So rather than overwhelm people with walls of text, I've been slowly gathering a couple of infographics either that I've made myself or that are posted regularly on the boards that might make it easier for noobs to see how things work. I'll start with a couple and add more over time. If anyone else has any good ones please feel free to share in the same format.
It's also handy for those of us who post regularly to find them all in one place to copy and paste them again.

i love the estimated vs. weighed peanut butter pic. There is no perfect calorie counting, but we can do a very good job if we try.14

Can't take credit for that one, but it does beautifully illustrate just how easy it is to underestimate how much you're eating11 -
The first dozen or so times I tried to lose weight I gave up after 2 weeks, just because I didn't know about the fluctuations...9

I just saved the PB pic! I'm guilty of just guessing what everything is. Getting ready to order a bunch of random tablespoons to fix this problem.1

You read through that PB picture too fast. It is titled Why is a food scale so important? Tablespoons, teaspoons, measuring cups, etc. still allow for error. A food scale is your best bet for accuracy.tinkerbellang83 wrote: »Why is a food scale so important?

@beingalteration don't order tablespoons, order a food scale, spoons/cups are only marginally more accurate than guessing.10 -

I wonder how you can log foods with scale. Most nutrition facts are done in metric system, but not all.0

Almost all packaged food has nutrition facts by weight on the packaging, fresh produce nutrition info is available on the USDA database, if it's not in the MFP database you add it yourself. There's a very good post on this in the Most Helpful posts on either Getting Started or General Health board, can't remember which.1 -

Newbie here. I have a question. When logging food on tracker at the bottom are the goals for protein, fat, sugar etc. As long as i have my calories within my range will I lose weight even if the other measurement are higher than my goals?0

Yes, assuming your logging is accurate (you use a food scale and choose accurate database entries).
People may have nutrition goals that they are trying to achieve where macros become more important, but for weight loss, the calorie column is all that matters.2 -

I love this. My weight loss has stopped the past 3 weeks and 've been beating my head against a wall trying to rationalize that I'm doing everything 'right' and I want to quit and go have a damn cupcake but this thread kind of talked me off the proverbial ledge.9

Actually, comparing my stats to Mildred, my target caloric intake with no exercise should only be 995 per day. If it defaults to 1200 and I'm eating +100 calories per day over that target (thinking one banana shouldn't hurt) then no wonder I am not losing. I will have to exercise to 'earn' my 200+ calories to hit the 1200 calorie mark. Another way math can hurt you.5
