Except it’s true. All you have to do is eat fewer calories than you burn for the entire day. Exercise is always a good idea for health reasons (and I’d recommend the OP does something that doesn’t leave her sore for days...DOMS shouldn’t be that long, I don’t think), but it isn’t necessary for weight loss.12 -
Its true we don't have to exercise to lose weight, all it takes is being in a calorie deficit but exercise is so good for us, our general well being, our heart health etc.10
-
OP while any new exercise might hurt for a while (a few days), the body soon adapts and DOMS become a thing of the past.3
-
All that is needed for weight loss is a calorie deficit.
As long as you create a calorie deficit you will lose weight .
If you decide not to go to a gym then that's fine, that's your choice.
I prefer to work out because I aim for a certain physique that is not attainable without heavy lifting but I know that everyone isn't like me and that's okay.8 -
I’d like to have the time for gyms but with such a busy schedule I unfortunately don’t. Just be careful of what your eating all day and get your bum off a chair for the best part of a day and that seems to work best for me with no pain involved8

If your active in your daily life that can contribute as exercise, but it is good to get the heart rate up daily - even a brisk walk is a good idea.

Yeah I watch my portions to lose weight. I exercise to improve my strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health.7
-
Right ... you don't need exercise to lose weight.
But speaking for myself, my life would be so much emptier and less happy without exercise.4 -
True, but as many have said exercise and balanced diet combined are what makes one healthy. Just weighing a certain weight doesn’t necessarily make one healthy. I also find adding exercise improves my mind, it releases endorphins. At the least try to get a twenty minute walk in, no gym required for that. You also don’t need the gym to work your muscles, find a simple body weight routine and your muscles and bones will be healthy too.0

No, you don't HAVE to work out to lose weight. Weight loss is caused by a calorie deficit. BUT, you will feel better when you incorporate exercise. You will increase your cardiovascular health and become a healthier person, rather than just weighing less. Additionally, at some point, you will continue to lose muscle and your metabolism will slow (muscle burns fat) and you will stall more than a person who has more lean muscle mass.
Why not weigh less AND be physically healthier? I would hate to have put in so much effort to lose all my weight (135 pounds) and still feel just as lethargic and unhealthy as I did before. I can run circles around my old self and it feels freakin' amazing.
So can you lose weight without exercise? Absolutely. Is it the best idea for your overall health? nah..

I have DOM's practically 24/7 whenever I'm working out especially when walking up stairs or hills0 -
But exercise makes you feel so good, so why not?????0

You absolutely do have to exercise.. completely ludicrous to say otherwise. A very uneducated comment!!16

You can definitely lose weight without gyms, but I wouldn't say "don't waste money on gyms" unless you add the caveat "if all you want to do is lower the number on the scale." Skinnyfat is a thing, and weight loss alone won't give that toned look that a lot of people are looking for.2 -

While true that you don't need exercise to lose weight, regular exercise comes with numerous other health benefits. I've been in maintenance for over 5 years and still exercise regularly because it's really good for me. Most of my exercise is outside of the gym and out on the road on my bike...but I do go to the gym to lift and don't find it to be a waste of money in the least because I want to be healthy, fit, and strong.
Regular exercise has the added benefit of increased energy expenditure as well...which is nice because I enjoy eating and I like beer.
The soreness is short lived and goes away after a week or two of regular exercise, and can also be diminished if you start off slowly and build up to things.6 -
You don't have to exercise to lose weight. But it depends on your goals.
I've done it both ways. Without exercise I ended up losing all my glutes. Not a look I would prefer for myself ever again if I can avoid it.1 -
Yeah but I don’t want to be healthy wolfman, just skinny. And I’m happy, so just cutting down portion sizes works for me1

gyms aren't a waste of money. they are a tool for a healthier fitter life.
there are also other tools to do this too
losing weight is one thing. i think many of us would like to be more well rounded life0 -

