My Introduction to P90X...

My 17-year-old son has been home on his summer break from high school and for me that has meant adjusting to having someone else in the house during the day. More noise, more conversation, more snacks in the house since he's always hungry. The latter can pose the biggest challenge for me because I do NOT need more snacks!

He has a part-time job and with his first paycheck he purchased the P90X workout DVD set. He did weight training for p.e. in school so he wanted to stay in shape.

I need to workout too so I decided to join him. He put in the first DVD and after about 10 minutes into the segment I felt the burn, was sweating, out of breath, and knew I would feel this the next day but it actually seemed doable. No pain, no gain, right? I must be in better shape than I thought because it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Then dear son informed me it was just the warm-up. Wait. What? If that was the warm-up, then what....Oh.

I stuck around to observe some of the real workout and I got sore just watching it. I could have done it with him but we can't afford to call paramedics and I knew once I got on the floor there would be no getting me up.

But I'm so proud of him for being dedicated to fitness even though my living room smells like a locker room. As for me, I'll be content to observe and maybe now and then I'll do a few reps of something I see that I can actually manage. Or not. My 54 year old out of shape body just can't handle this.

    Cindy,

C'mon girl get off the couch and do it! Don't compare yourself to your son or even the peeps in the video, do what you can do. 2 reps are better than none and as the time goes on you will be able to do more. On the cardio days if it's to much do something else, but remember muscle burns fat a higher rate than fat burns fat.
  • haha thats awesome...thats kinda how i felt after starting the insanity dvds.... i would try to do as best as you can and it WILL get easier. these tapes of such an adjustment for your body because we are not used to doing that kind of workout. you can do it!! good luck.

Cindy, you are the perfect candidate for P90X!!! You can do this. For the first 90 days just do the P90X Lean Version...I believe your son was doing the classic version. The worst thing to do is to match the the reps, weight and pace that P90X grads are doing on the video initially. Just show up 6 days a week, no excuses, no quitting, do not pause the workout, just do the best you can for the duration of the exercise and go on to the next exercise when they do. Do not verbalize of think negative thoughts like "I can't do that" "I'm not that flexable", etc. Say things like "I could only do 2 reps today but in two weeks I'll be doing 4 reps". Empower yourself Cindy. There will be enough negative people around you so why do there job for them.

Your whole life you have taken care of everyone now it's time to take care of yourself...you deserve it. Everyday wake up, clear your mind, get your head right & control your attitude or it will control you.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I do know that anything I do is better than nothing and I don't have to keep up with the people on the DVD. It's just quite a workout for someone like me to wrap her mind (and body) around.

Bring it! The first week = hell! But by the next week you're feeling a lot better and you'll see you'll be able to do a lot more than when you first started. :)

sorry, i was chuckling reading this, because something like that happened to me a few years back! i got some pilates dvds, and put the first one on. after what seemed like forever doing exercises, with my abs burning like never before, the perky guy on the tv said, " now that we're all warmed up, let's work on our abdominals!!". if you're feeling the burn with the warm up, continue doing it for a few days. by then you should be feeling the burn less, and can do some of the real workout. it's just like walking, you can walk a little farther every day. you can do this, you know you can, it just takes persistence. sometimes i think persistence is the most important component to losing weight.
