I had my 22nd clean anniversary back in April. I stepped away from alcohol, numerous narcotics and cigarettes all on the same day. I went from 9st (grossly underweight since I'm 6' 4", but I just couldn't put on weight) up to just over 17st. August last year, I decided to finally start doing something about it and started logging all I was eating. October, I started adding some "move more" into the equation with at least 5 miles a day of brisk (4+mph) walking. I'm now down to 12st 11lb and nearly at my target weight of 12st 7lb.13

I have been to multiple AA meetings but I am not an alcoholic.
Sobriety is a powerful thing.2 -
The fact that I need to 'watch' my food EVERY day tells me that I earned my seat in this thread...ODAT for OAers too!6

30 years sober from a variety of mind numbers and so much happier. I gained weight after quitting tobacco. Now I'm working on my eating behaviors and winning that one too.
I think I've an addictive nature and fill the oral fixation or yearning for the nipple with something. Should I blame my mom for weaning me too early ? It works best to own the problem completely and not blame anyone else for any degree of my problems. I also don't blame my DNA or my environment or any other circumstances for my problems.
They are my problems to fix and no one else's.
I do have a friend that takes care of problems I'm too weak to handle myself. All I have to do is ask then follow his lead. He's done that for me so many times that I've come to lean on him a lot. His name is Jesus Christ and he'll help you too. All you have to do is ask. Be blessed and you won't need luck.

Yep me too people since we are piling on, 32 years clean and sober, alcohol was my thing.
I am going through an extremely tough emotional redesign right now, struggling to maintain my recent 20 lb loss, and struggling with emotional eating, but I am grateful to say that even on the darkest nights (and last night was one), alcohol never enters my mind as a solution. I know better today than to throw gas on the fire5 -
Yes a few years sober now! It was coupled with an eating disorder as well so going through recovery stopped me from going back and accessibility as well as having the support. Congratulations on being sober and staying clean xx5

I currently have 2 years 8 months and 1 day clean from all drugs and alcohol. Now comes the battle of losing the pounds I packed on when i stopped using. I would love to have some MFP friends who are also in recovery. Feel free to add me!8

do cigs count and oh Food .... really 3 years no smoking , and all my life addicted to food , I use to binge which is like getting drunk , you almost feel the same ....long time ago (young adult years) I drank a lot , but after my first child (stopped drinking as soon as i knew) I stopped drinking almost completely , but smoked and ate more . My husband is an alcoholic but it has been 6 years no drinking and 5 years no smoking . we both are in our 50's so it was time to live healthy if we want to see our son grow and watch him have a life . My daughter is disabled , so we have to be here for her too . she is 29 but acts 12 so she will always need us . So I am losing weight and hubby is not drinking and we both are smoke free !! and Good Luck to all , it's a hard road , but we all can do it!!!!5

Clean and Sober between 1997 and now, minus one little relapse, a trip to Las Vegas 13 years ago. Yeah Baby. Only way to live. Sobriety is an adventurous high all it's own.11

I do not have an addiction to alcohol, but I did have an addiction to self-harm starting at age 8. Took me years to overcome it. Addiction is very hard, no matter what it is. I take it day, by day.10

15 years sober but now food gets the best of me . Friends request accepted a4

Sober for the last few years and also quit a 20 year smoking habit. I have a terribly addictive personality but I’m finally figuring out how to replace unhealthy addictions with better options like working out. Congratulations to everyone on overcoming their struggles.4

Now you have realised sobriety clarifies, cuts through, the essence of todays stressful life. Your health in all its forms has room to evolve, if you nurture a healthy diet and exercise, you will begin to see life the way it was meant to be and you will wake up feeling like you can take on the world , but most importantly, you will !1

No one thinks their addictive tendencies can be remedied by luck. We are smart enough to recognize unhealthy behaviors/thoughts/actions but struggle with our tendencies to want to act out - regardless of how we act out.0

I was an addict once... Nearing my 10th year sober in December. I have gained over 100 pounds because of stopping it. I, like everyone here, was at such a low point in their lives. I was ashamed of what happened to me, and I couldn't tell my parents because I would have ended up in rehab. I had to go through it all alone, because of that. It's hard. I still think about it. But I've been glad I never went back to it. There will be hard days, and good days, but the best thing you can do is keep fighting.4

It will be 10,000 days for me October 19th 2019 or over 27 years sober. When I gave up smoking a year after I stopped drinking I traded that addiction for food. I find myself now insulin resistant with very poor eating habits I skip breakfast and usually lunch than eat most of my calories before I go to sleep. I try to eat food that is free of chemicals however and never eat processed food. Fitness Pal is the only way I can get the weight off and keep it off. My advice would be to get a support group and help others as much as you can.4

Love the day count, Gary!
Love to see all the recovery going on here too.
Will celebrate my own 28 years in Jan 2019 - as long as the addiction ran. Drug of choice? Anything that hit the dopamine/serotonin buttons.
Ate my way through therapy to be sure I could make recovery stick - which worked, actually. Now the weight threatens to kill me so I have a new recovery program, with food.
Hang in there everyone!3 -
I spent Saturday night in the Emergency Room with a family member. 2 young adults in early 20’s came in from heroin ods. This is heart breaking.3

One day at a time. Sometimes one hour at a time, I have 31 years sober. Without it, you can not have the life you choose because your substance picks your job (or not), how much money is in your pocket (or not), who you sleep with or date, what clothes you wear etc etc. The only way to get a life, your life, is to not use just for today. Choose your own life!2

I've been sober 9 months. My new addiction is food - that's why I'm here. I wish the best for everyone trying to stay healthy.3
-
yes food... that is why I am here.. I am sure we all battle something. Congrats to you on your sobriety!2
