling really depressed.

If you want to lose weight, focus on calories not carbs. You can lose weight eating a high % of carbs if that's what you like to do.6

Why did your doctor say 20 grams?
I am diabetic and I have been losing just fine (82 lb so far) and my blood glucose numbers are normal. I eat 35% of my calories as carbs (currently 140 grams)5 -
Carbs don’t make you gain weight. Excess calories do. Sounds like your doctor has a keto agenda.8

20 g of carb is basically vegetables only. I tried a low carb/high protein once and was very disappointed. It only measured carbs and protein (not calories) and as I recall I couldn't even keep my carbs down to the target of 50 g. For me it was torture. Also I'm not all that meat crazy so had a hard time getting the protein high enough. Fats were always high as they were not measured at all and you got to have calories somewhere. Bottom line besides being miserable I lost very little weight after a couple months of logging the carbs & protein. I'm sure my calories were just too high. I too am diabetic and avoid sugar and eat very small portions of white starches so that my carbs run closer to 100-120 g, unless I splurge and have a dessert. And like everyone else says, it the calories that make you gain weight. I've had no problem losing weight since I started logging calories and balancing macros. I'd start out at the recommended and settings and slowly lower the carbs until you reach your good range.1

If your doctor said 20 grams of carbs and didn't provide an explanation of why this was necessary for you or how to accomplish it, you should get a better doctor.19 -

Agreed, although I'd first try asking the doctor for an explanation.4 -
While I agree it's the calories and not the carbs that are crucial. Carbs, especially white carbs are the primary reason for obesity in Aemrica. Thats why Paloe based diet plans actually gained so much popularity. I recommend you read the book Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo. You'll get some perspective on the carbs and why medical docs are now recommending to lower carb intake. My advice is to use an "elimination diet" and slowly bring carbs into your diet, to find what actually works for you.
Here is what Scientific America has to say regarding eating wrong kind of carbs -'The hormone hypothesis suggests that the only way to prevent this downward spiral from happening, and to reverse it when it does, is to avoid the sugars and carbohydrates that work to raise insulin levels.'

Do some research on Blue Zones...
The obesity epidemic is a resulting of stuffing the face full of all kinds of stuff and not moving...
The SAD is a crap diet that is too high in pretty much everything...that's what's driving obesity...not eating a potato or rice or whatever...11 -

People aren't fat because of rice, potatoes, and cauliflower. It's because they're eating more of everything than their bodies can use.

Wrong. Excess calories (coupled with decreased activity) are the primary reason for obesity in America (and elsewhere). And the "insulin hypothesis" is junk science which ignores basic physiology. Carbs don't make you fat, excess calorie intake makes you fat.6 -
So you guys are saying it's not the carbs in the football sized loaded potato that are making me fat?... You think it might be the 1000+ calories in that giant loaded tater instead?...9

Just FYI. That wasn't a serious question. I believe in CICO and am not afraid of carbs5 -
20 grams of carbohydrates per day sounds very unhealthy. How could you possibly even eat enough fruits and vegetables on that regimen? I eat 50-60 percent of calories from carbohydrates and I am losing weight.0

Did the doc mean 20% maybe?
That's a more reasonable suggestion than 20 grams anyway.3 -

I'll research on that but people should know that there are good carbs and bad carbs and about the glycemic index.
Also, regarding the hormonal wreaking, the bad carbs are definitely related to leptin insensitivity, which basically implies people can't tell when they are full, and continue to gobble more food.
There is much scientific research on that- including this one
Consumption of carbohydrate with high glycemic load may lead to leptin resistance - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4251481/19 -
...
(I'm too literal sometimes!) ;-)0 -

I've been wondering that too.... Either way, it's irrelevant to being in a calorie deficit2 -
You know what increases leptin sensitivity? Not being sedentary.
I (as usual) find the glycemic index thing silly as who on earth eats foods on their own?
On the other hand, many foods that ALSO have low GI happen to be high in nutrients and quite filling. My guess is that eating such foods and having a diverse diet (sufficient protein and fiber and some healthy fat) DOES correlate with eating better and not overeating, but that doesn't mean GI is a cause one way or the other.9 -
Since your DOCTOR who has access to your...you know...medical info perhaps you should do as he/she tells you. I would definitely find out why he/she wants you to eat so few carbs or seek out a second opinion
Only having 20 carbs a day doesn't cause anyone to gain weight...you're gaining weight because you're eating more calories then you're burning0
