Why am I gaining weight?

I am very confused about the changes occurring to my body since making some lifestyle changes. For the last six months, I was maintaining my weight (approximately 58-59kg- bmi 20.5) while doing sporadic and limited exercise although I was tracking my calorie intake on here (2300-2500 per day- I have very high energy needs). Over the last month, since I have been on uni break I have started a new exercise program which sees me doing 3 x strength and resistance classes per week, 3 x swims per week plus a couple of walks. I have continued tracking my intake and it has stayed at the exact same level- the only difference is I am going for more healthier options to make up my calorie levels. However, two weeks ago, my weight came up as 60.3 kg. Thinking that this might just be fluid, I carried on but upon being weighed this morning I was shocked to discover that my weight has jumped to 61.4 kg. I honestly do not know what could have possibly caused this- I always have been very careful with tracking so it is not a case of eating a lot of extra calories. My goal is not weight loss and I am feeling a lot more energised and stronger since making these changes so I know that the number shouldn't bother me but I am just extremely confused as to why this would be happening. Is it possible it is still fluid changes due to exercise?

It could be muscle gain! Muscle weighs more than fat, so if you're doing a lot of muscle building, you'd see it in the scale. Have you been measuring yourself? That's a more effective way to see progress for those actively building muscle. Hopefully someone who's got more experience with this will chime in to help you!

During your uni break you undertook significantly more exercise. This includes strength and resistance classes, which is causing muscle damage and recruiting water to persist while your muscles repair. If you are consuming plenteous protein and calories, you may slowly be adding muscle. However, any time you are confident of your food tracking and don't know why an extra 3 kg are aboard, it's water.
