Does hiking in a hot day burn more calories?

It’s suppose to be 106 degrees tomorrow but I’m in the mood to hike. Has anyone ever hiked on a hot day? How did you manage it?

No it doesn’t burn more calories.

I wouldn't hike in the heat. People are rescued here where I live all the time. The heat is deadly.

Ayup. Wear a hat and whopping boatloads of water. Avoid sunstroke. Honestly, stay inside and walk around a gym if it's 106 out there.

Hiking in cold might as you would need extra energy to help maintain your body heat, but the amount would likely not be significant. In heat, while you sweat more, that doesn't burn energy, it is your body seeking to keep your temperature down with sweat.

I hike...a lot. I don't hike in the heat. It just isn't that enjoyable plus my dog hates it. I hike early and hope to be done by the time the temperature hits 80. There's no reason it would burn more calories than hiking any other time.

^ Concur. We've already had a handful of heat-related hiker rescues this year (our daytime highs are already in the 105F-110F range). Not a good idea, especially if you're not acclimated and adequately prepared.

Oh but the calorie burn! Missing out!

Thx for the suggestions. I’m leaving around 4AM tomorrow. It’s an hour drive so I’ll be there by 5. I’ll probably be on my way back by 8. And too bad about heat not burning more calories. That would have been cool.

Only extra weight you'll lose is water weight through sweat and you'll gain it back as soon as you drink some water.

I would say, be back in your car by 7:30am at the latest. Today, it is supposed to be 110 here, and the lowest will be 79. I am starting no later than 5am and have cut back my 3 hour hikes to 2 hours. (Sucks because to try new trails (and get a great calorie burn) I need that extra hour, but not worth being helicoptered off the mountain.)

Hike to a glacier and sit down in the snow.

It's snowing today at Camp Muir.
