Hey everyone,

I've been a member on here on and off for a very long time, but as I am about to embark on a big change, I thought I would log it somewhere to help people that might be considering the same.

I am 5 ft tall and weigh 211lb. My weight gain has been extremely gradual so over the years I have tried many things to lose the weight with very little results.

I have now made the decision to have a Gastric Band.
My first consultation will be on 30th June and I plan to keep everyone updated on here for each step.
Also, anyone that's already had a band? Would be great to hear from you.

I'm NOT looking for someone to talk me out of getting the band, I've already made my mind up and will be definitely going ahead with it, but I am open to any tell-all stories regardless of the negative parts

You can't just try things to lose weight, it doesn't work like that, no matter how many things you try. If you want to lose weight, you have to eat less, for real, consistently, and for a long time - forever if you want the weight to stay off. "The band" just forces you to do it.

Didn't you post about that here? https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10675423/gastric-band-discussion/p1

I wouldn't try to talk anyone out of weight loss procedures in general (I assume as an adult you know your own mind) but you may want to reconsider the band and swap out for another bariatric option, while some people have had good results from a band, it is going out of favour, lots of slippage, erosion, scar tissue and people are revisioning to sleeve, bypass or something else. Some clinics will not even insert the band anymore.

Perhaps visit a bariatric forum / board....where you will find people supportive of bariatric options in general, but have a look around about the issues regarding the gastric band.

If you are looking to blog your process you may want to use the MFP blog section, you will find it under 'my blog' which is under the 'my home' link on the left hand side of the screen (on my monitor anyway).

Looks like you got some good advice on the first thread you posted.

Also, please don't use a pink font. It's hard to read. B)

So, you want people to waste their time, then?

I did indeed make another post but unfortunately the responses I was receiving weren't quite answering what I asked.
As mentioned, I made my mind up over years of contemplation and research.
Bypass and Sleeve are NOT suitable for me, for many reasons. I'm simply looking for people who have gone through the procedure to get their insight, to tell me perhaps what the surgeon might not?

Have you considered a endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty? My sister is booked in for the procedure in Septemeber, she didn't want a surgical option and didn't want to have a band.

You will probably get the same answers here as you have already seen. Sometimes its bet to a specialised forum for specific information. I googled this one, looks pretty busy plus there are numerous facebook groups or pages. oops forgot to add it, https://www.bariatricpal.com/

I agree with the above. My opinion is the band is a temporary fix "a bandaid." Plus I don't believe in having a procedure that is not necessary due to ALL the complications that may occur. Good luck.

Has anyone here had the band and what do they think of it? any complications or problems you weren't expecting? Do you recommend it? What size were you before? How quickly did you lose the weight? What were the discomfort levels?

This is what you asked on the other thread and I think I did answer what you indeed asked.
This was my own personal experience not hearsay or I know someone, a friend of a friend, a family member but what I actually went through.
Sometimes people see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear and believe what they want to believe. So maybe you just want to hear and believe all the good things that come along with it like I did, I had tunnel vision and like you knew I wanted it and that's all that mattered.

It doesn't matter how many times in different places you ask the same question, changing words I really think you will have very similar answers.

It is your body, your life, your decision.
I wish you luck and I hope you have success with it and your future weightloss goals.

I'm not on here to get a glorified answer, or to be talked out of it. The people on the other thread were trying to talk me out of it and telling me I am going to start using drugs, getting depressed, become an alcoholic. I wasn't asking those questions, so figured perhaps I was asking in the wrong place.
I am capable of doing my own initial research, which I have done extensively for a few years but never actually reached out to people that have been through it.

I have done the researched, asked all the questions, learnt the risks, the alternatives, the aftercare and I am definitely going ahead with it. I just want to talk to people who aren't trying to talk me out of it and are willing to just give me the insight that the doctor can't. I don't want the pressurised negativity.

