Complete waste of calories

I'm going to assume other people have experienced this but the feeling when you make yourself something - or grab something to go - and you're eating it and it just does not fufill the expectations of the meal? I find that moment to be almost infuriating. I have literally thrown away food after two or three bites because it is ... well. gross... which is not something I would have done six months ago. Pizza for instance - pizza is my achilles heel. Before my overhaul, I would not have walked away from a slice of pizza, regardless of how not awesome it was. Now? No question. Is this gross? Then I'm not eating it.
I was talking about this feeling recently with a friend, how something so disappointing was a complete waste of calories because I only get so many a day, so I'm not going to waste them on something that doesn't cut it. It's pretty much a budget.
Which goes in line with the other part of my mental overhaul on food: food is 10% entertainment (holidays, parties, going out with friends) and 90% energy source.
Anyway. Today it was the salad. Some kind of chipolte ranch dressing, cheese, and the whole thing tasted like plastic. four bites in and tossed in favor of pinapple. I love salad. I was trying this new brand of prepped salad because I didn't have a chance to make my meals today. Never again.
What have you felt like was a waste of calories?

Nuts - love them but hate how many calories for such small amount, only once did I eat first and logged after!
Mad for pizza but shop/takeaway are too greasy now so do homemade.7 -
i have a friend who makes cauliflower pizza and i found myself liking that! It's not the same, but it didn't suck.
i seriously love homemade pizza. my favorite is with goat cheese and papadew topping. mmmmm.3 -
Two years of maintainence--130lbs lost Look up this thread by Shannon of Mpls. It's a great thread and she says exactly what you're saying. She only eats quality food now.11

So many things: Almost any standard commercial packaged baked goods. Potato chips, except possibly the ones the bar makes fresh onsite. Most white or near-white bread or sandwich rolls.
The funny part is, I'm enjoying my overall way of eating so much more since I've focused on foods I actively like . . . eating less, enjoying it more.23 -
If I end up buying something and not liking it, 99% of the time I finish it, then not buy it in the future ... I hate to waste food. That 1% I do throw out has to be completely inedible or toxic, not just a non preferential experience.8

Candy is a waste of calories for me. I'm not the biggest fan so hate spending calories on food I don't really enjoy. If I'm going to spend calories on sweet goods, it's going to be baked goods.
Pizza isn't a waste of calories for me because I still love it. I just choose not to eat it because the calorie load vs. amount required to satisfy me doesn't work out. Getting a pizza and only being allowed to have one slice is sad. I'd rather skip it altogether.9 -
Goddamn Tim Horton's muffins. Those things are 400+ calories each and don't even taste that good! Whenever someone brings them into the office I have to remind myself that they're totally not worth it.
Pizza is worth it for me. I live in an Italian city and our pizza is delicious. Totally worth the splurge once and a while!16 -
Cough drops are a waste of calories!!11

Pretty much any commercially baked good including the stuff that comes from the grocery store bakery...but I've always thought that stuff was sub par to the point of not wanting to eat it. The only exception I can think of are those mini "fake" doughnuts...for whatever reason I like those...always take them camping.
I'm pretty much a self admitted food snob and have been since I can remember...I've always avoided sub par food.11 -
I'm a real pizza snob now. And if a burger doesn't bring me total joy I don't want to have anything to do with it.8

No, I do not think any food is a waste of calories. I believe everything in moderation. If you really want something, it is better to fulfill that craving, or you are going to try to fill it with a ton of other stuff and ate more calories than you would have in the first place.11

So many things - 90% of fast food (hey, I have to keep 10% for Jersey Mike's, Chipotle, and a Five Guys burger sans bun). Sugary drinks are a close second. Things that ARE worth the stupid insane calories - frozen snickers, salt and vinegar chips, and carrot cake. haha10

I do remember during past diets that I discovered I didn't like things I would normally have eaten without thinking too much about it. The only thing I remember is potato chips. I still don't eat them. Every once in awhile someone will bring a bag into the house and I'll taste one just to verify that I still don't like them. Same with cigarettes come to think of it; I don't even need a puff to verify anymore. Why did I ever smoke? Those things are nasty!
Sometimes taste buds change what they like with no apparent reason. I used to love, now hate brussels sprouts, asparagus, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon.

