I’m 62, and have had major back problems for 30 years, and keep gaining weight. I am now 100 lbs overweight, and would appreciate any advise that may help me. I have tried Weight Watchers, and did not lose, and I’m now working on good nutrition to help me feel better. I do feel better, but have not lost any weight.

If you eat at a calorie deficit (e.g. if you burn 2,000 calories a day but only eat 1,500 calories) you should lose weight. Maybe some light walking would be beneficial, if possible, just to get you moving around.

Fill out your profile with a sedendtary activity level and a goal of losing 1.5 lbs per week (initially -- later, after you've lost some weight, you will want to lower the goal to 1 lb and then 0,5 lb per week). Get a food scale. Weigh everything you eat and log it here in your food diary. Try to hit your calorie goal every day, or use a weekly average (save calories from one day to use another day when you might be socializing, etc.).

If you find yourself getting hungry a lot when your next meal isn't close, try experimenting with the effect of different food choices on your hunger levels. Some people are volume eaters and do well eating big piles of foods that aren't calorie dense (mainly non-starchy vegetables and clear liquids like soup broth, water, black coffee and tea). Others find lots of protein or a higher fat diet keep them feeling full. Some people find adjusting meal timing can help. For example, some people aren't particularly hungry for breakfast, and find it actually makes them feel hungrier earlier in the day if they eat breakfast, so they just wait to eat until later in the day, which lets them have larger mid-day and evening meals, or use the breakfast calories for an afternoon or evening snack.

Having a calorie deficit is what matters. How you create it is up to you.

If you can't exercise I'd focus mainly on food. Log what you eat for every meal and monitor your weight. Try and stay as active as you can even if this means doing some simple stretches or walking around a little bit if possible. Maybe look into physical therapy if you have had surgery or need it so you can do some exercises to help with your back problems. Focus mainly on food and make sure you are consistent in eating well and logging your meals.
