I discovered that many of my friends on MSP have a very very low calorie count kind of makes me jealous. I can eat up to 1800 calories per day but some people only 1200. That's amazing

You are jealous that they only get to eat 1200 calories while you can eat 1800? Why?9

It's tough when your TDEE is only 1700-1800 (like me). Seeing any progress at all means tracking meticulously and managing a decent deficit. I aim for 1200-1400 a day. I wish I could eat 1800 and lose weight!5

The minimum for men is 1500 calories. Women can go down to 1200. But why the jealousy? A wise rabbit once said the winner is the one who eats the most and still loses.10

Something does add up. You are a guy. You don't say how much you have to lose or what your current weight or height is. I am 5'9" and I lose at 2000 to 2200 per day. How much are you trying to lose per week?1 -
I'm in that 1200ish boat. Only 5'3 with 40 pounds to lose set a 1 lb per week. It's a struggle some days.
I always take peeks at diaries, mostly for inspiration, and sadly some of the newbies on my friend list are eating far under what they should be, the worst being one young lady netting between 300 - 600 daily. That wouldn't get me past lunch!3 -
i once had someone unfriend me because they were jealous of how much i could eat and lose weight...9

I would feel sad for anyone who had to eat 1200 calories to lose.4

Again... I made a typo. I wish I could correct the topic. Lol. I'm not jealous I just feel kind of bad for someone who can only eat 1200 calories. I need to lose about a hundred pounds. I'm 5-9 270 lb. I have mfp set to lose one pound per week. Basically my point is I'm not sure how someone could only eat 1200 calories per day.....3

I am on maintenance now but I really admire the willpower some people have to only eat 1200-1500. I see a lot of people maintaining on only 1500. I could NEVER! I eat about 2100-2600 and never below 2100. Usually end up in the middle of the range.
I used to eat 1500 when I was losing and ever since I upped my calories to maintenance I find it way too hard to ever eat below. I cannot imagine only being able to eat 1500 calories for maintenance for the rest of my life. I would not have the discipline or willpower.3 -
I'm doing this with my husband, so I already am used to him having more to play with at a base level. But I work a more active job (and I'm more active in general outside of work), so it ends up balancing out. And the positive of me eating smaller meals is that I'm used to it, so I tend to have an easier time portioning meals out.0

Well, it is math and science how someone can only eat 1200 calories and not die. I assume you are concerned about their health or are you worried that when you get to 170 you will have a hard time sticking to your goal like some people have trouble with 1200 calories?
I am 5'4" 43 year old woman. At a healthy weight if I am sedentary I am going to maintain eating about 1400-1500 calories. A man the same age, height and activity level would maintain on more calories.
1200 is not a lot of food. It is appropriate calorie deficit for some people to lose weight though. Some would probably like to eat more and struggle with it. They could have more calories if they can change their goal or activity level. Yeah, they would have to work harder than a 5'9" 270 lb man does to get 1800 calories and maybe that doesn't suit their situation.
Forget about the number. Don't feel bad for other people doing what they need to do. Be inspired by their effort. Tell them they are doing great for sticking to it just like you would want to hear.
It would be unhealthy for you to eat 1200 calories at your size. When you get to 170 lbs your calorie goal is not going to be 1200. Even if you were 130 lbs you would need to eat more. Your calories needed are going to gradually decrease as you get smaller. MFP will not set your goal below 1500 if you are male. Maybe you could ask in the maintenance forum how those who had 100+ lbs to lose adjusted.4 -

Thank goodness. And yes I do praise to those who get by on the low calorie count.0 -

Thank you. Empathy or sympathy for those less blessed in the calorie department is very rare around here.
And, yes maintenance calories under 1500 sucks. Nothing good about it at all. Enjoy your good fortune. I am indeed quite jealous of your calorie allotment.2 -
I like looking at what other's eat to give me ideas of things I might try. It's interesting to see what people eat around the world or even the US. But there are some days that I know I'm going over my goal (don't always log it at the exact moment I eat it) and I think back to those ppl who have so few to budget with. Makes me wonder if I'll be in that boat at some point. But if so....i'm learning how to eat less now....0

Check out https://www.reddit.com/r/1200isplenty. It's a subreddit dedicated to those following a 1200 calorie diet, they often post their meals. It's nice for inspiration.0
