Tall Women: How did you choose your maintenance weight.

I'm 175 cm.... or 5'9" small build

Last September I was down to 141. Really thin. I felt fine, liked how my tiny clothes fit, but I knew I couldn't maintain that weight for any length of time. It took too much energy and commitment.
I started running and found I was starving ALL the time, running out of 'gas' on my runs. It was time to eat more. So I began more serious training and weights and ate more protein and added more carbs. I felt better, but over last winter and now this year, I gained about 15 pounds. I feel pudgy....
Back to serious attention of my intake and I'm down 5 now. Believe I have 5 to go. I think around 145 I'll be able to run, feel and look good, and enjoy my life more. Below that and my friends begin to comment on my looks.

I'm 5'11 and aiming for 175lbs. At least at the moment. I have been heavy for a long time and wanted to hit a comfortable place and maintain there for a while before I decide to go further. 175 is the very tippy top of the healthy BMI range for that height. But so much better than 250, which is where I started.
And I got my first "you are too skinny! Stop losing weight!" from a co-worker today. With 10lbs still to go.3 -
Hi, I'm 5'9 1/2 and currently 128 lbs. I have been lighter and heavier, but this current weight is where I feel at ease and confortable to maintain.
It is slightly low in termps of BMI, but I have a good amount of body fats and muscle tissue.
In my opinion, if as you are healthy and feel well in your body, that is what's important. Don't let others put you down with cheap judgements, telling you you are too heavy or too skinny.
Dare listen to yourself, seek what you feel good with, and ask your doctor for guidance to make sure if you doubt. Eating balanced, sleeping well, taking care of yourself and working out is just as important than a mere number on a scale to determine your health and well being.3 -
I'm about 5'11" with a broader/muscular build and in my early 20s. Right now I'm one pound away from my halfway goal of 70 pounds lost.
As a tall woman, friends would always guess I was around 180 lbs. when I was indeed 215+ lbs., and when I'd (sometimes lol) reveal my actual weight, they were shocked and confused at how I could carry weight so well -
SO fast forward to weighing 249.0 at my heaviest in May 2017, I set my goal to weigh 179.0 lbs to lose exactly 70 lbs., figuring I'll look pretty slender. This is a few pounds higher than suggested BMI, but my frame is naturally more broad and muscular than tall women who could be models. Once I reach that weight, I will adjust if needed.0 -

Im 5'9 large frame I prefer 200lbs 29% body fat. I feel sexiest at that weight and my spouse hates when I lose my T/A2

Completely reasonable! Nothing wrong with being curvy or even being happy on the higher end of the BMI range.
I feel like I want to get to know this new body before I push it too far. Maybe this will work for me long-term, maybe not. But it's worth investigating!1 -
I am a hair shy of 6' and maintaining at 145. I have a very small frame, with a 4.5" wrist, so I'm happy with this weight. In my twenties before I had my kids I was lighter, but I had a really active job too. Plus I've always exercised my whole life. That menopause thing really did a number on me in my early forties and also a switch to a stressful sedentary job with a long commute. I gained 25 pounds in four years, but it all landed in my stomach. It wasn't evenly spread out or anything, which would have been okay. I looked pregnant actually, so I was really unhappy with my shape.
I ended up herniating a disc because of inactivity, and then I was a complete physical wreck for over a year. It was all from sitting on my duff over 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. I quit my job and went back to the lifestyle that I'd relied on all through my twenties and thirties that balanced my life with exercise better. I got back into the pool after a 12 year absence and the weight started coming off. Once I added in calorie restriction I lost the 25 pounds, and I'm now the weight I was in my early thirties at 51 years old.
I feel good, and I'm happy with how I look. I have the "swimmer's body" type with large muscular shoulders and arms, and a small waist and larger "softer" hips and thighs. Some of my weight distribution is genetic, but I do believe a lot is due to the sport I chose that changed my shape over many years.
Go with the weight that makes you feel good, OP, because weight distribution is different for everyone. You have to like how you look, and feel good and be healthy, no matter whether you're at the top end of the healthy BMI range, or the bottom end (like me). Just watch and see how it goes!0 -

It's very cool to see another woman that's my height, started near the same weight as me/was heavy for a long time and aiming for the same weight as I did. Good luck losing those last 10 pounds.3 -
I'm 5'11" and started the year at 300 lbs so setting a goal of getting to 199 seemed like a good idea. I haven't weighed in the hundreds since I was in Jr. High. I'm down 70 lbs right now and still can't really wrap my head around getting there. A healthy BMI is about 20 lbs less than that so I may re-evaluate once I'm under 200.

