I'm not going to meet my New Year's goal, and that's okay

Based on my rate of loss through the first part of the year, I set a "stretch goal" to be out of the obese BMI by the end of 2017. Well, we've got 13 days left and it's not looking likely I'm afraid, but that's okay! I needed to hit 164 to be considered overweight and my most recent low is 168.2. I suppose a whoosh is possible, but I'm not holding my breath. So what I'm doing instead of feeling bad about that is celebrating what I did accomplish this year.
Since I started losing weight in January, I've lost 40 pounds, almost 20% of my starting body-weight of 208 lbs. I've gone from size 18 jeans to size 14. I've lost at least three pounds every month since June, and feel pretty good about keeping that up next year (excepting a planned diet break for my birthday in March, which is going to involve So. Much. Sushi.).
I started running and actually enjoy it! I started body-weight exercises and enjoy that too! I've graduated from wall push-ups to stair push-ups, and can do both squats and lunges without support to keep my balance. I own three pairs of shoes for different kinds of exercise! And I've really enjoyed becoming a part of this community so that I don't have to bore my friends and family with constant weight and fitness talk.
Happy early New Year, everybody! Even if you haven't hit a goal or two, I bet you've done something worth celebrating.

I won’t be hitting my goal by the date I set either. I’m at a healthy BMI now but I wanted to get my body fat percentage to a specific range by my birthday (January 5th). I’m still approximately 5% above that range and it’s ok. I’m still working towards that goal just without a specific time frame anymore.
Your attitude is great! I have no doubts you will reach all of your goals18 -
Such a positive thread. I am trying to learn that I can’t control the number on the scale, only the nutrition I choose to take in to benefit my body.11

Nor I. I'm working on my 2nd consecutive day of staying within my calorie budget, which hasn't happened in a month. My skinny 32" pants don't fit. I did a good cardio session today, which has been too rare the past couple of months. But hey, I'm here on December 18 slogging along. That's a success. I shall never surrender!22

I love your attitude @MegaMooseEsq. It will see you through the rest of your weight loss and make moving into maintenance less stressful.
Flexibility is an important key in the success toolbox.

Definately wont be hitting my goal before the year's out but I've hit so many smaller ones along the way and they in themselves, although only minor, have given me a tremendous sense of achievement! I'm pumped for the new year and an even better me! Good luck all

I'm 1.5lbs away from my mini end of year goal. I'm planning on maintaining from next week to the end of the year so I think the 1.5lbs will have to wait until January but that's ok! This is the first year I have ever lost weight on the run up to Christmas and I'm proud of that :-)10 -
I started on September first and set a target of 80 kilos.
At that point i was 101.4kg. Im now weighing in at 82.4kg and wont hit the 80kg mark by xmas.
However i was delighted to find that ive just managed to creep into the upper end of the healthy category.
Ill be taking an xmas break - but restarting int he new year with a new target for next year.8 -

Im ahead of my intended goal at this time so to say im overjoyed, however i will get xmas over with and then head down and try and get under my next target which will see me at my lowest ever adult weight ive measured.im 12 st 8 and my aim is 12st by march 1st.ive never weighed under 12st 6lbs ever.

What tremendous accomplishments! There are many ways to measure our goals; a certain number of pounds by a certain date is just one of them. Not to mention that you are extremely close to that goal too! I love looking at the big picture of all the ways you've improved your health and changes you've made. Fantastic work!2

Great attitude! I won't be hitting my weight goal either, in fact Libra says I never will. Ha! Anyway what I have done is stop my gain and lose a few lbs. And if anything, I've proven to myself that I'm capable of maintenance within a few lb range. I'll take it.5

I hadn't set myself any time goals, but I sort of just expected to be at my goal weight by Christmas. I'm not, but the experience of having a deliberate diet break was more valuable to me than pushing on to goal. Deliberately slowing things down has changed my perspective.7 -

Thank you! I love hearing about everyone’s accomplishments, big and small. I realized early in this process how important attitude was - I gained most of this weight because I was so focused on starting my career that I let everything else fall to the wayside. I can deal with that after I get a job, was my attitude. Or, if no one wants to hire me, that means I’m a failure so why take care of myself? Then I looked up and it was 2017 and not only did I not have the career I wanted, I was also crazy overweight and drinking way too much. So I decided it was time to woman up and take control of the things I could control. Almost a year later and I’m still working on that career, but I haven’t been resting on my laurels either, and that feels good.
Also I have a job interview today and needed to put some positivity out into the universe.22 -
I won't hit my target bf%/weight either but it's all good. I know I'll hit my goal eventually. By the looks of things it'll be mid to Febending ending. Nothing changes for me, I'll carry on racking up successful days.5

I won't hit my goal either. I'm five pounds off. But that's okay. For the first time in forever I'm actually happy with the way my body looks.

Personally, it's not just that I won't not hit my goals for the year... I'll be damned close to being the exact same weight as I was at the beginning of the year. I've regained some weight from my new low this summer after a particularly nasty bronchitis that was messing me. It's one year. One number. I'm giving myself the rest of the year at maintenance and will tackle the next lot of weight to lose next year :-)7 -
Like @ladyreva78, I'm going to be close to the exact same weight I was January 1. But, I'm down two pants sizes and broke a state deadlifting record! Who cares what the scale says, huh?23

Add me to the list of those not hitting their goal, but being happy what they've done. In Jan I wanted to be 200 by the end of 2017 and wanted to be 220 by the end of June 2017. Missed June by 10 lbs and looks like those same 10 are going to be my issue by the end. I'll end the year close to 210 (213.3 this morning) but Jan 1 2017 the scale read 276.5, so ~ 60 lbs gone including July and August not dieting. Plus I've become a runner (have the black toe to prove it) and been at the gym 4 days a week on average since August.

The way I look at goals is:
all arbitary or intermediate goals are moveable
For example, I've set a goal to drop 50lb by 1st April from a certain date a little while ago. If I get to 30 March and I've only lost 30lbs I won't be beating myself up. I'll just set a new goal.
My ultimate target is to drop 73lb from current weight. I'll get there. Goal setting is an important tool in helping to stay on track not a stick to beat myself with7 -

Yes, and they can be incredibly nerve wracking. I was lucky on my last interview in that I didn't need the job, it was an alteration in my career path, so I was fairly relaxed. It makes a big difference.
It must be frustrating to work so hard towards something and feel like you're spinning your wheels. You've demonstrated commitment this year, so hopefully some of that confidence came across today. Let us know how it went! In your field, does it take weeks to find out?3 -

Oh yeah, and the nerves aren't helped the longer I remain underemployed, because there's no such thing as a job I don't desperately want. It'll be after the new year for sure before I heard anything from this one, but thankfully the places I've been interviewing (state agencies mostly) are usually pretty good at getting back to you promptly.4 -
Hey, I'm in the same boat. I started this year at 257. At some point, I decided I'd like to end it at 170. I'm currently 174, so I don't think it's going to happen, but like you... I'm ok with it. You did great this year!10

Here, if they contact your references it's a good sign. If you don't get the position, you won't hear anything at all.

My goal when I started (again) on October 18 was to just see where I could get. Ten pounds/month would be amazing and would have me reaching my long-term goal in a bit over a year. 2 months later I'm closer to the 30 pounds gone than the 20 and I'm even learning I like a more vegetarian diet sometimes (never dreamed I'd say that)! Excited to see what the new year holds for me. Hopefully getting back to dance which I miss so much...my self-consciousness just hasn't let me step into the studio!6
