Banana Sushi Rant

Has anyone else been seeing that "banana sushi" recipe vid floating about on MFP? My question is : why is it even here? It is a banana rolled in a tortilla smothered in peanut butter, sprinkled with coconut and sliced into bite size "sushi". The whole thing is close to 600 calories and the "serving size" (like anyone is going to eat half a rolled up tortilla and chuck the rest) is about the same calories as a regular mars bar.
i.e. 2 mars bars for the whole thing.
Also, what is this recipe supposed to be? A snack? A meal replacement? All I know is that eating that would use up a heck of a lot of my calories for the day.
I just feel that if a recipe has one of the "buzz" ingredients in it (a nut butter, avocado, even protein powders), then the message is "eat away...it's impossible to overdo them - they are good fats, they are satiating". But it really, REALLY isn't impossible to overdo it. In fact, it is super easy (And BTW: calling it "sushi" doesn't fool me either).
Similarly, seeing those Avocado Toasts recipes for under 300 calories posts. What serving size are they using? I get to the professed calorie per serving calculation at the bread stage + the first ingredient...and that's BEFORE a huge great avocado has been mashed on top, along with bacon and nuts and all sorts of other "so good for you they don't count" foods. An avocado itself is usually over 200 calories. They seem to stuff a lot of other ingredients in for the next 100. I don't think the pictures reflect the recipes.
It just gets on my nerves. By all means, if these foods are within your calorie count and you enjoy them and they work for you - then great. However, I feel a lot of these recipes are made to be "Instagram Ready" rather than actually being helpful. Good eating isn't always about acai and macca and chia seeds. Quite often it's about enjoying a bit of veg...y'know, boring veg like cabbage and broccoli and eating beans that are the colour of dishwater and taste really good, but just don't happen to get a lot of "likes" when you post them up, cos let's face it - beans and lentils look rubbish.
Anyway - that's my rant. Now, let me take cover before everyone tells me how nut butters and avocado changed their lives.

I'd prefer the tortilla and banana with chocolate spread then rolled in crushed peanuts8

All the stuff from MFP, whether it's their recipe ads or the blog, is just clickbait. You should look at it like any other advertisement you run across online all day.
I understand your point, there are too many people who think you can't overeat "healthy" foods, especially the trendy ones. But you also need to remember not everyone here is trying to lose weight, or eating the same calories you are. Some people are underweight and trying to gain, some are in maintenance, and some are very active fitness folks. For any of them, that calorie count may be fine. A tall man with a lot of weight to lose can eat a ton more food than a short woman looking to lose 20 lbs, and maybe a banana sushi snack will be an improvement over what he's currently doing. It's up to you, or them, to use common sense and the food database to figure out whether any food is appropriate or not :drinker:
I too get frustrated at food porn sometimes, it starts your brain thinking about lots of stuff you might not be able to fit into your day!9 -
It soubds amazing now you've described what's in it!6

This website has people who are trying to gain weight or those who need to fuel a long activity session. Heck, even someone who is dieting and really likes bananas and peanut butter may feel it's worth splitting one with another person, or even eating the whole thing if they have enough calories saved. Half a banana is an acceptable serving size for a dessert.
Thing about recipes is that you don't have to make them if they don't fit your goals. What grinds my gears more than the existence of any given recipe is if one is advocated as a low calorie one and then the serving size is barely a bite. You can cut a burger into quarters and call it a low cal burger. It annoys me because when I'm specifically looking for something lower in calories for a day where I don't have much to spare and get all these recipes with tiny servings.10 -
I have a problem with them calling that sushi.thats not sushi that’s a banana wrapped in a tortilla!! Lol14
-
why dress it up? I just put peanut butter on a spoon in one hand, hold a banana in the other, and then alternate bites. If I really want to fancy it up, I dip the peanut butter spoon in chocolate chips or coconut. I've also been known to sub cookie butter for peanut butter.
Assuming a medium sized banana and one tablespoon of PB, I'm 200 calories all in, plus the chips or coconut if I decide to use it. No prep needed.13 -

Love it.
I came across a site which was extolling the virtues of "egg wraps". The instructions were to whip up some eggs, pour them into a pan, put various toppings on top (e.g. cheese and spinach") and roll it up!!
I'm like: IT'S AN OMELETTE....GET OVER IT.