Makes complete sense to me. Dropping past the 200lb mark was amazing and it happened faster than I thought. Losing 70lbs is incredible!
It makes sense to me to set a goal that I know I can achieve. Hitting 199 is a great place to aim for. And even if you stopped there and maintained for a while, just think of how far you have come and how much better you feel. You can always make a new goal for after.1 -
I feel really good around 180 and I am 5'11 too. Last body fat dunk test I was 176 and only 21% body fat jeans/ dress pants size 4/6 . Part of me would like to get lower than that again. My thinnest was 156 over 10 years ago but I was an avid half marathoner and my body was not tone or strong, and I like the way it looks more at 180 with more muscle. That said it wouldn't hurt to see if I can maintain strength but get lighter. When I gain weight at 180 it's pretty noticeable and that can be discouraging. I'd like to have more wiggle room. I think it depends on your personal body and how much muscle you have or want.0

5'9 and a half.
I tried and tried, starved, worked out, Worked out 20-30 hours a week... got down to 178. At 178 I had really well defined abdominal muscles. I also did 20 hours of Kung fu a week and 10 hours of weightlifting. By comparison I was 198 when I got through basic training and I could fireman carry a fellow soldier in full battle rattle. Ya I got BIGGER.
After talking about it with my husband who is has always been my rock and person who sees me less harshly then I see myself we agreed that between 195-205 was ideal for me. But as far as proof, that is the weight where I have the best physical performance and don't have to deprive and work constantly.
The Army Hated that I was that big, I was constantly subjected to humiliating tape measurements and threats of punitive action, but it just isn't worth being 178. But I went on starvation diet after starvation diet, Lost three pregnancies and never got below 200. In fact I damaged my metabolism so badly that I gained weight, it became harder and harder to lose and my diets got more and more restrictive. By the time I got out of the Army I was fat, injured and weak. All because I kept trying to reach this stupid "ideal" that I didn't have time to do properly. I didn't have 30 hours a week to work out in the Army.
Moral of the story, the BMI is garbage. It wasn't designed to measure a person, it was designed to measure a population. It also wasn't designed to gage obesity, it was designed to gage malnutrition. So throw it out.
Instead, he honest and kind to yourself. What do you want out of your body? What can your body give you and what can you reasonably do to get your body to perform? And ultimately, are your behaviors needed to reach this weight goal healthy? If all of these answers are not coming from a place of love, you might want to get someone who loves you involved.8 -
Im 6ft my maintain weight is currently 137. I'm happy here ! Just pick a weight you're most happy with, or better yet, not weight but how your body looks!11

Im 5'8.75" and I chose 140lbs for my maintenance weight because it was where I felt I have looked the best in the past. Ive been (a lot) bigger and smaller than that but that seems to be my sweet spot. There is nothing wrong with setting a goal and reevaluating once you hit it though0

5’11 (180cm) and I would be considered athletic build, broad shoulders & strong legs/calves. 19% bodyfat and I’m at 165 at the moment. I’ve being down to 150 looked good as I lost the fat from the legs which is the last to go for me, but was quite hard to maintain and I think I cut calories/macros to harshly to get to it - so now I’d like to bounce around 158lb watching calories but have scheduled nights off intermittently0

5'7 not sure if I qualify for tall but my range is 130 to 140. Trying to narrow it down little and avoid winter gain this year so hope to be 130 to 1351

5'10". When I was young, I felt best at 160, looked best at 140, but always hungry, weak. Now that I'm old. I want health and energy more than looks. First goal 170, top of healthy bmi. Will decide what next when I get closer. Now at 215.

Op, did you ask the first Dr. Why? My dads Dr. Wanted him to keep his weight at 180. Dad was happier at 160. Either was a good weight for him, but it was so much easier to keep all his meds regulated at 180. Easy to understand, but we might have never known why if he hadn't explained it.

I'm 5'8" with a large, athletic build, currently about 175. (down from 200 when I started)
My goal weight is 150 which I feel like I could live comfortably with and still eat and have the occasional glass of wine. I'm 46...the jig is up. I don't think I could easily maintain anything lower than that. The last time I was 145 I was in college and I starved myself and worked out 2x a day. I fainted twice that summer. At 150 I look pretty skinny. Honestly, I'll be happy with 155.2 -

Im always around 145 - 155lbs. I like being 140-145 the best. But the easiest for me is to maintain 150. In order for me to be 140-something I have to workout everyday. I dont diet but dont eat like a pig either. I never crave sugar because I drink apple vinegar. But I do crave salty and crunchy snacks. If I dont eat snacks then it's easy to be in 140s zone. Also I workout everyday or pretty much doing something intense like kickboxing and other workouts.

I'm 5'9 and 156lbs, which is perfect for me right now. I've managed to maintain it and I feel so much better. I started out at 125lbs in February.3

I'm 140 and 5'11 I find it very easy to maintain and am never hungry, when I am I just eat within my maintainence calories which are 2200 so I get plenty of food

I'm ok with that. So to answer your question, I'm maintaining right now between 165-170 during this reverse diet. I started at 190 in January.0 -

Are you a particularly tiny build as 130 is actually underweight for your height ?3 -

130 is underweight for 5'11", even if you have a tiny frame like mine. Trust me on this, it's not going to feel or look good in the long run. 135 to 145 range is better, and start strength training (If you haven't already) for a nicer body composition.4 -
I'm just under 6 ft and currently 159.5 or so. My highest has been around 167 with less muscle. I ran a half marathon this year and I've recently started weight training (like, 2 weeks ago--I keep flexing in front of my husband and asking him if I look ripped yet). I normally eat 1800-2200 calories, but more if I'm hungry. The last few days I've been stressed and not quite eating enough (1300-1500), but I know that'll pass soon as my appetite comes back. I'm slowly losing to get down to the lower 150s then maintain. I'm in no rush (plus I used to have an eating disorder so being too stringent with weighing etc backfires for me). Nice to have other tall friends so feel free to add me, anyone. :-)4

I am 66 and in a wheelchair with MS. I am 5’9” and maintaining at 127. I don’t exercise that much and am in a size 10. I am glad to be the same size from one month to the next.2
