BMR question

So the BMR is supposed to be the calories the body needs to sustain simple life functions properly daily right ?

YOUR BASAL METABOLIC RATE (BMR):
2012 Calories
YOUR DAILY CALORIE NEEDS TO
MAINTAIN CURRENT WEIGHT:
2414 Calories

For a 30 yr old Male 5'11 weighing 200 pounds.

So my question is if I need to reach 2000 calories per day and I struggle to get to that now simply because of money, I just dont have the money to buy 2000 calories per day worth of food I guess but if this is the case then using the sites tools if I work out it subtracts calories from my daily intake numbers during the day.

So am I literally only able to diet at the moment because working out would burn more calories and force me to take in more than 2000 calories a day which im already having trouble reaching without even working out ?

Then by this math does that mean i've got to eat 1000 calories more than my BMR if I plan on working out to a degree that would burn 1000 calories ?

To me this doesnt make sense at all.

Im sure am misunderstanding things somewhere.

Also if this is the case how is that people go on fasts for days and sometimes weeks at a time without dying ? They surely are not meeting the Daily BMR's of Calories needed to sustain life functions as science claims.

Because when you eat less than you need, your body can use stored energy to sustain life until you begin eating again. Your body breaks down fat and muscle to ensure you have sufficient energy. This is how people are able to fast.

When you set up your MFP profile, you chose to either maintain or to lose/gain .5, 1, 1.5, or 2 pounds per week (or the equivalent in kg.) The number MFP gave you allows you to hit that goal without any exercise added. Exercise is fantastic for your health and physique but when you use MFP's goal, you can eat just it and lose weight (i.e., no need to burn off more calories with exercise.) In fact, when you do burn more calories through exercise, you are supposed to eat them.

As for not being able to afford to eat 2000 calories, if you are currently overweight, you've been eating at least 2414 (your maintenance) calories up to this point. Eating less than that should save you money unless you are changing what you eat and eating more expensive food now. Have you made changes to what you are eating, and not just how much you are eating?

You won't die after one day or even a couple of weeks without eating - you have fat stores. But it's not fun, nor pleasant, and not healthy. People don't do it for fun - but for religious purposes, hunger strikes, eating disorders, or just not having food. You have to have enough food. You have to prioritize better and/or find a food bank or other kinds of support. You can't go on dieting forever just to save money.

But yes, if you burn more energy through exercise, you have to replace those calories.

To be fair, there are types of intermittent fasting where you spend 2 days a week fasting (or eating very low calorie) with the remaining days eating at maintenance.

I personally tried a 3-day fast just for fun, just to see if I could. It actually wasn't that bad. It's not something I'd regularly do, though. It did mentally prepare me for later when I needed to fast in prep for my colonoscopy.

    simplified:

If you eat 2,000 calories, but your maintence is 2500, you will lose about a lb/week, if you workout and burn say 250 cals/day, you are now in a deficit of 750/day, so you could expect to lose 1.5 lbs/week.

If you want to maintain you would have to eat 2500 on days you don't exercise and 2750 on days you do... and even more if you want to gain

when you mention not having money to eat 2000cal a day - can you explain? i can get over 2500cal a day on about $7 a day and that includes buying yogurt daily

That's what I was wondering. High calorie foods are usually the cheapest

ditto. It might be hard getting optimum grams of protein or a more varied diet on absolutely minimal funds, but carbs & fat are cheap AF. (Rice & beans are always an option. Potatoes. Eggs. Even a $2 box of Debbie snacks will probably get you a few thousand calories).

Awesome info everyone thanks for the tips and tricks and advice.

As for the money and calories Im a Veteran on disability not working. I used foodstamps and it isnt more than $120 a month. Ive done the food bank thing, honestly id rather starve to death. Cheap foods ? Again sorry call me stupid or pig headed whatever, I wont go spend money on cheap crap I need to then go prepare and finally eat. If its going to be cheap its going to be fast and made by someone else lol. Just me.

Yeah I thought it was all theoretical with the BMR thing. Ive done fasting before 1 day a week and even a few days to see what it was like but no more than 3.

Im just gonna work out and eat as healthy as I can 3 times a day and record the portions and go from there.

Lately I was on a sushi kick so thats why this months been crappy lol. Normally though I make the money work but yeah that $7 a day at 30 days is $210 and $80 more a month I spend on food but im sure you feel better than I do sometimes @deannalfisher

I've got rice just hanging out down there and some flour tortillas with loads of condiments ( fight club ring any bells? lol )

Im looking into Huel honestly. I wish we had those little green balls from Enemy Mine honestly that would be awesome, just pop 1 3 times a day and your golden lol save up time to go do more important things.

If you're spending $130 a month on food, you can manage to get 2,000 calories a day (assuming you're in the US). Now maybe not if you expect someone else to do all the preparation, but adults look at their situation and their goals and figure out ways to meet their goals while they're in a specific situation.

I'm not sure how you're regularly eating sushi for $130 a month, but if you can find a way to swing that, you can probably also figure out how to get 2,000 calories a day.

Oh yeah of course lol I meant I was trying to make homemade sushi and just failed so yeah. I do love to cook though and do have a slow cooker ill be using this winter. I tend to stick to meats like chicken breast and thighs or steaks. Simple stuff like grilled cheese and tomato soups been my favorite lately. I guess what im trying to say is it feels like after budgeting the money on food the cheaper stuffs just not as healthy and I guess thats what I need to change more the actual products Im buying. I tend to try and stay organic and I know thats more expensive. I only drink water and rarely milk. Nothing else honestly.

Ill throw anything assortment of veggies and meat in a pan and fry it up and toss it in a wrap and slap some sauce on it and be happier than a big in $%^& honestly lol.

Just working out has me thinking like damn if I go hard im gonna end up losing more Calories a day I take in and that cant be good.

Though I guess its taking it from the stored calories first rather than the incoming calories of the day. Kinda getting a better sense of this.

Didnt matter much when I was running 7 miles every morning than going about the rest of the days training in the infantry.

Strip club till 2am drunk as a skunk every night was normal lol.

Guess im paying for it now ;) lol

I think if you're trying to stay within a budget, buying organic is not a great idea. You'd be much better off eating a variety of non-organic foods and meeting your nutritional needs than you would be eating less food than you need because you're trying to get organic stuff.

Yeah I agree Im going to probably go with Huel at 1000k cal per day giving me 50% of the vitamins and 106% of protein daily values recommended. Then I can fill the other 1000 calories with whatever then and supplement with the jym line stuff I want to get again.

After all the helpful things posted in this thread and you are going to buy this expensive Huel meal replacements, and JYM supplements, etc.

You said you spent $130 a month on food above. Now you're going to spend about $130 on Huel (and that's before shipping costs) AND buy more food on top of that. Honestly, it doesn't seem like you're approaching this seriously. Why even start this thread?
