I’m currently battling severe GERD and possible development of a peptic ulcer. I’m barely able to eat anything that doesn’t cause pain after. I’m on two meds and go for another endoscopy next week. The problem is my calorie intake is ridiculously low because of it. Today for example, I have had a 397 calorie intake, but just existing I have already burned 1037 calories today. I’ve lost 15 lbs in a month. Not the way I wanted to lose it. I get full so easy. Please any suggestions?

Does your doctor know you are eating so little? Can you get a referral to a RD?1 -
Yes he does. That’s why the tests are scheduled so soon. Last night though the pain was much that I ended up taking tums on top of 40 mg of Prilosec I had before dinner. It seemed to help short term anyway, I just ate a banana and some natural peanut butter. Here’s hoping it won’t hurt me.0

I don't have GERD so no suggestions, hopefully I at least bumped your thread. I hope you get relief soon.0 -

I have GERD and take two meds for it and still have to take antacids on top of it. I had the scope and I produce a lot of acid. as for diet there are times certain things bother me and other times they dont.some things like peppers though cause me issues all the time so I try and avoid them as much as I can.as for GERD friendly foods its going to depend on the person and what makes their GERD worse or better.
you may want to try an elimination diet, if you think a certain food is making it worse, eliminate it for a few months and slowly reintroduce it back into your diet. If it bothers you again then eliminate it, then move on to the next food. I also have gastritis and get flare ups and need to take a medication for that. which helps for a short time.. I have more indigestion now with the meds than actual reflux. But some days its torture. it doesnt stope me from eating though.
I take 40mg of omeprazole a day and 300 mg of ranitidine at bedtime. and antacids throughout the day. I told my endo that I had to do this and thats when they gave me the meds for the gastritis flare up. for most people though caffeine, spicy foods, greasy or deep fried foods can be a trigger, others it may be citrus or certain seasonings/herbs. it could be a combo of things. its all going to be trial and error for the most part.
higher calories foods are going to be nuts, nut butters, oils, fats, avocado, etc but those things could exacerbate it. if it doesnt then eat those things. a tsp of oil is like 120 calories so cook veggies/meats in oil.2 -
I feel your pain....or felt, as the case may be.
For me, GERD was caused primarily by certain grains (I could do oats, rice, and corn OK), refined sugars, refined carbohydrates in general, high-temp beverages, and/or large amounts of spicy foods (I could do a little but if I got carried away with salsa, I'd pay).
I was taking Zantac and Tums regularly. When it stopped working, I started Nexium. It's a relieving bandaid, but hardly a "cure," and leads to its own host of problems such as nutrient malabsorption, etc.
The ONLY thing that helped me was dietary intervention.
I started with an AIP elimination. After that, I implemented keto. I currently eat 1500-2000 calories per day, 135-150g of protein, 95-115g of fat (mostly from avocados, nuts, EVOO, coconut oil, etc.), and 25 g NET carbohydrate (mainly from fibrous veggies and fruits). Have dropped 23 lbs the healthy way too. Overall systemic inflammation is WAY down.
I have not taken an antacid or PPI in over 6 months. In fact, I now take a digestive enzyme that has Betaine HCl in it.
I've been down this road once before. Complete "remission" from the GERD the first time. Why I fell off the wagon the first time, I'll never know.
Best of luck!1 -

its great that keto works for you but some of us cant do keto(I cant due to a health issue) and for some the fats can cause GERD to be worse. which is also my issue. like I said what works for one wont work for everyone.I have done the elimination thing and carbs arent an issue for me when it comes to GERD. I can do cold coffee but not hot coffee due to my gastritis.1 -
I went through somewhat the same scenario. Found out I had the beginnings of an ulcer and I had atrophic gastritis. It's miserable. Hopefully the tests will get things settled and the doctor can get you on the right path. I think (it was a long time ago) I lived on jello, bites of banana, saltine crackers and in small amounts at a time. Let us know how it goes.0

I don't have gerd per say but I have severe gastroparesis and gastroduodenal Crohn's which cause major acid reflex/nausea/indigestion/gas, etc so I take a variety of stomach pills. I'm on omeprazole and tums for acid daily and often drink liquid gaviscon.0

I wish I could do Keto, but I am prone to kidney stones. I’ve had 3 this year alone. The high oxalate list is ridiculous. I can’t eat spinach at all. Like ever. Hoping that the meds and diet change help. I’m also allergic to avocados. I break out in hives. I will try some of your food suggestions though. Thanks for responding

I have an awesome anxiety disorder that has me so worried that I’m not get enough calories daily. I’m trying my best. The doc also mentioned IBS because of some other fun issues.

Truthfully I don’t have an actual diagnosis as of yet that is why they are doing more tests the last endoscopy was done well over a year ago, and it’s my fault because the soon as I started feeling a little better I just started eating whatever I want it again. All day today it’s been a pain in my side, my lower left abdomen, and some on and off pain in the center of my chest. Add in some nausea and bloating and I’m having a party over here. At least sitting out in the sun has kept me from being depressed about this.

lower left abdomen pain can mean a lot of things. are you having any bathroom issues? if so tell your endo. many times stomach issues and bowel issues go hand in hand. pain in your right side? if so that could be a gall bladder issue. hope you get it sorted out soon. it sucks having issues and being in pain.0 -

Right side pain is only occasionally and usually due to constipation. The left side pain is pretty constant. I did tell him about the constipation which I am on the miralax now. The digestive issues are getting so frustrating. I just successfully ate a turkey sandwich on gluten free whole grain bread so that’s something I guess.

miralax for many is pretty pointless not saying go off it but if its severe constipation maybe they can get you something else? I am 43 and had a colonoscopy a few months ago because I started having constipation and pain. the dr prescribed me a pill to take as it got worse after the colonoscopy(he said for most it improves). anyway I havent had to take any yet as my bowels have been more normal lately.
I have a history of colon cancer in my family so thats why they did the test as well. if possible have them test your gallbladder and other things. hubby had gall bladder issues and certain foods he ate caused severe GERD and pain, the pain was bad enough and in his chest he thought he was having a heart attack so he went to the ER and they kept him overnight and ran tests. They didnt find anything but they never checked his gallbladder so they did a PET scan and found his gallbladder basically was functioning at like 10%. They took it out and he barely has indigestion now. so thats one thing to look into it cant hurt. It sounds like something else is going on besides GERD.0 -

My mom and sister have both had their gallbladder removed. Both my parents have had polyps removed from colon. My dad has cancer but it’s in prostate in remission. I get the worst pain on the left side of lower abdomen. That’s where it is 80 percent of the time. Bit of nausea occasionally but mainly it’s lower left wrapped a bit around side. Like that cramp you get from running.

that could be anything like I said. if your family has history of those things its best to get checked for those things to have them ruled out as a cause of your issues. the pain on the lower left side could be diverticulitis(my grandma had this) it could be a cyst,a twisted ovary, infection, etc. so many possibles. so yeah if you can talk to your doctor and let them know whats going on. I hate going to doctors but when something is ongoing and bothering me I get it checked out to make sure its nothing major.0
