Anyone else nervous about all the food-centric holidays quickly approaching? Im relatively confident that I’ll stick to a caloric deficit, but I’m definitely worried about all the temptation that will be out there and balancing diet and splurges.

To me is just another day lol

No...it's a handful of celebratory days...they're not particularly material to the big picture. I also don't treat the whole two months as some reason to go completely off the rails...it's pretty much business as usual outside of Thanksgiving day, Christmas eve, Christmas day, and New Years eve...that's 4 days out of 365...

Nope, I am looking forward to it! This year, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas day are going to be *free* days for me. No logging, no worrying, just enjoying the days and eating what I want. I may workout a little extra that week or skip breakfast those days, but I am not holding myself to any specific "rules" those days.

The only parameter I have given myself is that those three days are it. No extending it out for a week, or the whole month, etc. Outside of those three days, I am sticking with my plan and logging everything.

I'm going to enjoy it. I remember seeing on here a good piece of advice. It not what you eat on the holidays but the days in between them

Not sure why anyone would give this a "whoo". Was it the word spluges?

I'm guessing they mean like "who-hoo" or "yippee." I'm confused as to what that icon means. It has a smiley face, so I sort of think it means "yay." But... given how much the word Woo is used on this site with reference to "weight loss crap/myth," I don't know.

I'm definitely worried, since this is my first holiday season since I started to count calories and exercise. (These are really early days...started exercising in Sept. and logging calories here since 11/4) I love stuffing more than life itself. I love dark meat turkey. My sister-in-law the pastry chef is making pie, so I'm definitely eating that. I'll probably have a very small breakfast and lunch that day and take advantage of the gym at the hotel we're staying at. I really need to not blow it, because I've lost so little and struggled so much with my weight for the past 4 years.

We're visiting my husband's family, and their way of showing love involves stuffing you with food until you can't move. Somehow, I have to politely decline.

Please don't let the worry of food ruin your Holiday. Eat and be merry, it's ONE day. Just don't make it into more that that.

How’s everyone going to weigh and measure, particularly with guests at the table? Eyeball and hope for the best?

I'm not. I'm going to eat whatever I want for a day. Maybe two. Then I'll get back at it again. Don't forget this is a lifestyle change. There are going to be days/situations where you are not going to be perfect, let this be one of them.

  • Not anymore. I have realized and accepted that it's holiDAYS, not holiMONTHS, and I don't have to accept any offer just because. I can still eat whatever I want, and I do.

@Kommevaran nails it out of the park. It’s singular days, not three months. And if you’re worried about family gatherings, bring some home and enjoy it in smaller portions over the next week. They likely want you to take some home with you anyway.

I just have to take it as it comes. I cannot deny I am in dread of it this year but that is because I have become overly obsessed with my weight and fearful of losing control... I have had past Christmas's where I have not been able to get back to my regular regime for weeks after. My mother cooks a regular Christmas lunch which we usually eat between 2-3pm and then she just lays out salad things, quiche, cheese, smoked salmon, pickles etc for later on. She also tends to overstock on the sweet stuff. I find that, with those few days without much exercise (gym there is closed Xmas day and Boxing day and I do not run), I really pack on the fluid retention from the increase in carbs.

I did enjoy the food last year, and the year before, but my mind was in a better place then and I was even 16Ibs heavier, but lean. The mind can be a real PITA sometimes. Still, I look forward to being with family and the decorations etc. I just have come to fear eating outside of my regular regime and I am the first to admit, I am hopeless at turning down certain foods I do not usually eat. I have rubbish self control in some areas, and excellent self control in others.

I will take a rum and egg nog about now.....

I logged egg nog in my recipe builder one year, and .... holy cow. I don't remember the number (maybe blocked it out?), but concluded there are other things I like better for the calories. Which kind of touches on OP's question. I'll enjoy myself and savor seeing family and friends I don't often see. I'll eat, drink and be merry, but count it all. If I allow myself a serving of a few of my very favorite things over the course of all the celebrating, it's easier to say no thanks to a lot of the other stuff on offer. I.e save calories for the favorite things and enjoy them.

I was nervous but I then I checked plans, diaries and gym times, and it will only really be 2 days over a couple of weeks where I may not be able to log accurately (will still log) and exercise as much. I can handle that :)
Current plans mean I will be driving on more days as well, which reduces possibility for alcohol intake! Will up my cardio a little bit as well to help maintain, but general goal is just not to gain over the holidays.

Focusing on not letting it spiral into months of - ah well it's new year soon after, and then, ah well it's Easter soon.........logging even when I know I will be over helps with that.

I'm not cooking Thanksgiving so probably I won't like the food as much where we're going!. I'm not worried. I'll eyeball and log. If I go over no big deal. It's one day. They'll be no leftovers since I'm not hosting. Im eating for a week now at only 500 cal deficit (instead of the 1000 I've been doing). I feel great and it's kind of a mini refeed. After Thanksgiving I will move to a 750 deficit. I may be cooking at my mom's for Christmas which means I can control the menu but will have no leftovers. Best if both worlds! I'm missing twi of my most decadent overindulging holiday parties due to work. So that's about 6000 calories I don't have to worry about! I enjoy the parties but can't make it this year. I quit baking Christmas cookies years ago. I would gain 10 lbs.just fron the tasting. They were delicious and people loved them. I was planning to sell them but then decided it wasn't with the weight gain!

I'm worried. I started counting calories last Jan after I realized I had gained so much weight over the holidays last year. Once my sweet tooth gets activated combined with being a social eater...well I'm just hoping I can find some strategies to keep from over indulging and keeping off the weight this year.

Now in saying that I do feel like I have some tools in my pocket this year. One is my scale. If I force myself to look at my weight every day I will have to keep in mind what I'm eating. As well I know now that I feel awful when I stuff myself too full or eat too much junk. I'm actually going to write myself out a holiday game plan. Hope you can find something that works for you!

Last year at this time I weighed about what I do now, maybe a couple of pounds more. I gained 15 over the holidays, caught my breath and then gained 20 more by summer. I have lost 36 and this time I set my ultimate goal to be < 25 BMI and I have another 22 to lose to get there. Last year I thought it was okay to be this heavy; target was a number I came up with and I could change. And I did change it several times. That's why I am using BMI now; I can't change the goal unless I get taller (and at my age, the reverse is happening). This year will be different because I am actively trying to lose, watching/weighing what I eat and logging everything every day. When I hit goal (March or April, I hope), I will keep on logging and weighing often.

I disagree. Once the cold weather hits it's BAKING SEASON, and "a cook must know how things taste."
