I always feel guilty

No matter what I eat I seem to always feel guilty about eating it. I have began eating healthy and using the calorie counter has helped in keeping my food intake under control. However, if I eat a large salad instead of having a normal meal I feel guilty about it being "large". If I have an extra snack, albeit a healthy one, I feel guilty too. Does anyone experience this besides me? What should I do about it? I don't want to starve myself to lose the weight.

You should definitely fight it. Do you prelog? If not, start doung that. Seeing your calorie target as something you're supposed to hit, not go under, can help.6

Oh no honey there's nothing to feel guilty about. I try to eat a well balanced diet and I also include daily treats. Last night I had ice cream, the day before I got M&Ms and I don't feel guilty about it.
If you continue to have these feelings, it might be a good idea to speak to a professional. Eating disorders can very dangerous so it's probably best to try to seek help as soon as possible. I'm not saying you have one, but it may be worth looking into if you continue to feel this way.5 -
You have to fight it. I get those exact same feelings .. often I find myself mentally arguing about having eaten something I think I shouldn’t. Today I have 400kcal spare calories that I can spend on snacking .. I just made a chocolate protein mug cake and ate that ... 100 calories .. I feel so guilty about it ??? Why ??? I have no idea, but I also feel guilty if I hit my allowance and not go under .. it’s frustrating, I fight it, I feel guilty .... I am hoping that next month when I move to maintenance this feeling will subside
I am afraid I can’t help what to do, but to let you know we are in the same boat and you have to fight the guilt and realise it’s good to follow the process7 -
Guilt is overrated.
I think it's important to get a handle on your guilt, definitely. Food is food. Eat enough, not too much, mostly plants. I can't eat enough salad. Salad is good for you, low cal, high nutrients.
I think guilt is something we do to ourselves and it's destructive. I'm guessing you guilt yourself all through your life, right? The "shoulds" are horrible.6 -

You need to be less judgemental.1 -
Not to be "alarmist," but I have to say that my first thought after reading your post was " that could be the beginning of an eating disorder." I think we all feel "guilty" about eating certain things, like maybe a hot fudge sundae when we're watching our weight, but you said you felt guilty about everything you eat. It might be a good idea to seek professional advice if you struggle with guilt about all your food choices. Again, not saying you have a disorder.... Just think your relationship to food might need to be adjusted a little for optimal health and happiness. Eating should be pleasurable- not laden with guilt.5

I think it can be the down side of forming better habits, but it is definitely not a good thing to let it get out of control. Try thinking of the calories you have each day, including any gained through exercise, as a daily budget that ideally should not be exceeded, but also shouldn't be hoarded.it can be spent on what you want, just as though it were a present from someone. In fact, it's a present to yourself for a healthy life.4

I did. You have to fight it! When I first started I beat myself up if I didn't eat the healthiest thing on the menu, the lowest calorie foods or God forbid a cookie! I slowly added back some of the food I like (that I had eliminated because they were "bad"). I try to take an 90/10 approach to food, while staying within my calories. 90 percent foods that are healthy, nutrient rich and filling and 10 percent of whatever I feel like. Its working for me. Im happy to be eating more of what I like and feeling guilt free. I continued to lose weight even while indulging. Some days I have way more than my 10 percent junk, other days I have no junk. I'm learning to roll with it. This is for life, so you need to figure out a plan you can live with!3

Don’t be so mean to yourself. A big salad that fills you up might be a better choice than a small brownie.1

Sometimes you just have to keep doing the right things, even when they feel wrong. Your brain will adjust eventually.1