Irony. This is it.
You do NOT have to exercise to lose weight. I lost 50lbs without walking a single block or joining any gym.
Exercise IS helpful to reaching not only goal weight, but goal appearance, but it is not necessary simply for weight loss.2 -
I have personally witnessed it. In November 2016 my Mom was suffering from Alzheimers and Type 2 Diabetes. She was on 4 insulin injections a day, 4 pills for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol pills.
She still lived alone, but my brother was taking care of her finances and buying her groceries. One Friday night they got home from grocery shopping at 9pm, the next morning at 8am she called my brother and told him she needed to go to the hospital because there was something wrong with her stomach. He walked down to her house to see what was wrong and see what she had eaten. In those 11 hours, when she should have been sleeping, she had eaten a 1/2 block of cheese, a pound of hotdogs, a loaf of bread and 1/2 a jug of milk. That day, my brother decided to start preparing her meals. We didn't know if she was forgetting that she had eaten because of the Alzheimer's or was bored or what, but we knew something needed to be done.
That week, my brother took my Mom to a dietician, she weighed 209 pounds. He asked what she should be eating, when they recommended something he knew Mom wouldn't eat he asked for other choices. He asked about portions, he took control. He prepared every meal, but one per week. He allowed her 3 cans of Coke Zero a week, with a small bag of chips. One night a week they went out to eat and he didn't put any restrictions on her choice that night.
Mom did nothing for exercise. By December 2017 when she went into a nursing home she was off all medications but one metformin a day. She weighed 141 the day she was put in. All thanks to my incredible brother who took care of my Mom so well.11 -
Just losing weight doesn’t give you a sculpted physique, and you won’t be fit. That is my goal so exercise is essential for me. However, Just because you’re a normal weight doesn’t mean you are healthy. That’s why a body fat percentage should matter more than a weight. Exercise is essential to a healthy life0

I'm losing weight and not going to the gym, however I am getting some 'exercise' by walking to work, using the stairs and some lunchtimes walk up to 2 miles -pretty light stuff.
I have an indoor rower at home and have just started back on it again after a 2 month layoff. I'm not looking to that to reduce weight but to help build core and other muscle groups. In fact I use it to help relieve a sore back and neck - in my routine the cool down stretching is very important for me.The gym just causes sore body parts for days!
Maybe you were doing a bit too much

Exercise is so much easier when you are at a healthy weight. If you've never been obese, you would not believe the difference it makes to have to lug around that extra weight while doing any physical movement. Not to mention having fat between your legs and under your arms so that you can't even walk in an ergonomically correct manner.
I lost most of my excess weight (~120 of the ~145 pounds I've lost) without any exercise and getting maybe 2000 steps per day of incidental movement. Now that I'm in the normal BMI range, I walk about ~11,000 steps every day.
For me, it was a great boon to know that I could lose weight without exercise. If I'd had to exercise to lose weight, I wouldn't have lost the weight. Maintaining is easier with exercise but still not required from a weight perspective if you are diligent about calorie intake.
You have to figure out what you'll be willing to do over the long haul. The "best" way is useless if you won't do it.7 -

I'm not a fan of toneless bodies, I had a skinny fat roommate, he was thin but looked surprisingly flabby, takes a lot of work to get wolfman though, you prob would never get to that, especially if you weren't trying really hard.1 -
Weight Loss | Weight Gain is - essentially - CICO. It is all about Caloric Deficit | Caloric Surplus. This will affect the number on the scale. That trend will depend on that CICO balance. If you eat more than you burn, you will gain weight. If you burn more than you eat then you will loose weight.
Do you need to go to the gym? No. Not at all. Like I said, it is - essentially - nothing more than CICO. Calories In Calories Out.
But, how do you want your body to look. That is where the gym comes into this.
Lots of people - ignorantly - have the notion that if a chick goes to the gym and lifts heavy then she will eventually look like a dude. HA! Good luck. I promise - assuming that you stay natural - that this will not happen. In fact, I promise that if you set that to be your goal that you would end up sorely disappointed.
Study after study after study shows that resistance training has so many positive effects. For both men and women. Even more so for women. I won't bore you all with that list.
But, you do you. It is your body....it is your life. Only you can decide what you want. I would only suggest that you keep an open mind and that you find some super solid people (Paul Revelia, Eric Helms, Lyle MacDonald, et al) to follow and then, if you still believe that the gym is not for you, all good! But at least - and this is going to come out the wrong way - make an informed decision. :-)0
