Because the more active you are, the more calories you burn in a day.4

You make as much of it a habit as possible, so much is automatic and you don't even have to think about it.
This starts with planning and preparing. Fail to plan and you plan to fail.
Actually, if you look at stats - weight loss is easy - people fail on keeping it off though.
So again - habit and lifestyle changes to find success.
And MFP is trying to teach a life lesson regarding weight.
You do more, you eat more.
You do less, you eat less. (that's the gotcha for most)
In a diet, a little less in either case.4 -

The more excercise you do, you need more calories needed to fuel your body. Your calorie deficit comes from your target goal. MFP suggests you eat from 50% to 100% of your excersise calories that you burned.2 -
I had a desk job until September - although I did a lot of exercise the sitting down element of my working day meant my daily routine had a low base calorie need.
Most people would probably choose sedentary as an activity setting in that scenario.
Then I retired. I'm now moving about much more, being active instead of mostly seated. That extra movement and physical activity burns more calories than sitting down all day staring at a screen.
It was a very noticeable jump in the calories needed to maintain.
Remember purposeful exercise and activity are two separate things on here. Whatever your activity setting the goal given is plus exercise.0 -

OP is talking about the activity setting rather than exercise.

Focus on positive thoughts, losing weight will be good for your health, you will have more energy etc. It really is worth it to make small and lasting changes that lead to weight loss.0 -

The whole principle of CICO is that if you are more active, CO increases.
MFP is designed to help you maintain a constant calorie deficit. Therefore to maintain the same deficit, CI should also increase by the same amount as you increase activity.
Example: Suppose a sedentary person needs 2000 calories per day to maintain, and he has a 250/day deficit. MFP sets him at 1750.
That person then adjusts his daily activity level and now he would need 2250/day calories to maintain, and he keeps the same target deficit of 250/day. MFP would set him at 2000.0