There have been several things for me, for months I have been on a very restricted diet due to gallstones, I had my op 3 weeks ago and for 2 weeks now I have been trying in small amounts or on cheat days foods I have craved or really wanted to try but could not eat and a lot have been very disappointing, most I finished but won't get again but 1 thing I did throw away were these cheese topped flat bread bite type things bit like crackers, for months I was eyeing them up at my local supermarket as they were situated at the tills, I finally got them and was so excited and I ate 2, gagged and threw them out, they had a vomit after taste and tasted greasy and nasty I was so disappointed, also nuts, I got some and the calories are insane just for a tiny amount took me all week just to finish a tiny bag and not very satisfying so now I just steal 1 or 2 off the fella haha, its strange the things I would have just shovelled down without thinking before now I am quite fussy if its too high in calories I will either not have it or wait till cheat day hehe and yes candy don't get me started, I like to suck on a mint humbug or another minty candy to help with curbing my eating sometimes and 8 humbugs are like 200 calories I was like whaaaat? the other day I must of had about 4 and didn't think to log as those 4 were throughout the day so annoying.0
-
Haha I know this feeling well if it tastes bad you should get your calories back I reckon.13
-
A while back I renamed two of my meals "ok but it was worth it" - where I log stuff that's high in calories but I like it, and another one "wish I hadn't" for the type of stuff you describe. The "wish I hadn't" one has taught me to sometimes pitch things, like you describe. and other times to check in advance what the nutrition info is, especially in restaurants. I don't often need to log things there anymore!4

That's not what she's saying. She's talking about eating something you expect to be delicious and then it's not. About how now she prefers to not waste her calories on something that isn't amazing.24 -
nuts and soda always leave me feeling disappointed. The servings depress me too. The biggest waste of calories I've had was on an awful greasy sandwich I ordered at a cajun restaurant. I asked the waitress if it was a 'dry rub' seasoning and if there was anything really oily on the sandwich, to which she said "nope! Just dry seasonings and peppers!" When I got it the peppers weren't whole peppers they were finely chopped into a pesto thing with tons of oil. I was with out my mother so I wanted to be polite and I finished it anyway, but oh my goodness. I felt so sick afterwards because I haven't eaten that kind of thing in forever. It didn't taste that great too.2

A terrible tasting burger from a restaurant. If I planned for that burger, I want that thing to taste like heaven. I've had times where it just doesn't own up to the expectation and I leave with the attitude that I could have lived without it. One example of this is a 5 guys burger. It was so not worth the hype.4

Ya. That's not what the OP was asking. Geeze. You people and your everything in moderation posts. Leave that to the OP's who actually ask for that information.
The OP fulfilled her craving by getting a pre-made salad that she wanted. BUT only threw it out because it was nasty and a waste of calories. Why waste calories on something she didn't like. That's what she was getting at.22 -
Fudge from Fresh Market deli. I am diabetic so I have to count carbs as well as calories and it's a rare treat when I have something like this, but my husband was eating it, it looked delicious, and I decided that since I had the calories to spare and it was a good blood sugar control day for me I would go ahead. Not as delicious as it looked, so sweet as to be nasty and little if any chocolate flavor. Plus it spiked my glucose more than it should have, so I think the portions are underestimated on the package (didn't weigh, my fault really, but my guess would have been that a single piece was twice the weight they claimed, and my bg test was consistent with my guess).
Not going to do that again!1 -
I pretty much stopped eating saltine crackers. I ate whole sleeves of crackers before. Now I don't buy them because I'd rather use those calories on tastier or more nutritious foods.6
-
I totally get this. I bought a cheese scone for lunch earlier this week, but when I tasted it at my desk a few hours later, it was fairly flavourless. However, as I had nothing else to eat, I finished it, then spent the rest of the day being mad at the cafe for making me waste 400 calories on something I didn't enjoy.10
-
I bought a fancy coffee drink.
It was awful.
I tossed it after two sips.
I thought to myself "Well, clearly, I've already wasted my money, now I'm just wasting my calories"
I figured tossing it was cutting my losses.26 -

I think breaking bread with people you care about isn't just entertainment, it's essential to being human and we've been sharing meals together for many thousands of years - millions, if you include our hominid ancestors.
Waste of calories? Yeah, eating fat free ice cream - including Halo. Or the cookies with phony chocolate icing that has no taste and a texture like candle wax.12 -

With cheese or a snack, my favorite has become Ak-Mak (Armenian) sesame crackers; serving of 5 has 110 cals, 2g fat, 4g fiber and 5g protein (they're big crackers, by the way: each is maybe 1 by 3.5 inches).2 -
A lot of stuff, my diet is pretty different than before. Mostly it's baked goods made with shortening when it would be butter if homemade, what's the point of it lasting long on the shelf if it tastes bland?2
-
Most pizza just isn't worth the calories. I love a good pizza, but that's never what I wind up with. And I don't want to take on the calories from a mediocre one.4

I like the WASA crackers ... the Thins have 80 calories and 8 grams of whole grains per servings and taste great with thin slices of avocado on them. The Light Rye are also thin and crisp with 60 calories for 2 but only 3 grams of fiber ... they make a great snack with a slice of turkey or ham or a dollop of tuna or egg salad on them.
PS ... and for me, cheese goes with slices of apple or pears!0 -
45 calorie bread. Yeah, it’s less calories....but it’s less everything else too. I’ll just eat one slice of really good wheat or Italian now. *shudders* gah it’s so bad.4
