What keeps you motivated? Or how do you get motivated again?

Hey all,

So i lost about 40 lbs in thr laat year and a half and was feeling pretty motivated and on top of things. Then i moved countries, had a crazy changing schedule, was busy trying to find work and get used to a new city etc, and essentially put on about 15 lbs in the last 3 mo ths (give or take). Now im super discouraged because it will take me SO long to lose that weight again. I keep trying to get motivated to stay on track and in fact ive upped my activity quite a lot and am hitting 10000 to 15000 stepa daily (used to be sedentary). But for some reason i just cant get my eating back on point. I start the day out great, have a meal plan, etc, but by the evening i cant seem to stop myself from having some sort of snack or mini meal which blows my deficit. Ive been sitting at maintenance so atleast im not gaining anymore. But how do i break out of it? Anyone else been here and uf so, what helped you to get yourself in gear?

Cals 1400-1500 goal. Tried 1700 for a bit but still end up overeating.

I started at 205. Got down to 179 before the holidays hit and I spiraled and before i knew it I was back at 199. It took me almost hitting that 200 mark that I promised myself I'd never hit again to get me back on the wagon. Add in that my clothes were getting too tight and I was frustrated about losing everything I worked for. Finally just got back up and started again. Sure it'll take time, but if you start right now you're one day closer.

I lost about 10-15kgs then moved countries. Stopped tracking, ate what I want etc. Probably gained back half of what I lost. I ended up just getting back into the mindset. Im in a new country and want to start fresh so losing weight and looking better was important and even though it took me a couple of months to get back into tracking then joining a gym i still always kept it at the front of my mind then i just got back into the rhythm of it once i was settled :)

I’m focused on my health. Not on my weight. I don’t have much to lose. I’m losing vanity pounds. I like following fitness instagrams, planning vacations, and planning fun activities with my friends. Shopping for clothes always motivates me too :)

I don't know if this helps, but I read somewhere that dedication > motivation

I along these lines, I find it more helpful to work on creating habits that will lead to success than to think about motivation.

I agree with a lot of what was shared already. Just one thing to add - think about your “why.” Articulate it, share it with others, make the “why” meaningful and real to you.

When you need motivation, the “why” can help when no other justification can.

I completely agree with this. Some days can be a bit tough.... but then I remember why I started, and how far I’ve come. And how I’ll feel when I get to goal. That all helps!

What keeps me motivated? Not much. Motivation is, at best, fleeting. I guess I'd say other people I want to impress (i.e. my FL). But ultimately, what keeps me going is simple discipline. It's not always there... some days I just want to be a couch potato and eat everything in the house (which I sometimes do)... but over time, my good decisions and my good days outweigh my bad ones, and progress is the result.

I'm not dieting this time. Instead I'm permanently changing my eating behavior. To help with this I'm learning and practicing 'mindful eating'. I'm also not eating diet food or the same thing repeatedly or obsessing over planning. Instead I am preparing and eating low calorie clean tasty healthy meals, going to the grocery once per week, and eating out only once per month. To help with this I took a free trial from platejoy.com and loved it. Making the planning and creative cooking part of my broader eating behaviors so there's some synergy going. Instead of having a snack for my long commute home, I'm drooling for the recipe I've never tried that sounds so good that I want to have a strong appetite for it. I'm also making myself eat a small breakfast and began walking every day...started 1 mile and ran short of time at 4 miles. It is getting summer hot here now, so I joined a monthly gym yesterday and plan to make it a daily habit. I'm liking the new me and feeling great. I'm making a new normal for me that says no to donuts so no motivation is needed.

Surround yourself with people that have the same goals as you. The only people I follow on Facebook and Instagram are weight lifting trainers and people who are trying to be healthy and eat right. I gravitate toward co-workers who like to work out and eat right. We share tips all the time and are there for each other when lunch is catered.
