Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of or slim down love handles??

You can't spot reduce. Trying to get rid of a particular place of fat is like trying to use just the gas in the upper left corner of your gas tank. It will go when you lose enough weight, maybe not in the order you hoped for.
Strength training may improve the look of the rest of your body and make it appear more balanced.10 -
What are some examples of strength training? Maybe I can add to my cardio.1

I do Zumba classes for cardio and BodyPump for weighlifting. I also started jogging by following the Couch to 5K program. The result was I lost my love handles, but it was not because I was doing any of these exercises. I think the only thing that made the difference was I lost weight. Moving more instead of staying sedentary helped me lose weight, in addition to logging calories with MFP. The love handles and stomach pooch were, unfortunately, the last things to go.1

I'd say it's not sad as it makes it inevitable once you hit a healthy weight rather than having to exercise the right way or worry about the latest fad.
