Depends on what you’re doing. I start off with just the bar, which is still too heavy for some stuff. Dumbbells, I have 5, 10, 15, and 20 lbs and use them all for different things. It would be nice to also have 8/12lb but I don’t want to spend more money right now.

I'm a complete beginner, I just want to tone my arms up after losing 52lbs in weight.

Got to ask @peebles6, do you live in Peebles, Scotland?

Read through the list posted, and be realistic about your capabilities.
If a 45lbs barbell is too heavy to start with do a bodyweight or dumbbell routine to build up your strength and work in form.

Whatever you start with start light and slow with a focus on form. Nothing worse than burning oneself out, or injuring oneself a couple of weeks after starting.

A 3, none consecutive, day a week programme is usually best for beginners. It gives plenty of recovery time.

    Cheers, h.