It’s like mashing a banana and freezing it and calling that ice cream. Ummm... no.10

I have not actually seen the recipe.
I like banana and peanut butter together and will smear a weighed portion of peanut butter on a banana occasionally for breakfast or a snack. I'd skip the other things because it is too much work and calories.2 -
I will confess that I tried it for lunch one day, just out of curiosity (no coconut because I didn't have any.) But I love peanut butter and banana sandwiches, so why not? Let me tell you, these people must get bananas with no significant curve in them, because mine was a mess. But it was a fun and tasty mess, so I count it a win!6

True - compared to what banana sushi could have been describing....doesn't bear thinking about really.0 -

Oh my god, I love you for this.
If my coworker tries to shove another half avocado down my throat while proclaiming that "it's a healthy fat!" then I'm gonna puke. I've counted my calories for the day. I don't have room for another 100+ calories and I don't want to just eat half a freaking avocado GROSS.
Also, in what universe would anything involving a tortilla be called sushi? We invented banana nutella crepes a long time ago; if you're gonna eat a dessert, just eat one of those.7 -

And crepes are lower in calories than a tortilla to boot.4 -

LMFAO!!!1 -
On second thought, I would support this ingredient combo on the condition that it was made like a quesadilla instead of like sushi. In other words, instead of rolling and slicing fold it over and toast in a skillet it with some butter before eating (and maybe some sugar, too).4

Hmm... that does sound good1 -
i love banana/peanut butter quesadilla-dip in honey instead of cheese, or melted chocolate2
-
Oh man, I love those. But there's no denying they're pretty high in calories. Using PB2 instead of peanut butter helps a lot. A sprinkle of cinnamon takes it up a notch too.0

I just bend the banana until it cracks a bit and becomes straight, then I proceed with the tortilla wrapping.2 -

This and the recent recipe for avocado brownies has me puzzled...0

Now I want a PB and B Quesadilla!0 -
I actually don't mind the banana sushi or avocado recipes. I can't have anything with gluten, dairy, or most processed carbohydrates like pasta and some of these I can actually eat, so it's kinda nice exploring quirky stuff like this since I can't pile ice cream with cookies and skittles.1

I did actually try this, but I still made a disaster of it. One thing the internet has taught me is that I am all thumbs when it comes to making food look pretty...except for icing a cake.1 -
To be honest I dont understand people whose response when someone offers something like a recipe for free is to get annoyed because they dont personally have a use for it. Well....then dont make it.
There isnt some sort of moral imperative to post only things that you personally find to be helpful. Yeah, there are things in the world you likely won't find a use for....why is that annoying though?
It would be like if I at my local coffee shop happened to see an ad posted on the bulletin board for guitar lessons and my response was to get annoyed because I dont even want guitar lessons. So annoyed that I decide to write a letter about how I dont find guitar lessons to be useful and post it right next to the original post. It's a weird rather narcissistic thing to do.15 -
Definitely not sushi... Not even close. I'd call it a banana roll up but use this instead to help with the calories.
1 FlatOut wrap - 90 cals
4 tbsp PB2 - 90 cals
1 banana - 120 cals
On top -
1 cup fresh strawberries - 50 cals
1 container greek yogurt - 80 cals
That's 420 calories with over 30g of protein which isn't that bad.

It's called banter mate.

I think they added Sushi to the title because when you cut it up into the same sized pieces, it kind of looks like Sushi on a tray.0

sounds yummy. Not everyone is here to lose weight.1
