A question about Stronglifts 5x5....

Hey

I just posted earlier about machine weights and there effectiveness etc as I feel to intimidated to enter the weight room at the moment in the gym, however, I do have a barbell and weights at home and have been reading up on the Stronglifts 5x5 programme and wondered if until I gain some confidence could I start this programme at home.

Once I feel confident enough I will then continue it at the gym, I just feel like I need to get over that first hurdle of being in the weight room plus it would help if I actually look like I know what I'm doing.

Stronglifts 5x5 is a great beginner program. Also remember in a weight room people mainly focus on themselves. And no one really cares if someone new enters. If you are hesitant you could always get a PT to go with you the first time.

Thanks for your response, I'm still reading up on the Stronglifts 5x5, I have heard/read good things about it.

I know once I've done it a couple of times I will be fine, its just that first time that worries me haha! I do like the idea of Stronglifts 5x5 though, its a good simple routine and one I feel I could do and progress on.

My main goal is to lose fat which I do on a calorie deficit, I just feel like I miss weight training, this time last year I had a PT where we did most of the workouts that are in Stronglifts so I do feel confident I will be OK as long as I start light. I've never really stopped using weights as I still do bodypump which I know is completely different but I use these classes to keep my form in check.

Can I still do Stronglifts on a calorie deficit?

Of course you can do it on a deficit. Weight training while on a deficit will help preserve muscle while losing fat.

Thanks, I'm definitely going to give this a programme a try.

On the rest days can I do cardio/gym classes such as fatburn, bodystep or does it need to be light cardio such as brisk walking, a run etc.

Listen to your body. If you feel tired do light cardio if you feel fine go for it.

Only downside (I see) to SL at home is, even if you have a rack, you need ceiling height to do the overhead press. Probably 10 feet or so, depending on how tall you are. I can't do this move anywhere at home.

I'd go to the gym and ignore people. Most folks just sort of blank stare and are not really focused on what they seem to be looking at, so don't worry if you think someone is looking at you.

Hell, I'm a 6' guy and was squatting the empty bar. Just the way it is.

I can relate to the feeling of being intimidated when lifting in the gym. I've been there before.

Eventually, as I started going more frequently, I realized people on the gym often focus only on themselves.

So there's really nothing to worry about.

Yep. We're busy doing our thing, trying to get our workout done so we can go pick up kids, or start dinner, or get to work, or whatever.

If I happen to notice a newbie in the weight room, a "good for you" thought flicks through my head and that's about it.

You "can", though it isn't ideal or programmed for a person on a deficit. If you don't have alot to lose, you'll run it a touch longer than if you have a ways to go.

I have around 28lb's to lose, running it a touch longer is not something I'm worried about at the moment, I'm just happy to be getting back into lifting some weights but also following an actual programme.

Of course if my main goal was to gain muscle I'd be more interested in all this cutting/bulking/eating at maintenance etc but I'm really not.
