Help!

I have a fit bit which syncs to mfp, and it logs my steps. I exercised today for 30 minutes on an elliptical, and I reached 12, 000 steps overall. Mfp is giving me 1006 extra calories for my walking and exercising, but that seems like an awful lot. I ate 1, 640 calories total today, so it's telling me I'm over 500 calories deficient. Please help. I want to lose weight, and I want to eat enough during the day. Thanks

Did you also input your exercise into MFP exercise column? When you have a fitbit connected you don't add extra cardio activities because than it will give you too many calories burned. I hit 10 to 12000 steps daily and it has never given me that many exercise calories so something definitely seems off.

Not necessarily, it all depends on your start weight, the activity level you have in MFP and effort. I can easily get around 900-1000 calories from my Garmin for around the same amount of activity as OP describes and I eat all of my exercise calories back and lose just fine.

OP - What are your stats? Are your 12000 steps incidental steps at work/home/school or through intentional walks/runs? A good starting point is to eat around 50-75% of the calories earned through exercise and review your weight loss over a 4-6 weeks period, then if you're losing faster than expected you can increase/ if you're losing slower you can decrease.
