Starting this off as I can't seem to find one here as yet.
If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, We welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, We welcome you, too.
This thread is for anyone who rides a bike. Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin, at home or the gym? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.
There's no set challenge across participants - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group. Just pick your own target that you want to achieve this month, post that when you join the thread, and post updates throughout the month as you're working towards your target.

Started off the cycling year with an accidental PR - Garmin tells me it was my fastest indoor 40km ride today.
Low hanging fruit really as I rarely do 40km indoors and it's even more rare I link Garmin when I do.
No particular goal this month but will be doing a mixture of indoor tempo rides and interval training (either side of my FTP) while keeping fingers crossed the weather improves.1 -
Thanks for this!

I'll aim for 600km this month. Riding with my wife today, got distracted, hit a hard edge and became well acquainted with a section of asphalt. Luckily it was low speed so only a bunch of grazes down my left side.
Jan 2018 5hrs 93 km

I am aiming to increase my endurance to above 50 km per ride with plenty of hill work and off road.
I had a go on a penny farthing at Chatsworth. That has to be the coolest bike that I have ever sat on.
I need to change my hybrid bike in 2018. Not sure what to buy . ?? adventure bike.1 -

@suzjmac
Penny farthing would be fascinating to try - maybe not in stop/go traffic though!
Good time of year to shop for a 2017 model on a clearance deal....
Changing your bike or adding a new one to your stable?2 -

When I moved into a new position at work last October, I thought I'd easily transition into having a lot more time for cycling and running, since I'd be working from home on (pretty much) my own schedule. In addition to working from home, I travel quite a bit, maybe every third week, so I figured it would be really, really easy to get in runs and fitness center workouts on the road. I was wrong on all accounts. All of the sudden the road and mountain bikes were gathering dust, and I wasn't getting any free time during the travel because of 'dinner obligations' each night with the people I whom I was visiting.
I decided to make an effort to change that this January, and even though it appears to be a resolution, it's really just when I decided it's time to make a better effort.
Last weekend I decided to put together a Zwift indoor cycling sim/game in my basement office. I already had all the parts, the AppleTV unit, a TV, a CycleOps smart trainer, and my favorite bike (1992 Cannondale R600 in the 'Purple Fizz' color) that is just too harsh on the road for me in my old age. I had the opportunity just to make sure everything connected before heading out to Seattle (Bothell) for the week.
I'm just 3 rides into Zwift, but I can honestly say that the game changed indoor riding for me. Today I took my first FTP test, the 75 minute one, and I'm 100% sure that I wouldn't have even made it through the warmup phase without the game keeping me interested and motivated.
The original post didn't ask for my life story, I'm hoping it maybe gets someone who, like me, wouldn't ride inside before to give the game a try.
What's my goal for January? That was the question. It's my intention to begin the 6 week FTP improvement workout series on Zwift. I also intend to 'just ride' the different maps with low to medium intensity as recovery rides and/or try to get a footpod connected to do some in-game running on the treadmill.2 -

Chris Froome is recording his rides on Strava now - https://www.strava.com/pros/7491815 if anyone fancies doing a side by side comparison or following.
Bit of a slacker though as he's only averaged 425 miles per week for the last four weeks.... Gulp!

I wouldn't mind trying Zwift, the initial set up cost is quite high and puts me off in case I don't like it.
Jan Strava 22hrs 447Km, off to New Zealand tomorrow for a week, includes riding the Otago rail trail for four days, that should add a few slow k's.

Getting into zwift from scratch would be expensive, fortunately I had everything I needed already. From scratch, assuming someone already has the bike, the cheapest way I've seen to put together a rig is to use a classic trainer (regular wheel-on without electronics, a speed/cadence sensor that has ant+4 or bluetooth (many riders already have this with their bike computer) that can be had pretty cheaply if it needs to be bought, an AppleTV unit ($170-ish USD) (and a tv) ,or a laptop or desktop PC. The recurring $17 USD monthly software cost subscription is expensive, but I think the developers are doing a good job with the game.
My progress so far, did a few freerides, then an FTP test (195), now I'm 2 days into the six week FTP builder program for beginners. Today's workout was tough for me (week 1 day 2), not because of the sprints, but the 12 minute "cooldown" at 75% of my FTP number was brutal. We have snow and ice in Atlanta, Georgia now, I'm usually riding outside in shorts in January, so I'm thankful for being able to ride inside and have an interactive workout program that motivates and challenges me.

Today I got out for a rather challenging bicycle ride. I cycled up one hill and then decided to tackle another one right away ... up to a look out point.
Distance: 63.7 km (39.5 miles)
Elevation: 1,006 m (3300 ft)
Moving Time: 4:02:02
Elapsed Time: 4:28:56
Speed: Avg: 15.8 km/h | Max: 42.1 km/h

End of first week of January and not felt great most of the time so kept the training intensity down just doing indoor tempo rides.
Three sessions and 80.5 virtual miles.
Still feeling under par so taking it easy, fitness is good but health not so much.
153 indoor miles for the month.
Finally feeling like I'm getting back to feeling well so progressively pushing up the intensity and switching from mostly steady state to intervals. 1min / 4min intervals felt easy, 2min / 6 min intervals today - not so much!
218 indoor miles so far this month.3 -

Yay! First outdoor ride of the year. Always seems very strange and a sensory overload when you have been training indoors for a couple of months.
34 miles at a steady pace and really nice to get out into the countryside rather than be stuck indoors.
273 miles for the month.3 -
111 miles for the month. Feels like a lot more because the structured workouts keep ending up on the hilly courses (zwift) which means incredibly slow pace... Maybe someday I'll ride outside again...0

Not quite what I had hoped. I had hoped for 65-70 hours like the last two Januaries. But I wasn't taking a university course the last two Januaries. That has kind of eaten into my time a bit. So ... 57 hours isn't bad.

218 indoor miles so far this month.
Yay! First outdoor ride of the year. Always seems very strange and a sensory overload when you have been training indoors for a couple of months.
34 miles at a steady pace and really nice to get out into the countryside rather than be stuck indoors.
273 miles for the month.
Used final few hours of January to get up to 303 miles for the month.
That will do for me as it's more than I would normally manage at this time of year - the benefit of being retired.2 -
Wow! Glad to see this thread continuing.
It will be a few months before those of us without fat bikes in the great white frozen north can venture outside. But I did get out for a quick trip around the block last weekend. We had a thaw and a sunny 45 degree day. 3.2 miles never felt so good. Can’t wait to get back out on the mountain bike trails!1 -
Is there a February thread?0

For all the cyclists ... indoors or out ... I've created a February thread ...