Edit: I had not read your message as I didnt realise it had gone onto a second page just reading it now.

Idk, half-arsed it? ;) Sorry, I'm not trying to ridicule you. But everybody loses weight in a calorie deficit. If you haven't lost weight, you haven't been in a calorie deficit for long enough. MFP calculates the amount of calories you need to eat to be in a deficit that is large enough to lose weight steadily at whatever weight you are, but not so large as to risk your health. That is the easy part. The hard part is to really stick to this calorie intake, day in, day out. It means being honest about what and how much you eat, it means being firm enough to say no to seconds, to food pushers, guts to find other outlets for emotions, smart strategies to avoid temptations, room for imperfection, it means understanding weight fluctuations and enough mental calm to not act on them, it means neither punishing or rewarding oneself with food, it means eating for pleasure, but not just because there's more left, it means eating enough, but not too much. It means assessing feedback and adjusting tactics, it means mindfulness and ignoring brain hickups. It means flexibility and being willing to consider other possibilites and challenging old beliefs. It means going out of your comfort zone, but also protecting your health and self. Depending on what you compare it with, managing weight and improving health is difficult, easy, boring, exciting, slow, fast, delightful, painful.

My only concern is, you are on a website that is specifically designed to allow calorie tracking and weight loss from it, and has a community developed to support people in that journey. There are plenty of forums that specifically support people who have made the choice to do something medical and not go the route in which MFP was designed, so why not just get with others on those sites where you would have a bigger group of like-minded individuals who specifically support your choices?

Of course you will get more comments against your decision, and tons of people to try and provide you steps and information based on exactly why this website exists.

HERE ARE SOME BETTER RESOURCES FOR YOU TO GARNER SUPPORT WITH LIKE-MINDED FOLKS.

So good luck in however you go on this - either going with actual support groups (there is ACTUALLY one called BariatricPal), or banging your head against the wall a bit here with stuff(where this is myFITNESSpal).

    All the best.

I'm sure your knowledge of me and my lifestyle is as limited as mine is of yours but what you perhaps skipped over, is that I have a number of medical issues which means that for the time it takes the average person to lose 1 stone, I could probably just about manage a pound. I have tried and failed at as many calorie deficit programs and diets as you could shake a stick at and I'm sure that if it was as easy as you make it sound to lose weight, it wouldn't even warrant the use of this website. Where, I'm absolutely certain that you don't mean to cause offence in any way, it was a big step for me to reach out to people on this site which is why I specifically asked what responses I am looking for.

As stated, I have already decided that I will be going ahead with the gastric band, regardless of how 'easy' or how 'half arsed' I am. I am an adult woman who has struggled with her weight for a large number of years along with dealing with unique health complications along with way so, the ridicule and 'dummies guide' you provide is appreciated but not exactly required here.

    Thanks anyway.

I'm really confused why you seem to think people here want to make you feel unwelcome and not giving you support and advice. But I have also offered support and advice to hundreds of people, and it's not always welcome. It hurts, but I have to accept it as it is.

I explicitly said I wasn't out to ridicule.

Do you really think that what I described, sounds easy? If so, why don't you just do it? I think it's challenging, as in, I work on those things every day, and it has allowed me to maintain my goal weight for three and a half years now. I couldn't have come so far without MFP, the food diary, and the wonderful community here, who teaches exactly what I am trying to pass on to you. I know it takes an open mind. I struggled with my weight until I was 43 years old. I don't know what made me think differently, but I suddenly did. I can't change your mind, but I can hope.

As mentioned you are on a website created for weight loss through calorie tracking and promotion of exercise, so the majority of people will continue to question medical interventions and promote using the website as designed. It isn't hell bent on making you feel unwelcome. I've seen a lot of great suggestions, and it doesn't seem judgy or such, but maybe because it doesn't fully support what you are looking into I can see how it might feel that way. That was really why I suggested using a forum that lines up better for what you want.
