IMHO, if there is a good deal of fat left, you would be able to pinch it and still have a good inch or so... but if it's mostly just skin and a little fat then there will be much less to pinch, and it would pull away from the body. for example, my lower abs are very lean and just have skin while the upper abs (around the middle) have skin but also a good deal of fat to get rid of.

Try pinching your skin together in the area where you're not sure. If you can pinch the two sides pretty close together and you don't feel much fat in between, it's likely loose skin. BUT, if you're "pinching an inch," as my Granny used to say, that's likely fat instead of loose skin.

Also, it does look different, more like a deflated balloon.

just loose skin has very little thickness to it, loose skin that you can pinch that is still thicker than a say a pinch of a new fluffy towel still has fat attached...that was the way it was explained to my friend who I accompanied when she enquired about a tummy tuck. Loose skin is also very crepey (however you spell it!)

Fat fills the skin. It does not stretch. Yes, everything will head south. Remember fat cells divide and multiply as we gain weight. The problem is--fat cells only deflate instead of burning off completely. That means you will still be able to "pinch an inch" when the fat cells are deflated. The difference is when you pinch fat you can't quite move it about to get fingers closer--if the cells are deflated, you can manipulate it a bit more. Remember, the peniculus, (aka belly pooch) will hang lower as it deflates. It will sort of fold over. If you have a larger amount of fat in the belly and peniculus areas, the stretched skin will hang in such a way it can create sores. If so, this is the time to see a plastic surgeon. It has become a medical need to remove the excess skin.
