Has anyone tried any meal replacement shakes? Do they help you stay on track? Do they fill you up? Any input would be helpful, good or bad. Thank you

When I've tried them in the past, I haven't found them particularly filling.2

Sometimes they are okay for a meal on the run. I wouldn't have them every day. I used to make smoothies which were essentially meal replacement shakes they had protein powder and fruits and vegetables about 300 calories. They kept me going in the morning for about 2 hours or so then I was starving. All in all I would say not that great but sometimes they are necessary if you have no time to eat.1

Ok thanks. Thats what I thought.0

I make smoothies out of 1 cup skim milk or almond milk with 1 cup frozen strawberries and I add a scoop of slim fast vanilla powder and it keeps me satisfied for at least 3 hours works for me and has helped me drop the pounds. I've tried other protein or shake powders that I haven't liked, find what works for you.1

Vegan protein powder blended with milk and ice in a vitamix makes a texture and thickness that fills me up for hours, but I can't afford my own vitamix so I have to get em at a shake bar and thats WAY too expensive as well.1
-
I have used them in the past because I could keep a few cans in my desk at the office and if I needed to work through lunch and din't bring anything in, it would help me get through the afternoon. I would be less hungry but still hungry. Helped get macros for the day.2
-
I would only recommend them to people who don't like actual food.
Which, if you have weight to lose...I'm assuming is not you.
I'd rather eat real food to lose weight. It's cheaper, and more enjoyable.8 -
Never worked for me. I like to chew my nutrition, not sip it through a straw.6

I have a breakfast shake pretty much every morning as it's super quick and lets me sleep in an extra 10-15 minutes. I don't count that as a meal 'replacement' though. It's just my breakfast.
Meal "replacement" indicates that you're foregoing meals and having shakes to lose weight which is a temporary fix and I feel sets you up for a backslide once you stop replacing your meals.
So yeah. Shake/smoothie meal as a part of your normal eating schedule = perfectly fine. Giving up real food and drinking your calories as a 'weight loss solution' = temporary fix and much higher chance of coming unstuck.9 -
Sometimes I'll buy one from my work if I'm really busy and no time to eat. I get a mix of fruit, veg, protein and fat, maybe some extra carbs if I need it. It's not a bad option if you'd rather drink a meal than eat one. Either way, they both have calories.

I've used them for convenience/ease of prep. I've switched to alternatives, but may go back.0

Same... sure we are not related? lol1 -
I use them if I'm on an early at work just for convenience and to fill me up till lunch. Also I don't really get a lot of dairy in my diet as I'm not a big fan so it's a way to get my calcium up mixing milk in!
I couldn't do the recommended '3 shakes or packs a day and a healthy snack in between' I'd be STARVING!0 -

I never found anything like Slim Fast to work for me, and they are insanely high in sugar. Part of the reason they don't keep you full, I think, is because all the calories come from empty carbs which burn up really fast. However, once I started using protein shakes, I did better.
I've used this one in the past and it tasted good. It kept me from feeling hungry for 3 or 4 hours, so I used it for breakfast most of the time. The protein in this one is vegan if that is important to you. I used 1.5 servings of this as a meal replacement, shaken in a blender bottle. https://shop.oxyfresh.com/products/vibe/
Recently we started using this product, partly because it's less expensive due to containing whey protein. I eat meat and dairy and so have no issue with whey protein. I use 2 scoops of this as a breakfast shake every weekday, usually drinking it in the car on the way to work. The chocolate and cinnamon flavors are really good and mix well in a blender bottle. The vanilla we aren't really fans of and it seems to stay clumpy unless put in the blender. This one does contain artificial sweeteners, of which I usually steer clear, but I really can't taste anything offputting, just sweetness. https://www.bodybuilding.com/store/rsp-nutrition/truefit.html?skuId=RSP4900016
For both of these products, I have used unsweetened unflavored almond milk as the liquid for mixing. Hope that helps. I should add that my husband and 15 year old daughter both also drink these most weekday mornings, and my 15 year old is a VERY picky eater. I think that attests to the fact that they both actually taste pretty good.4 -
I find protien shakes to be more satisfying than standard meal replacement shakes.1
-
I sometimes have a protein shake. I find them filling and they help me add protein to my diet. Not everyday, just when i feel like it2
-
Premier Protien shakes in a bottle are good. They come in many flavors and have 30 grams of protien.2
-
I get a lot of satisfaction from chewing. So shakes double my misery when dieting. A little hungry with no chewing.
I did try out a home recipe for solyent. I mostly made it when I was depressed.1 -

I could not agree more. When I lost my 90lbs, it was all about none of this and lots of that and take this little pill and see the "coach" once a week. Most of the weight is still off, but it was creeping back. Now I am about better choices, eat when I am hungry, track what I eat, saying no when I feel like it, relaxing without guilt and walking walking walking. I think this plan will take me to my 80th birthday..

I got bought those "Idealshake" shakes you see advertised on FB. I was half expecting it to be bogus, but I was pleasantly surprised that they're pretty damn good (the vanilla and salted caramel especially). I was always getting hungry between lunch and dinner, and it's only 100 calories (130 if using unsweetened almond milk) and filling. The key is to blend if up with ice, slurp it down, and drink 8oz of water immediately afterward and you're good for 3 hours.0

May I just suggest that you try a NutriBullet instead of spending the money on a VitaMix? NutriBullet's are about $89 (less if you can find a 20% off coupon for Bed Bath & Beyond!), and those suckers can pulverize anything!! I love mine. I put everything in it--whole veggies, seeds, etc. Really great little machine.0

I only drink them when my gastroparesis and Crohn's are very bad and I can't eat solid food0

I am a fan of Soylent myself. A lot of shakes are low cal and are specifically for dieting. Soylent is meant as a meal replacement - so it’s 400 calories per serving with 20% of daily nutrients. It comes in powder or liquid. Just a heads up they are pro GMO and label their products as such. I used to consume 50% of my calories on Soylent. It’s convenient, quick, and easy. I always added crushed ice to chew on - made it feel more satisfying, it always did fill me up. Fast forward to today, I usually make smoothies with Kale, fruit, oats, chia, Greek Yogurt, PBFit, avocado and almond milk. Making smoothies is more cost effective and I can have a variety of flavors depending on the fruit I add. However, I keep Soylent on hand for those nights the blender is dirty or need a quick meal. (I prep my breakfast the night before)

I drink protein shakes when I need the extra protein, but I don't find them (or any other liquids, for that matter) very satiating.1
-
I do the protein "smoothie" more than a "shake" because I use crushed ice, slightly thawed frozen strawberries, along with Greek yogurt and vanilla protein powder.
It's sweet, tastes like dessert and super filling. It's not a meal replacement for me when I have them (which is not always), but a meal itself - especially when I double up the protein.0 -
I don’t find them very satisfying. I have tried most of the premier protein flavors and can’t get myself to like them. They also don’t keep me full.
Protein BARS on the other hand! I usually have at least one of those per day. They taste better, keep me full longer and I get the satisfaction of chewing my calories. Most go great with coffee too!0
