What’s your motivation for losing weight?

Health... I said to my husband we are saving for our retirement, we made sure we only took out a 15 year mortgage so that house is paid off before we retire. We are doing everything that we can to set ourselves up to be able to afford to retire and enjoy each other... but we are morbidly obese and will probably die before we even get there so whats the point? Yep that was the day we decided, enough is enough, it was time to completely change our lifestyle... it will be a year to the day on the 28th of this month. We have lost 139lbs combined and are in better shape now at 48 and 51 than when we were in our 30's. Healthy and fit is the new SEXY9

I have been overweight to varying degrees my entire life, and generally that degree was "super morbidly obese."
The biggest motivation to lose weight and get fit is my tiny human. She is 2 now. I have to live the best, healthiest life I can to be here for her as long as possible. I'm already older than most parents of her peers, I don't want to be bigger, slower, and unhealthier as well. My little one copies everything that I do; I'd rather have her copying someone who makes healthier choices and is very active. I absolutely LOVE the fact that active is the norm for her. When she hadn't yet turned 2, she did her first kids 1K fun run. She's done 2 more since turning 2 and rides along in the stroller for our monthly family 5Ks. She rides in the stroller for the "run" portion of my triathlons and gets so excited talking about doing them with me one day too. I do not want Little Bit to have the same health problems that I have had from a lifetime of super morbid obesity. She doesn't know that her Mama was once close to 400 lbs or that I once was at the deepest end of the plus sized stores. I remember though, and that feeling SUCKED. It hurt to be me, it hurt to get out of bed, it hurt to move. These days I not only keep up with Little Bit, I lead by example.
I'm not gonna lie, fitting into size 8s and 6s feels pretty dang good too. I've gone from avoiding the doctor at all costs unless I thought I was dying to being willing to share my weight with the world. I like inspiring my friends and family because I want them to be around longer too. Life is a whole lot easier, and a whole lot better in the 145-150 range than it was at 387.10 -
My beach wedding is in May! I'd like to get to my goal weight (20lbs away) this winter so I can order my dress in the right size.3

Share your inspiration!
I thought it was about time for an update. I am now FOUR POUNDS from my goal! looks like I’m going to be fitting into that dress soon!

My father died at the age of 71 after 12 years on dialysis. It was a slow painful process for him, my mother and myself(i am sure for my brother too, but he did not live in the same town, so he did not see the progression as firsthand as I did). Amputations started at the foot; first a couple of toes, then half a foot, and so on.. He ended with double mid thigh amputations. he was the toughest man I have ever known, but he did nothing to help himself in reguards to his health. He passed 8 years ago this coming January. I will not go out that way. That is my motivation. Would love to make some new friends! Best of luck to everyone on their journey.6

Hello All...great thread. My motivation is two-fold: health and retirement. I turned 46 yesterday and I am targeting an early retirement at age 55 and I not only want to be here for that but be really active. In the last year I made some great strides: Quit smoking and lost 15-20 lbs depending on scale, however most of that weight loss occurred in the first few months. I am an avid cyclist but I wonder how much better I could do without these extra lbs. I am a realist and not too concerned with getting down to ideal BMI stats ( which are misleading) but would love to get down another 20 and be about 180. I am tired of starting and not maintaining so I am really motivated. Thank you all for sharing and all the best to you on your journey.3

I was outgrowing the plus-size catalog sizes. I have been purchasing from them for 20+ years when they used to come in the mail and you would call them and order by phone. If they were too small, how would I look professional at work?
Husby and I want to travel extensively. I can't see new places from a park bench. It was just time.
Down almost 100#, log daily, never dreamed my daily step count would be so high. Life is good.6 -

I don't want to be dependent on others in my old age because I refused to take responsibility for my own CICO.1 -
Because I'm fat and I hate how I look.1

I'm 5'6 and almost 30. I would really love to be a healthier version of me. I really hate looking at pictures of myself and want to wear all of the cute clothes that I see.1

My PCP wants to place me on Metforman for a high HgbA1C. I made a deal with her that if I could improve my labs through weight loss and diet, need to get to a HGBA1C less than 6, I can avoid going on meds. We are checking labs on 12/31 and 3/31. Its nice to have a PCP willing to work on a plan with me.3

My motivation is...the simple fact that I've gained 40 of the 55 lbs I've lost 2 years ago. I want to get back to where I was. Fit into cutesy clothing and wear crop tops and tight little dresses while I'm still in my 20s and it's still appropriate. I ordered a beautiful satin romper a few weeks ago and when I received it , it was tight. I'm hoping to fit into it for the work Christmas party next month. My boyfriend and I are going on a trip to Paris with his family in march, that's around the time when I'd like to have lost all the weight I've gained back. *sigh* Today is like my 7215th day one back on MFP, so we shall see.1

I have been overweight since I was a child. For some reason I always put everyone else's needs before my own. My motivation is for myself, to become healthier and stronger but it's also for my kids because they are young. I want to be able to play with them without becoming tired easily.2

I'm 35, which is not old yet, but not really young either. Things hurt a little more than they used to and I recover more slowly. It becomes very clear that I need to start making habits now that keep me healthy when I'm old.
I like exercise. I like to run and to lift weights. When I carry a bit too much weight, running is less comfortable and I have less range of motion--this interferes with squatting and deadlifts.
I guess I'm saying that I'm the oddball who wants to lose weight so I can exercise (more comfortably).1 -
My motivation is that once I get started I can see the improvement in everything from the roundness of my face to the reduction of my butt. It makes me feel good to look better. Even a few pounds has already made the difference.
Plus, it's the knowledge that what used to be my "fat" number is now my "skinny" number. lol1
