Anyone else here struggle with addiction? I have almost 2 years sober!

Hey everyone! Just curious as to how many of you are addicts or alcoholics (sober or not). After I got sober, I gained so much weight and I’m ready to lose it to better myself. What’s your story?

Congratulations on two years of sobriety! That’s awesome!
I’ve been sober for almost a year and a half. I was a full blown functioning alcoholic for about 6 years. I started drinking heavy when I was 25 to cope with my mom being sick. I didn’t have a real support system to help me take care of her, so I turned to alcohol to cope. I used to be a very isolated drinker. I was never the type to go to bars or drink with other people. My favorite place to get wasted was on my bed listening to music. It got to the point where I was going through a liter of vodka every two days. I went to rehab twice without much luck.
In November of 2016 my brother almost died from a suicide attempt and that’s when I made the decision to give up alcohol once and for all. It reached a point where it was no longer fun anymore, and I had to get better not just for myself, but for my mom. So I just stopped. It was the BEST decision I ever made. I don’t miss drinking AT ALL. I never want to go back to that hell.29 -

I still over drink and partake in other stuff that is very shameful.
But addiction has been a part of my life since getting out of High School.
Way for me to deal with both my parents getting cancer twice and no real friends to help.
I'm also a smoker but slowly smoking less and less.
It is a *kitten* situation, I have not found my way out but hopefully one of these day I can proudly say I'm a year clean of everything.
Congrats to you and hopefully the weight gain doesn't affect you too much.
I know when I take a few days off drinking my body debloats and I look much better.

I'm currently trying to fight my addictions. I've been sober for a while and hopefully can stay that way. I am trying to lose weight to help relieve some of my back pain. Good luck to everyone who is trying to stay happy and healthy!!! Kudos to all the sober ones. You are an inspiration!

Good luck staying sober! I wouldn't say I was ever an alcoholic, but I have been sober for 10 years now because I saw myself on a path to where I could turn into people I didn't want to be like.
There is a thread in the Challenge section for Less alcohol one day at a time that you might want to look into. It can definitely be done, and I wish you all the best.

14 years sober on July 4th.
The concepts of self-accountability and responsibility and owning my own *kitten* that I utilize to maintain my sobriety are the same concepts that help me lose weight. The only one responsible for what I eat or drink is me. If I don't like the results of my actions, I guess I gotta make some changes.12 -

I'm over 28 years sober and clean. Over eating is my primary addictive behaviour which i have struggled with for many years. I'm currently eating well, exercise regularly and haven't regained the weight I lost over 4 years ago. It requires effort.16

I have had issues in the past - I was prescribed some strong codeine based pain killers after an accident, it was so easy to just take a few and feel the calm wash over me, but I absolutely hated how dependant I became on them, its still a big thing for me. When I have problems with my back they always give me the same pain relief as I cant take the anti inflammatory medication.3

i had to quit drinking when i was 21 . a violent homelife, which lead to me saving my mother's life, insecurity, and not realizing my potential in university were all contributing factors . i went to AA and was sober for an entire year . i met people who helped me with coping skills. i understand for some AA is a bit over the top, but for me it was the best decision i made for myself at the time.
i still struggle with overindulging from time to time now that i have cancer *sigh*
Good for you that you've gotten this far. Be proud of your accomplishment. Realize how much better off your body is without substances, and most of all - be kind to yourself

Congratulations! In February, I celebrated 13 years clean and sober. Alcohol was my drug of choice, and I gained a ton of weight in the last year of my drinking.
I now struggle because of blood pressure medication, my age, and my love of all things food. I realize that I am a boredom eater. Not doing anything, shove some food in your mouth..... UGH
I am starting over on the weight loss journey.
Stay strong and stay healthy! You have got this!
Every day one of us alcoholics wakes up in our own bed, without a hangover, is a great day!

Congrats on staying sober. I've lived with alcoholics, and I was a 32 year smoker. I quit in 2012. I was a daily drinker and on New Years, I opted to just keep it to Friday nights and Saturday nights. Now I hardly do either. Quitting any addiction is hard so kudos for overcoming on a daily basis.6

congrats on the sobriety. it's never an easy journey. i was never addicted to alcohol, but i was addicted to food. it was my immediate go to whenever something was happening that i didn't want to cope with. unlike alcohol, i cannot cut food out of my life completely, so i still work with it every day to keep my head on track.3

I'm presently in recovery myself. I was a functional alcoholic for 5 years and now I find myself being tempted to reach oblivion when I'm stressed. It was always my go-to when I wanted to "disappear" for awhile from reality. Congrats to you on your sobriety! It's a hard road and I applaud you.

Congrats on your sobriety.
I am an alcoholic/addict with ... well, I don't even want to say how long I have been sober...very long.
I don't know how chemical dependency and a propensity to addiction relates to fitness and weight control. Or even if it does. However, attempting to lose weight is putting yourself in a stressful situation, which is relevant.
Be sure that your sobriety is strong, that you keep everything out in front of you, and that your support system knows what you are doing and that you keep them close.
On the other hand, getting healthier in all ways is definitely a part of sobriety.
I applaud you on your effort.

I've suffer from ptsd and substance abuse has controlled much of my life. I just as recently as November was admitted for outpatient care. I'm 6 months clean, and working hard everyday to stay that way.24
