Exercise calories

How does MFP calculate calories for exercise - like steps in particular? Is there a formula/ratio? I have MFP synced with my Fitbit and sometimes it shows a lot of calories and sometimes a lot less for the same number of steps. Also, is there a certain time it syncs? Sometimes it seems to not reflect the calories that I think I've earned. When you close out your diary for the day, does it stop syncing?

I've wondered the same thing, fitbit calories are usually ridiculously high for me. I can wash dishes and it adds as steps! I only take notice of my workout calories that I manually put onto Mfp after reading on fitbit...

Some FitBits record steps based on arm movements......I like My FitBit One because it doesn't do that.
