Just started, sudden loss, what's going on?

6 days into my new diet following week of caloric debauchery. I think I was probably eating 3,000 calories/week and I have cut back to 2100. I am 6'1' with a desk job and I commute 8 miles/day on my bicycle.

First weigh-in, 230. Yesterday, 225. Is that normal to have such a sudden drop when you first start? Should I be worried?

It's normal and it's probably mostly water. Keep at it :)

I thought you only lost water with low-carb diets, but yeah, that makes sense. Just afraid I cut too many calories and would end up in starvation mode.

This is the Mayo Clinic's explanation of the big loss we all experience in the first week:

When you reduce calories, the body gets energy from stored glycogen, a type of carbohydrate found in the muscles and liver. Glycogen is bound to water, so when you burn glycogen, the body releases water. Fat loss takes more time.
