What would you recommend to this girl? (its me a few years ago)

Does she need to keep losing weight, or just build muscle?
Is it normal to have calves that wide at that weight?
What shape is she? an apple?
Does she look healthy?
Body achieved after losing 15kg on weight watchers and doing cardio

If this was you a few years ago, why are you asking us to comment on her body?
You can lose weight while still trying to upkeep your muscles. Up your protein, use the weight machines.
Calves; Girl, I'm 103lbs now and my calves are almost as wide as that. Every body is different. My legs are my powerhouse.
Shape; I have no idea on the shapes. I get confused, too many overlaps and people looking alike to me.
Healthy; We can't really judge. It changes per person on what 'healthy' is. On me, upper range of 'healthy' and lower range of 'overweight' are killer on my frame. Is baaaadd.6 -
Impossible to suggest without some stats. Clothing choices and cameras can hide facts, and the only person who should suggest change based on appearance is owner of said appearance, in my opinion.11

lose weight until you are happy with yourself. I thought I was fat at a certain weight and now that is my goal to get back to that weight. It's up to you, as no one else's opinion should matter more than your own. How did you feel at that weight? What was your energy like?2
-
@alwaysbloated I'm no health expert but, in the picture you posted of yourself, it's my opinion you look neither "apple" shaped, "pear" shaped, nor any other fruit shape. Nor do your calves appear too wide in my opinion. I think your body shape appears fairly in proportion with your height.
Also just my opinion but I believe the best indicator of "healthy" is less about our body shape and more about how we FEEL most days. Do you frequently have sufficient energy to remain busy throughout your day, or are you constantly fatigued? Does your skin look clear or have a youthful glow? Is your hair silky or shiny? Are your nails healthy? Ultimately, we ourselves--together with our doctors--are the best judges of our own health.
As you progress in your weight loss goal, please be kind to yourself. Take care to eat enough healthy calories so you may have the energy you need to sustain and maintain your own recommended healthy weight and muscle tone.
May you--and I (after all, that's why I'm here too)--both also discover forgiveness and self-love, whether or not we ever reach our desired body image. Best wishes to you on your healthy journey.6 -
I think she looks happy and healthy2

You looked pretty good to me too. Happy and healthy I right.
You could probably lose a bit around your trunk.... If you wanted. You have a nice shape IMO. Slim arms and your legs look good. I'd like more defined calves like yours; my bones are fairly broad so my knees are often bigger than my calves, especially in one leg where I have some muscle paralysis... I'd take those calves any day.4 -

With those stats a healthy weight range should be 125-163 lbs. 187 lbs is still considered overweight. The weight you feel good and happy might not be the lowest weight.
I think the calves look pretty normal width.
I don't know what shape you were. I would not say apple as your weight seems more evenly distributed rather than a lot in the belly.
What does looking healthy mean to you? You did not look very athletic but did not look like you were about to keel over.
If you are above that weight then it is a goal to shoot for. Make a decision as you get closer as your body will not be exactly the same as it was years ago.
If you want a more muscular appearance than you will need to incorporate strength training into your plan. Don't wait until you get to that weight to start.

When I was starting out at the lower end of morbidly obese, all I was looking for was being able to be more active.
Once I managed that, I then decided to *try* and see if I could lose some weight.
Once i decided that my "traditional" subway Jared diet was not going to work long term, I went looking for a better solution and discovered MFP, the concept of losing weight at a reasonable deficit over time, and of eating and generally behaving (moving/exercising) approximately the same way I was planning to continue to do so long term.
Absent any hints as to what I would look at at various weights, and absent the ability to remember what my "good weight" was, my initial goal was "I'll aim for somewhere in the healthy weight range" and adjust once I'm there.
I've discovered that it takes quite a few months for my idea of what my body shape is like to percolate into my consciousness and even then it is a good idea for me to validate my perception with outside measurements.
And I've discovered that I am one of the majority that seems to track relatively accurately in terms of the correspondence between body fat and BMI.
The intersection between happiness and weight is different for each person.5 -
Was she happy? If she was then I'd tell her she looks great. If she wasn't then I'd ask her what she wanted to change. This is all about you.3

Agree! My immediate instinct when I saw the pic is that you look like a nice, fun person. I hope you see what's great about who you are!1 -
- She could keeping losing if she'd like, or stop and work on recomp (gaining muscle while maintaining weight).
- Absolutely. Those calves don't look abnormally wide at all.
- Human shaped. It does appear that she might carry her excess weight in her mid-section vs. her lower body, which would probably define her as "apple" but people aren't fruit.
- I can't judge "health" by appearance. But she's probably on the high end of "healthy" on the BMI scale, and/or body fat percentage.

Yeah, I was definately still overweight. I've spent my life being at the highend of the healthy range, and I mostly looked okay. What does looking healthy mean to you? You did not look very athletic but did not look like you were about to keel over.
Yeah, I've been cursed with unusually low muscle tone. Would be interesting to see how long it would take me to get to a good level. If you are above that weight then it is a goal to shoot for. Make a decision as you get closer as your body will not be exactly the same as it was years ago.
My torso has changed since having personal training, less rolls, more definition (while still being big bellied). If you want a more muscular appearance than you will need to incorporate strength training into your plan. Don't wait until you get to that weight to start.
I don't think I enjoy strength training unfortunately.
I don't enjoy flossing, but I do it anyway
What do you not like about strength training?- Have you had at least a few sessions with a personal trainer? Some people don't like it because they don't know what they are doing.
- I liked lifting less when I thought I was supposed to do low weights and high reps because "bulky". Turns out I like high weights/low reps better and am in no danger of getting bulky, lol.
- I see you have been working with a personal trainer so am wondering if they are doing typical chick weight lifting with you. If so, bring up The New Rules of Lifting for Women with them.
- I also liked lifting less when I tried to do cardio in the same session. Both suffered, esp lifting.
Don't be like my mom and not pick up strength training until you are in your 70s and have brittle bones4 -

Plus, after my workout sessions with a trainer, I used to binge.
Perfect. I'd recommend Strong Lifts 5x5. Five different simple (yet compound) lifts, 3 each day. You start with the bar so you get your form down. Add weight each time.

I wouldn't like that either. I like to simply pick up heavy things and put them down. Slowly. While listening to a kick-@ss heavy metal playlist and focusing on my breathing.2 -

you look to me like you are a potential athlete in the making.
yeah you are carrying more weight than ideal for performance, BUT, you are not that far away from where you could be, its a good starting place to see immediate progress in asthetics AND performance.
Become a triathlete ... take up running, swimming and cycling

Strength training can be many different things--research it. I think you could find something that you could manage to do, if you want to. As for your picture. I'm 63. I find it useless to moon over past photos of myself, because I can't go back there. I have changed and my life has changed. I try to be the best I can be where I'm at now. I look at myself and see what I've got to work with and try to make it better. Living in the past can make you crazy. Good luck and just be the best you can be.2
