Frustrated after business trip...

I think my metabolism sucks.
Sorry and to the point. Went on a 9 day business trip to Europe. I expected to gain a couple lbs because of the fantastic, traditional culinary foods - and knowing my options wouldn't be my usual. Nevertheless, I traveled with a colleague who was also using another diet app Loseit. I left home weighing in at 215.0... came home at 220... Okay, I did expect to gain, but that seemed more than I expected in just 9 days...
So checking in with my colleague, he also gained.. But he gained .2 That's POINT 2 OF A POUND!
How can that be? We ate mostly the same things, we walked over 20,000 steps on many days. Of course I indulged in some of the best, most delicious European foods I've ever had, and I expected to gain a few and was good with that, but now I'm up 7 lb in 10 days. That seems like a lot. Btw, he doesn't have much to lose if anything... He's thin by most standards..
Since I've been home I thought that it might disappear quickly once I got back in my weight loss routine. I've been snowshoeing, shoveling snow, active outside but my new 7lb seems to have found a home.
I'm sure everyone deals with this anchor system that or bodies have, but how can I kick start my metabolism? Next week due to several holiday functions will be another week of indulging a little., I realize that I may not be able to lose..., but if I can just be in maintenance mode, if be happy. I just do not want to gain.
By the way, I only went over maintenance caloric intake a couple times. The rest of my days would be considered "maintenance mode"... But like I said, my waking steps were up big time.

Your metabolism is fine.
Everyone's bodies react different to sodium and carbs and have different amounts of water rentention14 -
To add to what Kriss said...everyone’s body reacts differently to air travel as well - and if your body isn’t used to all the activity (walking shoveling, etc), you could be holding water weight from that, too.
Think logically - an extra 7 lbs is 24,500 extra calories over Maintenance. Sounds like you were logging and possibly even comparing notes on what you were eating to create a more accurate account of your food intake. I doubt you ate 2,450 calories over Maintenance every day for 10 days. Just give it time - this is not fat gain.
P.S. Comparison to others robs yourself of joy. Don’t use your coworker as a benchmark. His life, goals, and activities are different than yours. Run your own race and be happy that you are on a healthy path. Good luck on your journey.18 -

How long since you've been back? Was the amount of walking unusual for you? Is the amount of activity since you've been back unusual for you? As above, did you fly? All of these things can cause water retention.2

2450 extra calories over maintenance is a pretty easy number to hit. Given the right foods, it's not hard to hit a pretty high calorie number in a few meals.10 -
Well, you probably didn't get that much FAT as others have said. However, unless you were preparing the foods yourself, your tracking could be way off. Particularly when it comes to restaurant food--depending on how much butter, oil is used in preparing, plus how big is the portion, etc. If you ate any baked goods, that could be a lot of calories there. Plus the drinking, did you log wine or cocktails? Olives, nuts, and cheeses (typically served with the drinks) also contain a lot of calories. Very easy to eat 500-700 calories just in those snacks before dinner.0

Something I've noticed between logging on Lose It and here... I have logged the same exact foods in the same exact amounts and come out with different calorie counts. It's not very reliable to compare one calorie counter to another, especially when one uses a lot of crowd sourced data. I'm not sure how many verified vs. crowd sourced entries Lose It uses, but this could explain a difference in calorie counts.0

i gained 15 pounds in 1 day vacation. hah. Was so yummy, And gone all but 2 pounds a week later0

Well, in theory, 2450 calories per day over maintenance for 10 days is not impossible but it's highly unlikely. It's also doubtful since, in the OP's own words, he didn't go above maintenance except for a couple of times.
OP, I'd suggest for you to stay on course and not change anything if your usual weight loss routine was working previously. Remember, long term is the aim here.

I gained 6 lbs on a trip to Europe and it disappeared at the rate of 1 lb per day over the next week. Water weight from flying..0

But for a typical business traveler who doesn't have BED?
Just because it's doable and has been done by people who who are full out scarfing or bingeing food doesn't mean that it's the likely explanation for someone who gained less than 3 percent of his baseline weight after international travel.2 -
People don't have to have an eating disorder to hit that many calories. Anybody could do it. Eat out for your three meals then go out and have some drinks. It's not at all *impossible*

Eating that many calories per day is not impossible, in fact, it would be easy to do. It is the conversion of those extra calories to stored fat that would be highly unlikely, and probably not possible for a 215 pound person to do in 10 days. Our bodies are simply not that efficient.4 -

Gaining that much weight in an allotted time frame is less likely. Just like eating 3500 calories above maintenance today does not mean you will weigh one pound heavier tomorrow.
But eating that many calories isn't hard. Especially for people who travel. There is over 1600 calories in a piece of Sheppards pie at the cheese cake factory. 1500 calories for a burger and fries at dennys and pretty easy to clock in close to 1000 calories for breakfast at a restaurant too if you're not paying attention at all.. throw in a few drinks at the end of the night and you've got a 4000 calorie day pretty much.
All it takes is just pointing at a menu and ordering and eating to hit a crazy calorie goal. You don't need an eating disorder for that.5 -
The dry, low pressure air tends to make people feel more thirsty than they would in a similar situation at ground level, like taking a bus, even for a few hours after the flight. So they drink more water.0 -
How long since you got back from your trip? it takes me around 2 weeks to see my usual scale number after a trip away. Those first days back can see a 'gain' of up to 7lbs. The first week back I drop a lot of water weight and then after that any 'fat' gain eventually goes as I resume normal eating.0

Comparison is the thief of joy - don't concern yourself with how your coworker's body works. Everybody's different.
5lbs up for a 9 day trip doesn't seem that bad to me. At least half of it will be water weight, and gaining a pound or two during vacation isn't the end of the world.
Just get back on the horse, track your calories accurately and stick to a reasonable deficit. Those extra pounds will be gone before you know it.

My family did an All Inclusive, 7 day trip to Cancun. So, basically eat/drink whenever and whatever.
We all weighed respectively before we left. I didn't log/weigh food all week, and did a 2-3mile beach walk every day (other than that it was booze, beach chair and books for me). I maintained to the ounce. Seriously, I have no idea how. But obviously everything cancelled out.
My Dad gained 5lbs (but normally he's super active, and wasn't this trip).
My Mom gained 3lbs.
My BF gained 1lb.
We all handle traveling differently. I'm assuming some of my Dad's 5lbs was water retention from the flight, but I think it was also because he wasn't outside all day chopping down trees or mowing grass (he's a retired 65 year old guy who really hates sitting around). I'm assuming my Mom over ate because she wasn't watching and gets more activity at home as well. I'm pretty sure my BF gained only water weight.
We got back on Nov. 18th. I'm currently down 2lbs since then. And everyone who has gained is back to "pre-vacation" weight. Took my Mom the longest to lose what she gained.
I'm sure you'll be back to normal in no time.3 -
Google airplane travel weight gain. It’s a common occurrence on Long flights, essentially dehydration and water retention. Short commutes (under 2 hours) don't affect me.0 -
